Want to save money on dining out? Get ready for Miami Spice deals

In a year during which every diner seems to be searching for a bargain, Miami Spice 2025 is almost here. The annual promotion by the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau starts Aug. 1 and runs through the end of September, with more than 300 restaurants around Miami-Dade County offering fixed price, three course brunch, lunch and dinner menus. Brunch and lunch cost $35, while dinners are $45 or $60, depending on where you go. And where you go, as always, ranges across an array of cuisine and different price points, from local favorites like MiMo's Blue Collar; Chef Raheem Seeley's Asian smokehouse Shiso; or Kendall's barbecue haven Smoke & Dough to upscale imports like Philadelphia chef Michael Solomonov's Aviv; Sparrow Italia from London; and Japanese hotspot Uchi from Texas. Michelin-starred restaurants are participating, too. Cote Korean steakhouse in the Design District does a robust business each year with its fixed price lunch, while Stubborn Seed in Miami Beach and Le Jardinier in the Design District are also offering dinner specials. Even the brand-new Daniel's steakhouse, which opens Wednesday in the former space of Fiola, is ready to offer brunch, lunch and dinner menus. The high participation arrives at a time when many local restaurants are struggling through a tough summer. Promotions like Miami Spice and Taste the Gables, which runs through the end of July, are a way to lure customers during what is becoming an ever-longer low season. Chef Niven Patel, whose restaurants Erba, Paya and Ghee Indian Kitchen are all participating in Miami Spice, said the promotion is a good way for customers to discover new favorites. 'It brings more diners into our dining room, which is great,' he told the Miami Herald. 'It helps get new customers into our door. It brings a wider audience for sure, and we hope they fall in love with us.' Some restaurants will be offering special 'signature' dining experiences beyond the fixed price menus, like Faena Miami Beach, which is offering the Faena Theater Experience, a three-course meal and a third-row orchestra ticket to a performance for $150. L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon, Miami's only two-star Michelin restaurant, is offering a five-course dining experience of starting with foie gras royale and parmesan foam and including kampachi crudo and lobster vinaigrette; a summer squash mille feuille; heritage chicken stuffed with black truffle; and strawberry key lime cremeux for dessert. The dinner is $135. For a full list of Miami Spice participants, visit

Nine ways Miami reinvented itself from the 1950s to 2025

South Florida Nine ways Miami reinvented itself from the 1950s to 2025 Miami has changed in many ways since the 1950s. Iconic spots like the Fontainebleau hotel have evolved, with new towers and event spaces added over time, while still preserving famous MiMo designs. Neighborhoods such as Little Havana transformed as new communities moved in. Popular districts like Mid-Beach and the 79th Street corridor shifted from old-fashioned stores and theaters to modern boutiques and business centers. Even legendary nightlife locations and historic landmarks, from the Latin Quarter club to the Lincoln Theatre, have been reinvented or replaced, reflecting South Florida's ongoing transformation. Take a look at the photos. The Fontainebleau Hotel rises at the former Firestone Estate, Miami Beach. In 1954 photo, the old Harvey Firestone home is still standing in the shadow of the new $14 million building. Get out! Memorial Day Weekend outdoor events for families, fans of free stuff, Led Zeppelin and apple pie

Memorial Day Weekend is considered by many to be the unofficial start of summer, which is just a reminder that we're not, technically, there yet. So this long holiday weekend may be the final opportunity to get outside when the temps are not, technically, at their peak. Here are a few ways to have fun outdoors this weekend in South Florida. The sand around the Lake Worth Beach Pier (more formally, the William O. Lockhart Municipal Pier) has always been a popular place to fish, surf or put down a blanket to chill by the water, with plenty of local dining and shopping options. Sitting at the foot of the pier, seafood restaurant Benny's on the Beach has been a local landmark for nearly 40 years — which is being celebrated with a new house beer. A collaboration with Copperpoint Brewing in Boynton Beach, the blonde ale called Benny's on the Beach will make its debut this weekend, with Copperpoint reps visiting the pier to offer free samples on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. You'll also find the beer at Benny's during a $5 can special all weekend. Benny's on the Beach is at 10 S. Ocean Blvd., Lake Worth Beach. Visit A summer staple in downtown Delray Beach, the free Sunset Concert Series returns to Old School Square on Friday evening with Bon Jovi tribute band Livin' on a Bad Name. Gates open at 5 p.m., local Beatles tribute Strawberry Lane performs at 6 p.m. and the headliners go on at 7:30 p.m. This is a BYO-chair event, and there will be food and drink vendors at the venue (no coolers or outside alcohol allowed). Admission is free, but space is limited. VIP tickets are available for $50 and include a seat, access to a private lounge area with a dedicated bar, and one complimentary beer or wine. Other acts on the schedule include The Best of Rod Stewart (June 27), Fleetwood Mac tribute True Rumors (July 25) and Billy Joel tribute Turnstiles (Aug. 22). Old School Square is at 51 N. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach. Visit There is not a more attractive outdoor concert venue in South Florida than the Miami Beach Bandshell, a nearly 70-year-old waterfront MiMo jewel included in the National Register of Historic Places. The 1,300-capacity venue was made even more appealing a few years ago with the addition of a thoughtfully designed canopy — a practical weather shield, but in itself a piece of art featuring a circular canvas 70-feet across on a single column over the original terrazzo dance floor. On Friday, the bandshell will welcome nationally touring Led Zeppelin tribute band Zoso at 7 p.m., with tickets starting at $39.56. On Saturday at 7 p.m. the bandshell will host the fifth annual Miamibloco Saideira Social, a samba party with Miami percussion group Miamibloco joined by Bateria Saideira, an 80-piece percussion orchestra, and an army of local musicians. Tickets cost $47. The venue has a variety of food and drink options for purchase on-site. The Miami Beach Bandshell is at 7275 Collins Ave. Visit The Great American Beach Party is a family-oriented Memorial Day Weekend tradition at Fort Lauderdale's Las Olas Oceanside Park on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. You'll find giant inflatable water slides, classic car displays, a sand-sculpting contest, live music, parachute jumps by the SOCOM Para-Commandos and, of course, plenty of ocean to jump into. Admission is free. Visit A typical weekend in downtown Delray Beach offers plenty to catch your eye, but this weekend they dial it up a few notches. The Memorial Day Weekend edition of the Downtown Delray Beach Craft Festival will take place along Northeast Fourth Avenue, just south of East Atlantic Avenue, displaying the work of more than 100 juried artists and crafters from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free. Visit Boca Raton is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a series of events, including the Centennial Celebration Weekend Drone Show on Sunday at the Boca Raton Innovation Campus (BRiC). Gates open at 7:30 p.m. (seating is limited), and the first drone display will be at 8:30 p.m. The performance will run about 12 minutes and be followed by a DJ performance in advance of a repeat of the same drone show at 9:30 p.m. Admission is free, and guests are welcome to stay for both shows. The evening will end with a fireworks display. Snacks will be available for purchase. BRiC, a science and technology office park, is at 5000 T-Rex Ave. Visit The 40th annual Memorial Day Apple Pie 5K and Whit's Ice Cream Mile will take place at the Spanish River athletic fields in Countess de Hoernle Park in Boca Raton on Monday. The 5K begins at 7 a.m., the mile run at 8 a.m., and, yes, there will be pie and ice cream at the end. Registration (in advance or on-site) costs $40 for the 5K and $20 for participants age 16 and younger. The Whit's Ice Cream Mile costs $20. It's free for veterans to participate in both runs. A free kids race for age 8 and younger also will take place at 8 a.m. Proceeds benefit Folds Of Honor, which provides educational scholarships to spouses and children of fallen or disabled military and first responders. The park is at 1000 Spanish River Blvd., Boca Raton. Visit Staff writer Ben Crandell can be reached at bcrandell@ Follow on Instagram @BenCrandell and X @BenCrandell.

Xiaomi founder touts new Chinese chip to rival Apple silicon

Xiaomi Corp.'s billionaire founder outlined plans Thursday to outfit its top-end devices with advanced homegrown mobile processors , showcasing the company's ambitions to expand its tech portfolio and compete with American heavyweights. Lei Jun , who shot to fame with bold plans to unseat Apple Inc. in China, gave online viewers a sneak peek at its Xring O1 chip , which he said would power three devices including the Xiaomi Tablet 7 Ultra , another product launched at the same event, livestreamed from Beijing. At 3nm, that processor is aimed at matching Apple and Qualcomm Inc. chips. 'We also want to become one of the top chipmakers, with our phones targeting iPhones, can our chips also be compared against those of Apple's?' he said. Lei admitted the Xring lags Apple's own chipset in some respects such as processor speed—but stressed it was an achievement for their fledgling design team. The entrepreneur, who often personally hosts product launches, is expected to trot out Xiaomi's first electric sport utility vehicle—the YU7—at the same event. Xiaomi is keen to push deeper into tech arenas beyond the affordable smartphones and appliances it's best known for. Lei announced plans at the Thursday event to invest 200 billion yuan ($27.8 billion) in research and development over the next five years. It wants to move past a fatal March accident involving one of its signature SU7 sedans that sent orders plunging the following month. Xiaomi had raised its 2025 delivery target for electric vehicles to 350,000 units days before that incident, which prompted scrutiny over Xiaomi's self-driving advertising claims. It stoked concerns that the YU7 would be delayed. Lei's most important project is EVs — a $10 billion attempt to take on Tesla Inc. and BYD Co. that the founder has called his final endeavour as an entrepreneur. The market for SUV was more intense than that for sedans, Lei wrote in a social media post, but he believed that the YU7 has its own unique qualities. It won't officially hit the market until at least July, with no pricing released at the Thursday event. Xiaomi won't take pre-orders for the vehicle yet, Lei wrote in a separate post. The company has also announced a $7 billion investment to develop and enhance its own mobile processor over the next decade. Xiaomi's goals mirror Huawei Technologies Co.'s breakthrough a few years ago, which spooked Washington and raised concerns about Chinese advances in strategic technologies such as AI and chips. Among the hard-tech initiatives it's touted since the March incident was an in-house large language model dubbed the MiMo. Executives have reportedly talked about investing in AI in the past, though MiMo is the first real product to emerge. Its foray marks the second big project in as many years for a company best-known for making affordable smartphones and appliances from robot vacuums to rice cookers.
