Sean Lau on showbiz awards: 'Your success or failure today doesn't determine your tomorrow', Entertainment News
While veteran Hong Kong actor Sean Lau has won multiple best actor awards over his four decades in showbiz, he doesn't take these achievements for granted. The 61-year-old is set to grace Star Awards 2025 this Sunday (July 6) and spoke to AsiaOne recently ahead of the ceremony. He said: "Awards and nominations are forms of encouragement to and recognition of actors and the awards ceremony has a positive publicity effect for the entire industry, to let the audience pay more attention to the developments and trends in the industry. "Winning an award is definitely something to be happy about, but your success or failure today doesn't determine your tomorrow, so awards shouldn't be used to judge whether an actor is good or bad." Sean won three best actor awards this year for his performance in the critically acclaimed family drama film Papa (2024), where he plays a father who navigates survivor guilt and seek reconciliation with his mentally unstable son who killed the latter's mother and sister. He added to us that there are a few factors which determine a good actor. "Be respectful, strive to keep exploring and have the courage to try [different characters and acting styles]," he shared. Sean last attended Star Awards in 2000, where he presented the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes award with his wife, former actress Amy Kwok. When asked how he felt about attending the awards after more than two decades, he told us: "Time flies, but I am glad to see that Singapore has been able to retain its local characteristics while developing rapidly in many aspects." As for one local dish he must eat every time he visits, he said: "White pepper crab, because that is Mrs Lau's favourite." On July 6, Backstage Live will be presented from 3.30pm to 10.30pm, Walk of Fame from 5pm to 6.30pm, and the awards show from 7pm to 10pm and Post-Party from 10pm to 10.30pm. The Walk of Fame and awards show will air on Channel 8, Channel U, Mewatch and the Mediacorp Entertainment YouTube channel, Post-Party will air on Channel U, Mewatch and the Mediacorp Entertainment YouTube channel, while Backstage Live will air on the latter two platforms. 'This is torture': Elvin Ng details gruelling experience with prosthetic makeup for new drama, Entertainment News
Before the cameras rolled on the set of new drama The Spirit Hunter, local actor Elvin Ng would usually be found in a chair having his makeup done. On top of a wig, heavy eyeliner and coloured contacts lenses, at times the 44-year-old would also have dried glue stuck to his skin. Elvin's first villain role Ah Lin Ta is an all-powerful monk who stays young by transforming during solar eclipses, and he told AsiaOne in a recent interview that his character could even be an 80-year-old man who looks young. He added: "(To appear old) I had to puff up my face and put glue, a lot of glue, and cool it so it becomes wrinkled, then I have to do it again." The makeup team applied multiple layers of glue to enhance the wrinkles and this was done eight to 10 times. In The Spirit Hunter, Hong Ling plays protagonist Tian Nana, a 20-year-old girl burdened to carry a toy sword infused with the spirit of Jian Ling (Richie Koh), which curses her to see supernatural entities, like Ah Lin Ta, that she must defeat. For his first shoot with prosthetic makeup, the application process took two to three hours and he had to arrive on set earlier than most of his co-stars. "I was like, 'This is torture'," he recalled. "We were doing overnight filming, and the weather forecast said there would be a thunderstorm throughout. I arrived at 3pm to do makeup for three hours, and I felt like I wasn't going to be able to film anything," he added. Elvin's situation continued to worsen. "When I went on set and it was raining, I ate noodles and because of the glue, I couldn't move my mouth very big," he said. "So I was in quite low morale because of the makeup." Luckily, the rain stopped and Elvin managed to film some scenes. "At least I didn't spend three hours doing makeup and then shoot nothing, that would be very demoralising," he said. [[nid:719451]] He also noticed the heavy makeup and glue affected his skin. He shared: "There were also fighting scenes and a lot of sweat. So the glue would come off and (the makeup team) would have to add more glue with all the sweat. When I went back home that day from the first day of filming, there were six big pimples on my forehead. "I never really had this problem before. Then I was like, 'Along the way how?' But then after that, my skin sort of got used to that glue." Still, Elvin shared he always looked forward to removing the prosthetic makeup. Once it was confirmed he would have no more scenes to film that day, he would immediately peel it off. "It was both a bit painful and pleasurable at the same time, a bit sadistic like this character." Despite his dislike for the application process, the look played a huge part in one of his most memorable scenes. "While I'm recuperating and getting young, I get attacked by Tyler Ten's character. So I'm super angry because I'm also vain. Like, 'What the heck, now I look like that. I'm going to kill you.'" The Spirit Hunter, also starring Ferlyn Wong, is available on demand for free on Mewatch and on Channel 8 on weekdays at 9pm. Ferlyn Wong had emergency eye surgery after incident on set of new drama, Entertainment News
Local actress Ferlyn Wong had a health scare when she woke up one morning in early December last year and couldn't open her eyes. Visiting the hospital a second time for the same ailment, she had expected the doctor to give her stronger medicine. Instead, she was shocked to hear that she needed emergency surgery immediately. While promoting her new drama The Spirit Hunter, the 33-year-old told AsiaOne in a recent interview that around two and a half weeks earlier, she was filming in a "rough and sandy" environment. Despite this, Ferlyn was determined to do most of her character Hua Cheng Feng's fights and stunts herself. "We were actually attached to a stunt double for every single scene," she said. "But I set a very high expectation for myself and I wanted to do most of the scenes." She added she performed 80 per cent of her scenes herself. The production team used strong wind effects, sending sand into the air and into the puddles left behind by the morning's rain. After filming the scene, Ferlyn fell into a puddle of muddy water, where a lot of sand went into her eyes. "The next day I felt something was off with my eye," she shared. "I thought in just one or two days, it would be fine, you know?" As the day went by, Ferlyn felt "weirder" so she saw a doctor and was prescribed medicine. However, her condition worsened and she ended up battling a severe eye infection that required surgery. She told us that her manager and parents were overseas at that time, and so she had to leave the hospital by herself. Although filming was delayed for four days because of her condition, the production staff put the actors' safety and health first, she said. Ferlyn has since recovered with no impact to her vision, but shared that she developed a double eyelid on her right eye after the surgery. In The Spirit Hunter, she plays Hua Cheng Feng, a swordswoman with a life purpose — to give back to her god-uncle after he saved her life. Hong Ling plays protagonist Tian Nana, a 20-year-old girl burdened to carry a toy sword infused with the spirit of Jian Ling (Richie Koh), which curses her to see supernatural entities that she must defeat. Ferlyn shared that the script was inspired by the concept of yin and yang, where there's darkness within the light and light within the darkness. "Who says good won't do evil? Who says bad won't do good?" she said. "People would think that Hua Cheng Feng is evil, but there's always a reason to why she's doing what she's doing." The Spirit Hunter, which also stars Tyler Ten, will be available on demand for free on Mewatch from June 30 and premieres on July 3, airing on weekdays at 9pm on Channel 8.
