New York tourist found murdered in Miami parking garage remembered by family, friends at funeral service
A 35-year-old woman from New York City who was found murdered in a parking garage in Miami two weekends ago was honored on Sunday at a funeral service in Hialeah. Friends of Chastidy Charlotte Rodriguez gathered at the Mother of Our Redeemer Catholic Parish to remember her. City of Miami Police said that she and 31-year-old Darious Coon from Detroit, whom she had met in Miami, were discovered at 10 a.m. in a car that was on the 10th floor of a parking garage by an apartment building at Northeast 2nd Avenue and 4th Street, just west of Biscayne Boulevard and Bayfront Park. Police said they had been shot and killed, and said it appeared that this did not involve a robbery since both of them still had their belongings with them. Miami Police spokesman Ofc. Mike Vega told CBS News Miami that the crimes could have been committed anywhere between July 16 and 19. He also said they are reviewing surveillance tape between those dates and are appealing for anyone who heard or saw anything suspicious to come forward and call Miami Police or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477). "I am praying that God will accept my friend to heaven," said Rodriguez's friend Franchesca Martinez. "I remember her as a good friend. She was a great person. She was a great mother. She was a great daughter." She hopes the Miami Police investigation will pay off and lead to whoever committed the crimes. "We need to resolve this issue," Martinez said. "I want whoever did this, I want them in jail, at least." Rodriguez's brother told CBS News Miami that his sister had lived in New York City for more than 10 years and loved to visit Miami. He said she was thinking of leaving New York City in the next few years, and Miami would have been one of her top choices as her next destination. He said that her body will be sent to the Dominican Republic in the next few days, and that's where family members will hold their funeral service for her. "She was a good person and a good person and everyone around her knew she had a good heart. I don't want this to be just another case. We want justice," he told CBS News Miami on Friday. "We also need to know the motive because it is not fair that someone you love, who did not deserve this, had to go out so early. I hope detectives can find the person or the people who did this."

Beautiful woman who just moved to Miami to start new life is found dead inside car
A woman who had just started her new life in Miami was tragically found dead inside a car at a high-rise parking garage after going on a date with a new man. Chastity Charlotte Rodriguez, 35, had recently moved from New York City, when her body was found alongside Darius Coon, who had also relocated to Miami. The grisly discovery was made Saturday morning on the 10th floor of a garage near Northeast 4th Street and Northeast 2nd Avenue, after someone alerted authorities to a foul odor coming from the vicinity. Police believe the two were on a date the night they were killed. 'We received a call from someone telling us that they're sensing a foul odor,' Miami Police spokesman Michael Vega said. 'We now have three to four days of surveillance video to go through - hour by hour.' Both victims had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and police say the case does not appear to be a robbery or murder-suicide. Cops are treating it as a homicide. Rodriguez had been in town for just a week, working a short stint at a local strip club, according to a close friend who said she last spoke to her around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday. After several unanswered calls, the friend said she tried to file a missing persons report. 'At this moment, I cannot tell you how I feel because it's new for me,' the friend told NBC Miami. 'I can't believe this. I can't believe this happened right now to me.' She added that Rodriguez had met Coon at a nightlife venue just days before the killings. 'That was the last time we saw a photo of him - sitting at a restaurant table,' Tashia Porter, Coon's mother, told local ABC affiliate WXYZ of the couple's date. Coon had recently returned to Miami after visiting family and his two children in Detroit. When communication suddenly stopped, his relatives grew concerned. 'I talk to my son three, four times a day, so when he didn't call, I knew something was wrong,' Porter said. The family filed a missing persons report - and their worst fears were confirmed when police identified Coon's body on Sunday. 'To lose a child, it's nothing I would wish on anyone,' Porter said. Rodriguez had also been reported missing by friends in New York. Her brother described her as 'a good mom to my nephew' and remembered her as a fun-loving sister, daughter, and cousin. 'Our detectives are working the case,' Officer Vega said. 'They're trying to obtain surveillance from several locations around the area and piece together what exactly happened.' Police are urging anyone who was at the garage between July 16 and 19 to come forward. Coon's relatives expressed their condolences to Rodriguez's loved ones. Coon, remembered as a football coach, fitness lover, and devoted father, leaves behind two children - now struggling to grasp his loss. 'My granddaughter, she's 7. She doesn't understand it. She just knows Daddy isn't picking up the phone,' Porter said. 'His son, he's devastated. He hasn't been eating. He's a football player, and he didn't even want to go to practice because he's used to seeing his dad there.' Darius Coon will be laid to rest in Detroit on his birthday, August 7. Homicide detectives are continuing to investigate.

Victim's brother appeals for help after 2 tourists found shot in Miami parking garage
A grieving brother is calling for justice after two tourists were found shot to death inside a parked car in a downtown Miami garage, as police urge the public to come forward with information. The victims, identified as 35-year-old Chastidy Charlotte Rodriguez of New York City and 31-year-old Darious Coon of Detroit, were discovered last Saturday around 10 a.m. on the 10th floor of a parking garage near Northeast 4th Street and 2nd Avenue, just west of Biscayne Boulevard and Bayfront Park. According to Miami Police, both had been shot several times. Investigators believe the pair had only recently met while visiting Miami. Rodriguez's brother, who spoke to CBS News Miami on condition of anonymity, described his sister as kind-hearted and devoted. "She was a good person and a good mother. Everyone around her would tell you she has a good heart," he said. Determined to seek justice, he added, "We don't want this to be another case. We want justice. She did not deserve to go out this way. We hope that the detective will find the person guilty of this, or maybe if it was more than one person, all of them will face the consequences of justice." He also expressed the family's need for clarity about what happened: "We hope to know the motive because it is not fair to us to not know why someone did this and why she had to leave us so early in life." Miami Police spokesperson Officer Mike Vega said the department had been alerted that the victims were missing prior to their discovery. The investigation began after someone reported a foul odor coming from the vehicle. Vega said it's possible the bodies had been in the car since the prior Wednesday. "This is a 3 to 4-day investigation and it does not appear to be a robbery because both people in the vehicle still had their belongings with them," he noted. "We need anyone who was near the parking lot between the 16th and 19th and who heard any shots being fired or observed anything weird or suspicious to contact us," Vega said. He added that detectives are combing through several days of surveillance footage: "We have 3 or 4 days' worth of video to go through frame by frame to see when the car entered the building and parked there. We are looking at a lot of surveillance video." Anyone with information is asked to contact Miami Police or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477).

Cyclist says Corvette hit him, then sped off near Miami's hospital district
A Miami bicyclist is recounting the terrifying moment he says a silver Corvette struck him and then kept going—just steps from his home. David Miller was left with minor injuries after the crash, which happened at the intersection of Northwest 15th Road and Northwest 15th Street, not far from Miami's hospital district. "I was just going to go ride around the neighborhood," Miller said. "I've done that a few times." Miller said he was pulling out to make a left turn in front of the Modera Skylar Apartments when the Corvette hit him. "You know, I saw a car coming from my left kind of at the last minute. It was weird because when I looked left at first, I didn't see anything," he recalled. The collision launched Miller onto the hood of the Corvette. He remembers the impact vividly. "I remember going up, hitting the hood, feeling like glass breaking under my shoulder," he said. "It was a beautiful car. I very clearly saw the windshield smashed." According to Miller, the car came to a brief stop. He said there were three people inside and that the driver spoke only Spanish. "They all looked very scared and kind of relieved when they saw me get up," Miller said. "I just put my left hand up like this—I was trying to tell him, 'Hey, wait.'" Despite his gesture, Miller said the Corvette drove away. Miami Police and Miami Fire Rescue responded to the scene. Miller was treated by EMTs and walked away with only minor cuts and bruises. "It hurts to sit but for the most part I'm good and just very, very grateful," he said. Still, Miller said he hopes the driver takes responsibility. "I don't really wish ill upon anyone," he said, "but I do think they need to come forward and do the right thing." Miami Police are currently investigating the incident.
