Must watch: Mr. Met falls off stage during The Lumineers concert
Mr. Met should have stayed at the plate and not taken a walk. In one of the most unbelievably hilarious, as well as absurd, videos we've seen in quite some time, on Friday night, the beloved New York Mets mascot literally walked right off the stage during The Lumineers concert at Citi Field. "Rough night for Mr. Met at The Lumineers concert," @jessefinver captioned his tweeted-out video that now has over 1.5 million views. I'd say so, Jesse! For a Mets franchise that's been down on their luck for what seems like forever now, this may be their Curse of the Bambino moment. I'm not kidding. Not only did Mr. Met fail to catch a tambourine thrown at him by Lumineers lead singer Wesley Schultz, but to then keep walking as if everything's alright before falling off the stage into the crowd below? What?! The alternate angle is even more hilarious, as Mr. Met appears to be taken by Stranger Things' Upside Down dimension. "Anddd, he's gone." Seriously, take a moment and just envision the number of Mets fans that are waking up this morning after watching their team defeat the Kansas City Royals 8-3 on the road, thinking everything is fine. Only to realize that their mascot has now become the baseball version of Mark Sanchez's "butt fumble." "That's it! Watch the Mets go on an insanely historical collapse the rest of the season," X user 'Relaxed Sports Fan' wrote, who clearly is not relaxed and perfectly sums up the Mets hopeless fanbase of the last decade-plus. Another fan posted an old New York Post back cover from years ago that ironically had the headline: "Why does God hate the Mets?" over a photo of the mascot. "Was he wasted?" Brad on X asked. Hey, not a bad question. Although someone else mentioned that we now know why mascots and Disney characters always have a handler walking around with them - so things like this don't happen! You can't make it up! So far there's been no word about Mr. Met heading to the IL, but we'll keep you posted. Godspeed, Mets fans. Carlos Mendoza Praised by Mets Fans for Eruption Toward Umpire in Pirates Game
Carlos Mendoza Praised by Mets Fans for Eruption Toward Umpire in Pirates Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Mets looked like they regained their early-season form with their wins over the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday and Thursday, but they took another step back on Friday. Advertisement New York lost 9-1 to the last-place Pittsburgh Pirates, as southpaw pitcher David Peterson and reliever Blade Tidwell didn't have their finest outings. Peterson allowed five runs in 4.2 innings before Tidwell allowed four runs in 3.1 frames. The adversity continued on Saturday, as manager Carlos Mendoza pulled starting hurler Paul Blackburn after allowing three runs in one inning. Home plate umpire Roberto Martinez then ejected Mendoza in the fourth inning after he argued balls and strikes, vía SNY. New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza.© Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports The Mets were down 3-1 at the time of the ejection. Fans were on social media are on the manager's side of the conflict, as they feel that the umpire made the wrong calls. However, they also want the team to perform better. 'Can't wait for the ABS system next year,' one fan said. Advertisement 'Good for him. Maybe this team will wake up now. Show some [expletive],' another said. 'THIS TEAM BETER WAKE UP. Mendy had enough and that was really to protect his player,' another said. 'But the frustration is boiling over. Wake up Mets. And win this game for your manager.' 'The umpires are doing their best to promote robot umps,' another said. 'They absolutely and unequivocally [stink].' 'GOOD - this ump has been horrible all game with his strike zone!' another said. 'Will a day come well the umps even take 1% responsibility?' another asked. Heroes of someone else's story: Phillies 7, Mets 1
Those of you who have read my writing over the years will recognize that I have a few theories about 'how things seem to go' in baseball. One of those theories is that when a team is going poorly, and might be going through an extended losing streak, they'll often have one 'get right' game in which everything goes right for one night. For instance, a team on a seven-game losing streak might have a game in which they hit seven(!) home runs and win going away. But as often happens, they go back to struggling the very next night. Advertisement After the ugliness the Phillies endured on Saturday night, I reassured people that the game wasn't really about the Phillies. Sure, it would have been ideal if they hadn't given up all those home runs, but that was more about the Mets getting their act together for one night, and any opponent would have probably been similarly bludgeoned. Sure enough, the Mets responded by getting blown out by the Phillies 7-1 on Sunday night. The Phillies won the game, but really, the story of the game was that the Mets are in a bad way right now, and the Phillies were there to take advantage. That said, I don't want to diminish what the Phillies did on Sunday night. Just because your opponent is going through a massive team-wide slump, you still have to do your part. And it's especially nice because there is a sentiment among Phillies fans that the Mets have their number. (Obviously, the playoff loss goes a long way in pushing that narrative, but the Phillies had a winning series against the Mets in both the 2023 and 2024 regular seasons.) The Phillies certainly did their part, most prominently starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo, who dominated the Mets lineup. He pitched 6.2 shutout innings, allowing just three hits when walking only one. Advertisement Luzardo's ERA still remains over 4.00, but that is extremely deceptive. Aside from two disastrous starts, he's been excellent. Keeping in mind that even the biggest blowout only counts for one loss in the standings, I'll take that over a pitcher whose 4+ ERA comes from being just okay most starts. Luzardo was great from the very beginning, but it took the Phillies' offense a few innings to get going. Facing lefty starter David Peterson, the Phillies had just one hit in the first three innings. It looked like they were starting to rally in the third, but Edmundo Sosa helped stifle that threat by getting picked off second base. (Don't worry, he made up for it.) The shutout ended as many shutouts end: A Kyle Schwarber home run. That seemed to get the Phillies untracked. After Alec Bohm lined out, Nick Castellanos doubled, J.T. Realmuto walked, and Otto Kemp singled to make it 2-0. One batter later, Sosa made it 5-0. Advertisement The Phillies went quiet for a few innings but added a couple of insurance runs in the seventh, courtesy of a Bohm sacrifice fly, and an RBI double by Castellanos. The Mets avoided the shutout when Francisco Lindor hit a solo home run against Max Lazar in the eighth, but that accomplished little but making the score slightly less depressing for Mets fans. Thanks to the series victory, the Phillies now find themselves solely in first place of the National League East. After an off day on Monday, they'll take that status to Houston for a series against the Astros. Unlike the Mets, the Astros are not in free fall, so if the Phillies are to win that series, they'll likely have to do so on their own merits without any help. More from

Juan Soto drops truth bomb after Mets snap 7-game losing streak
The post Juan Soto drops truth bomb after Mets snap 7-game losing streak appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Mets finally got back into the win column on Saturday, stopping a rough skid. The Mets crushed the Philadelphia Phillies, 11-4. Mets slugger Juan Soto blasted two home runs, and generally loved what he saw from his team. Advertisement 'What happened in the past is already in the past. We just come on out to play good baseball and forget about what just happened,' Soto said afterward, per FOX Sports. Soto finished his night with four runs batted in to go with his two homers. He went 4-for-5 from the plate, showcasing his power. Soto had worked the count to 3-2 in both instances where he homered. This season, Soto has had ups and downs. He is currently hitting .256 with 16 homers on the season. New York is now 46-31 after defeating Philadelphia on Saturday. Five New York players hit home runs in their win on Saturday against the Phillies. Brandon Nimmo also had two homers like Soto, in what was an explosive display of offense. Advertisement The Mets had lost seven in a row before Saturday. New York was swept by Tampa Bay and Atlanta, and lost in their first game of the Phillies series. Mets hope that Juan Soto keeps it going on offense Soto signed a deal before this season that pays him mountains of money, so the Mets simply need him to perform. New York is looking to return to the NLCS this year, but also make a World Series. The Mets were doing quite well before their recent seven game skid. New York had a big lead in the National League East, although that's now gone. Heading into Sunday, New York and Philadelphia are tied at the top of the division standings for first. Advertisement Soto wasn't doing as well. He had just one hit in his three previous games, before Saturday. Soto hopes his epic performance against the Phillies ignites the team going ahead. 'We always are right there. We feel good, I feel good,' Soto added. 'For me, we just got to keep moving forward.' The Mets and Phillies are scheduled to play again on Sunday.
