Scandalous pastor JP Miller whose wife's death shocked America remarries just one year later
Embattled South Carolina pastor John-Paul Miller, whose wife's death shocked the nation 13 months ago, got remarried over the weekend. The 45-year-old tied the knot Sunday with his now-wife Suzie Skinner, 50, at an intimate beach wedding in Myrtle Beach, investigative journalist James Seidel reported. It was reportedly protected by security guards to look out for 'uninvited guests,' Robbie Harvey, a freelance reporter, posted on X. Harvey noted that the couple's seven combined children were not in attendance. News of Miller's third marriage comes as he continues to face mounting criticism over his second wife Mica Miller's suspicious death. Mica, 30, was found dead in North Carolina's Lumbee River State Park on April 27, 2024 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, days after filing for divorce from Miller. Suzie Skinner also lost her previous spouse, Chris Skinner, 41, who drowned when his wheelchair rolled into a neighborhood pool in Myrtle Beach on September 6, 2021. Although no foul play was initially suspected in Chris's case, Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard reopened the case in March after mysterious 'new evidence regarding the manner of death' came to light. Miller's first ex-wife Alison Williams filed a petition for sole custody of their children last June that included shocking claims about his sex life - including some involving Skinner and his wife. In the affidavit, Alison wrote that her then-husband began an affair with Suzie in 2021 by using their son, who played soccer with Suzie's son, to facilitate their liaisons. She claimed her children were 'well-aware' of the affair, which their friends also gossiped about - causing them 'a tremendous amount of embarrassment.' 'When I learned [John-Paul] was exposing our children to yet another one of his adulterous affairs, I confronted JP and Suzie and told them not to let it happen again,' she wrote. Alison divorced Miller in 2015 after discovering he was having an affair with Mica, whom he married in 2018. It's not known if his alleged 2021 affair with Suzie ended before Mica's death. 'JP called me the day Suzie's husband died in an alleged drowning accident extremely upset and asking me to pray, which was incredibly bizarre,' Alison continued in the lawsuit. 'Based on information and belief, just two weeks prior to [Skinner's death], Suzie's husband had confronted JP and asked him to leave his wife and children alone. 'It is chilling to know that the spouses of both Suzie and JP are now dead, from tragic events.' Chris's sister Tamra McDermott said Suzie called Miller to the scene soon after his body was discovered in the pool. She said the reopening of the investigation into her brother's death was partly prompted by new witnesses giving contradictory evidence to what Suzie and others told police at the time. 'When looking at the police reports and coroner reports, it is clear there was some inconsistency. Also, it was acknowledged that some of what was said at the scene may be inaccurate,' she previously told Tamra said her brother fell out of the pastor's church, Solid Rock Ministries, and with Miller himself, about four or five months before his death, after having worshipped there without issue since 2018. 'Chris definitely voiced that he did not like the pastor of that church and he did stop going to church there,' she said. 'He was in some emotional pain, and he was having a hard time... he was pulling away and distancing himself.' This period of time is understood to be a focus in the re-investigation. Mica, Miller's second wife, contacted police several times in the months preceding her suicide to level allegations against her husband, including claims he 'groomed' her when he was a teenager. He has vehemently denied any allegations of grooming and abuse. He has also previously suggested Mica suffered from mental illness and attempted suicide on more than one occasion. Mica and Miller initially split on September 20, 2023, before the divorce was dismissed on February 13. Later that same month Miller filed against his wife for separate support and maintenance in a motion withdrawn March 11. But on April 15, just 12 days before she was found dead, Mica filed for divorce once more and sought a no contact order against her husband. They split for the second time on February 6. Miller has also been accused of raping a 15-year-old girl and displaying a continued pattern of 'sexual abuse and predatory conduct for years,' according to lawsuit from February. Miller allegedly attacked the teen, known only as Jane Doe, in 1998 while at his father's church, the filing stated. In a 43-page complaint filed in Horry County Circuit Court, the unidentified woman accused Miller of raping and inappropriately touching her. The last incident occurred as recently as 2023, the woman said, with Miller accused of grabbing her genitals in public which triggered 'repressed memories.' Those repressed memories are alleged to be an assault by Miller that occurred in 1998, when she was 15 and he was 19. In the suit, it said that the trauma of that earlier alleged assault was 'deeply buried' and that Jane Doe had 'no conscious recollection of the assault.' She had been attending Sunday school at Miller's father's church when she said he forced her into his father's office, and shut the door behind him. Miller is said to have 'immediately' become 'aggressive' and 'physically overpowering' against her. After a struggle and pleading with him to stop, Miller led her from the office to outside the church, the suit claims. The woman alleged that she was forced into his truck and raped. The suit stated she was a virgin at the time.

Mica Miller's ‘list' behind recently filed coercive control bill, new push for action
HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Mica Miller's family and others are speaking out about a bill in the state senate last week to strengthen protections for victims of coercive control or domestic violence. Republican state Sen. Stephen Goldfinch of Murrells Inlet, , says it was because of Mica and her family that the bill is seeing light again. Several have been filed in past years — the most recent one in 2021. But never made it out of a committee. Mica's family says they believe if one was passed then, she would still be here today. 'Mica did not have to die for Mica's law to be written,' Mica's sister Abigail Francis said. Sunday marked one year since Mica Miller's death. Robeson County officials ruled her death a suicide after she was found at Lumber River State Park with a gunshot wound to her head. Allegations of abuse by her husband, Myrtle Beach area pastor John-Paul Miller have gained national attention. Police reports state Mica told officers she was being tracked and harassed on multiple occasions. Since then, it's prompted many like attorney Regina Ward who represented Mica to seek stronger laws. 'I think that people need to be paying attention,' Ward said. 'So, whenever that next turnover comes to who you're going to vote for, vote for someone who's going to be protecting your daughters, that's going to pass laws that protect your sister, that'll protect your mother.' The bill aims to protect victims beyond just physical abuse, using what Mica experienced as the foundation. Here is what the previous bill outlines: isolating a person from their friends and family depriving a person of basic needs monitoring a person's time monitoring a person via online communication tools or using spyware taking control over aspects of a person's everyday life, including where the person may go, who the person may see, what a person may wear, and when a person may sleep depriving a person access to support services, including medical services repeatedly insulting a person, including expressing the person's worthlessness enforcing rules and activities that humiliate, degrade, or dehumanize the person forcing a person to take part in criminal activity, including shoplifting and neglect or abuse of children, to encourage the person's self-blame and prevent disclosure to authorities financial abuse, including control of finances and only allowing a person a punitive allowance threats to hurt or kill threats to a child threats to reveal or publish private information or extort the person or a member of the person's family in retaliation by legal or other means assault rape preventing a person from having access to transport or from working Several states including California, Connecticut and Hawaii have adopted 'coercive control' laws, while similar efforts are pending in Florida, Maryland, New York and Washington, according to the group Americas Conference to End Coercive Control. Mica's sister Abigail Francis and Ward spent months reaching out to lawmakers, including Sen. Luke Rankin, who's also chair of the judiciary committee where the last bill died. Francis says she had an appointment with Rankin set up last June, but it was canceled because he says in an e-mail 'he wasn't aware of it.' He goes on to say if a bill is passed in the senate, he will assign it to a subcommittee for consideration. Ward says she's reached out to his office 12 times via email and called his office on several occasions since June and has only heard back once, recently. 'We elected you to be in that position and you are taking advantage of it and completely dismissing a very important thing that's going on in your community and that's sad,' Francis said. Unlike others, she says Goldfinch's office answered. While the recently filed bill is almost the same as the one in 2021, Goldfinch says all bills need work and can be amended. 'There's quite a few situations in the law that aren't accounted for what we call loopholes, right. Loopholes in the law, especially for a couple that's in a relationship, especially even more so for a married couple,' he said. Goldfinch says since he filed the bill, he's had many victims reach out to him making him more aware of the issue. He says he expects the bill to reach the judiciary committee in January and pass next year. Mica's sister and father, Michael Francis, say they think Mica would be proud to see her family working to protect future victims. 'She would be in my seat,' Francis said. 'I would be at home doing all the research stuff, and she would be the one talking to you. Whether she was here or not. And this was brought to our attention, we would still be doing it.' News13 reached out to Sen. Rankin multiple times in the last few months have not heard back. Mica's family asks instead of posting on social media to advocate for stronger domestic violence laws, reach out to your legislators. They encourage anyone to call, email or send letters. * * * Adrianna Lawrence is a multimedia journalist at News13. Lawmaker introduces coercive control bill nearly 1 year after Mica Miller's suicide
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WBTW) — An Horry County lawmaker has introduced a coercive control bill in the South Carolina Senate nearly one year after the suicide of Mica Miller. Republican State Sen. Stephen Goldfinch of Murrells Inlet introduced the bill during Tuesday's regular session. It was read a first time and referred to the Judiciary Committee. The bill looks to 'amend the South Carolina code of laws by adding section 16-25-140 so as to create the offense of coercive control over another person, to provide examples of the types of behavior and evidence that may be used to support the offense, to provide a penalty, and to define terms related to coercive control. Timeline: The saga of John-Paul and Mica Miller Mica Miller, the wife of Myrtle Beach pastor John-Paul Miller, died on April 27, 2024, at a state park in Robeson County. Her death was ruled a suicide, but the case sparked nationwide interest after claims surfaced that John-Paul abused her before her death. Regina Ward, the attorney for Mica's family, urged lawmakers last June to pass a coercive control bill. Four years ago, a South Carolina lawmaker filed a bill that would criminalize 'coercive control,' with punishments of up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Since that time, efforts to get such a law on the books have stalled in both chambers of the General Assembly. A 'coercive control' bill was most recently filed in 2021 by state Republican Sen. Katrina Shealy of Lexington. However, it never made it out of the Judiciary Committee, which is now led by Conway Republican Luke Rankin.
