Both adults and children run away from the aircraft as rescue crews appear in the background. The Boeing 777-300 departed Istanbul and made a 'normal landing' at Antalya Airport on July 29. However, ground crews saw something out of the ordinary emerging from the landing gear. 'Smoke was observed emanating from the landing gear during taxiing, which was noticed by the air traffic controller and reported to the pilot,' Enes Çakmak, a leader of Turkey's General Directorate of State Airports Authority, said in a translated post on X. He added: 'Subsequently, swift coordination was established between the control tower and ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting) units, and our teams promptly arrived at the scene.' All 247 passengers and 13 crew members evacuated. No injuries were reported. A video shared by Çakmak on X shows firefighters on the tarmac spraying water on the landing gear. Two photos capture the plane with its emergency exit slides deployed. Another clip shows the plane safely towed after inspection. 'I extend my gratitude to all my colleagues, particularly our air traffic control and ARFF teams, who acted promptly and effectively with their professional reflexes,' Çakmak said in his post. 'I hope such an incident does not occur again.' Yahya Üstün, Turkish Airlines' senior vice president of communications, said a 'technical malfunction' caused the incident. 'Technical inspections of the aircraft have been initiated by our authorized teams,' he wrote on X. 'Initial findings indicate that the smoke was caused by a technical malfunction in the hydraulic pipe.' A passenger onboard an American Airlines flight that was evacuated on the runway of Denver International Airport has detailed the terrifying ordeal. Mark Tsurkis was onboard the Miami-bound Boeing 737 MAX 8 alongside 172 other passengers on Saturday when travellers and crew were forced to flee the plane moments before take-off. Tsurkis filmed the entire incident, showing passengers coming down the slide in a panic clinging onto luggage and children. Smoke was seen billowing from the back of the aircraft. Tsurkis said the plane had been speeding up for about 30 seconds in preparation for take-off when there was a 'loud boom' from under the aircraft. 'We knew something was wrong because there was a pretty big bang and then and soon as it happened the captain of the plane, the pilot, starts … slowing the plane down and then when he was slowing the plane down, when the plane was still moving, one of the passengers screamed 'look the tyre',' he told Sunrise. 'We knew we weren't flying anywhere, we knew something serious happened and then we started smelling the smoke a little bit. Somebody screamed fire.' It appeared as though one of the tyres had blown up, Tsurkis said, and passengers were quickly told to evacuate. Being in the front row, Tsurkis was one of the first people to get off the plane. Passengers were told to leave their luggage behind as is common protocol during a plane evacuation, however multiple passengers were seen in Tsurkis' video carrying small suitcases down the slide. Tsurkis said he couldn't believe so many people had disobeyed the instructions. 'First thing they (the crew) told all the passengers, they said 'leave your luggage … do not touch it just go, just vacate the plane' and despite the clear message from the crew, some of the passengers decided that material things were more important to them than human life,' he said. 'When I got out of the plane I grabbed my phone I started recording and then you start seeing people coming out with the luggage, with bags … it was crazy.' The combination of blown tires and the deceleration of the plane during braking resulted in a brake fire that was extinguished by the Denver Fire Department, according to American Airlines. 'All customers and crew deplaned safely, and the aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team. We thank our team members for their professionalism and apologise to our customers for their experience,' the airline said. Five people were evaluated at the scene, and another person was evaluated at a gate and taken to the hospital with a minor injury, according to the airport and airline. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident. The evacuation is the latest in a string of alarming aviation incidents at Denver International Airport – the sixth-busiest airport in the world. In March, dozens of passengers were forced to stand on the wing of an American Airlines plane as they evacuated the aircraft after one of its engines caught fire. 'American Airlines Flight 3023 reported a possible landing gear incident during departure from Denver International Airport around 2:45 p.m. local time Saturday, July 26,' the agency said. American Airlines confirmed a mechanical issue with one of the tyres during takeoff. The aircraft has been removed from service and will be inspected by maintenance crews. 'All customers and crew deplaned safely,' the airline said in a statement. 'We thank our team members for their professionalism and apologise to our customers for their experience.' Boeing fleet under radar On June 12, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, killing all but one passenger on board. The incident reignited global safety concerns around Boeing aircraft and prompted an investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). However, in its prelimnary report, the AAIB indicated that the fuel control switches on the flight had transitioned from 'run' to 'cutoff' seconds after take-off. On July 22, Air India announced that it has completed precautionary inspections on the locking mechanism of the Fuel Control Switch (FCS) on all Boeing 787 and 737 aircraft in its fleet. The airline said it found no issues with the locking mechanism.

The FAA said it would further probe the fire incident. Denver Airport, in a separate statement, said the incident occurred when the plane was already on the runway; the airport's First Responders and Denver Fire Department were alerted, and the passengers were evacuated. "Five people were evaluated on scene and not transported. One person was evaluated at a gate and was transported," they added. The Denver Fire Department announced around 5:10 pm that the fire had been extinguished. The aircraft "experienced a maintenance issue" with a tire on the landing gear, said American Airlines in a statement, adding, "All customers and crew deplaned safely, and the aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team." Meanwhile, one of the passengers evacuated from the plane is facing criticism for prioritising his luggage over his child during such a potentially life-threatening situation. He was seen in the video sliding down the aircraft, holding his child in one hand, apparently by his neck, and luggage in the other. He appeared to fall over his child, failing to balance himself after stepping out of the slide. This is the second time in five months that Denver reported a fire incident involving an aircraft. In March, a Dallas-bound American Airlines plane - a Boeing 737-800 - caught fire at the airport. All 172 customers and six crew members were evacuated.
