Family of man killed while riding bike near Miami Shores wants answers
The family of a man who was struck and killed while riding his bike near Miami Shores earlier this week is hoping the public can help in finding the driver responsible. Samuel Lee Singletary, 67, was pedaling along NW 7 Avenue on Tuesday night around 9 p.m. when he was struck by a car near NW 92 Street. The driver who hit him drove off without rendering aid or calling 911, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office. They said the only vehicle description they have is that it was a dark four-door sedan. On Friday, members of Singletary's family and Miami-Dade deputies walked the street in the area where he was hit, handing out flyers and speaking with the people they met. Sheriff's investigators say they have surveillance video of the crash and are waiting to see if the driver will bring the car to any nearby body shops. The family, however, wants closure and urged the driver to turn themselves in. Singletary's sister, Dorothy Isler, said she got the devastating call hours after he died. "It was like one o 'clock on Wednesday morning. I was so hurt and shocked," she said Isler said she'll miss her brother's quiet demeanor and positive outlook on life. "That's my brother next to me," she said, pointing to a picture of her family. "There were six of us and that was the only brother that was left. My oldest brother." Isler hopes someone saw something, or knows something, about the deadly crash that can help lead to an arrest. Anyone with information is urged to come forward and contact the sheriff's office.

Oklahoma doctor arrested after her 4-year-old daughter was found dead in a Florida pool
A pediatrician from the Oklahoma City metro area was arrested in connection with the recent death of her 4-year-old daughter in Florida. Detectives with the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office traveled to the Oklahoma City area and, with the assistance of the United States Marshals Service and the Oklahoma City Police Department, arrested Dr. Neha Gupta, 36, on a first-degree murder complaint. Investigators allege that Gupta killed her daughter, Aria Talathi, who was found floating unresponsive in a backyard pool early Friday, June 27, at a residence in the El Portal village of Miami, Florida. "The arrest of Neha Gupta by the U.S. Marshals in Western Oklahoma working a collateral lead is a prime example of good communication and teamwork by dedicated officers," Johnny Kuhlman, U.S. marshal for the Western District of Oklahoma, said in a statement. "Ms. Gupta is facing a serious criminal charge and getting her into custody to face that charge was a priority for law enforcement." More: Logan County plane crash victim identified, investigation underway According to a news release from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, Gupta and her daughter had traveled from Oklahoma City and were staying at a short-term rental. Officers with the Village of El Portal Police Department responded to a 911 call about 4:30 a.m. July 27 reporting a child drowning in the residential pool. Paramedics took the unresponsive child to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where Aria Talathi was pronounced dead, according to another news release from the U.S. Marshals Service. On Monday, June 30, a warrant for Gupta was issued out of Miami-Dade County, and law enforcement arrested her without incident about 2:45 p.m. at a residence in the 200 block of NW 152nd Street in Edmond, the U.S. marshals wrote. "This individual is accused of committing a horrendous act and her swift arrest illustrates the professionalism, communication, and teamwork of all agencies involved," Gadyaces Serralta, U.S. marshal for the Southern District of Florida, said in a statement Wednesday, July 2. "I extend my sincere gratitude to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, Oklahoma City Police Department, and the Oklahoma City Metro Fugitive Task Force." Gupta worked as a licensed doctor specializing in pediatric care at Oklahoma Children's Hospital OU Health in Oklahoma City. Her legal counsel is arguing that authorities have been too quick to label her a suspect in her daughter's death. "It's disheartening to learn the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office is rushing to judgment without all the investigatory tools having come to fruition,' Richard Cooper, an attorney representing Gupta, told KOCO-TV in an interview July 2. "Someone who has experienced the unimaginable is now sitting in jail and is now being labeled as a murderer and is sitting in jail when she should be burying her child." Gupta is pending extradition to Miami-Dade County, where she is expected to be formally charged with first-degree murder. "Because we think it's a rush to judgment, we look forward to all the facts coming out, and all the evidence, and then we'll see what happens," Cooper added. Speed cameras now active in 11 Miami-Dade school zones; drivers face $100 fines
Drivers in Miami-Dade County are being warned to slow down in school zones or risk getting a $100 ticket. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office has activated RedSpeed camera systems in 11 school zones across the county to catch speeding drivers and improve safety for children attending summer school and camps. Where the cameras are active The cameras are now operating at the following school zones: • Goulds Elementary School • Hammocks Middle School • Madie Ives K-8 Center • Redland Middle School • Devon Aire K-8 Center • Highland Oaks Middle School • E.W.F. Stirrup Elementary School • Ruben Dario Middle School • American Senior High School • Charles R. Drew K-8 Center • Robert Russa Moton Elementary School Drivers going more than 10 mph over the speed limit will receive a $100 citation in the mail. Community and law enforcement reactions "I 100 percent agree with that because speed around the school can be dangerous for kids," said Cira Perez, whose daughter just completed first grade at E.W.F. Stirrup Elementary School. "During summer, during school time, it's a good idea for everybody to be aware that there's a school there." Deputy Joseph Peguero, public information officer for the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, emphasized that the initiative is about protecting children. "There will be a $100 fine sent to the registered owner of the vehicle, so if you loan your vehicle to a family member or friend, you as a registered owner will be receiving the citation," Peguero said. "Speed kills, and 11 miles over the posted speed limit is considered speeding, and it really hits home when it affects your own family," he added. How the system works The cameras are active every school day, beginning 30 minutes before school starts and ending 30 minutes after dismissal. The program began last November, and the county's long-term goal is to install the RedSpeed system in 206 school zones throughout unincorporated Miami-Dade. Cameras will remain active through July 25, then pause until the new school year begins in mid-August. If cited, drivers must either pay the fine within 30 days or request a court hearing within the same time period to contest the violation.

MDSO releases name of man fatally shot by deputy after chase
The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office has released the name of the man who was fatally shot by a deputy Tuesday after a brief chase. Just after 5 p.m., when deputies with the Robbery Intervention Detail attempted to stop a yellow Corvette near NW 66th Street and NW 22nd Avenue due to illegal window tint, the driver, identified as 24-year-old Kristofer Laboy, sped off, according to the sheriff's office. Brief chase and deadly shooting "The vehicle fled the scene, and with the assistance of the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office aviation unit, deputies tracked the Corvette to a dead end near NW 85 Street and NW 4 Court," Sheriff's spokesman Argemis Colome said. Laboy, who was the only one in the car, then got out. Investigators said he was armed as he approached the deputies' vehicles and that's when Deputy Kelvin Cox shot him. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived and declared him dead at the scene. No deputies were injured during the incident and a Laboy's gun was recovered. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now leading the investigation, which is standard protocol in police shootings. Cox is a 23–year veteran of law enforcement.
