Texas A&M finalizes 2025 football roster ahead of season opener
The Texas A&M football roster is officially locked in for the 2025 season. All player measurements and jersey numbers have been updated on the team's website, offering fans a clearer look at who will take the field this fall. It's been a chaotic offseason for the Aggies starting with the house settlement being approved, which sparked a wave of new lawsuits. The summer also saw a whirlwind of recruiting action, including the high-profile commitment and eventual decommitment of Micah Hudson. On the lighter side, several football and softball players took part in a crowd-pleasing 'Celebrity Softball Game,' giving fans a fun break from the intensity of the offseason. Now, with the season opener just a month away, attention turns toward on-field preparation. In about a week, the Aggie football team will begin gearing up for their August 30 showdown against UTSA at Kyle Field. Among all scholarship players—including incoming freshmen and transfers—only Jerome Myles didn't report early, joining the squad in June. And yes, everyone else is accounted for… except Shemar Stewart, who is working out with the team while he waits for his NFL contract to be finalized. You can view the updated roster here. Ranking Texas Tech football's 10 best transfer portal additions to 2025 roster
Thanks to the Matador Club wheeling and dealing in the name, image and likeness department, the Texas Tech football team has loaded up on talent from the transfer portal. Does that make the Red Raiders a favorite to win the Big 12 championship? That's still up for debate. What isn't debatable is that Texas Tech's prospects this season, and the stress level of head coach Joey McGuire, largely hinge on the transfer portal haul producing at a high level during the 2025 season. Advertisement Texas Tech added 16 players in the winter portal and brought in another five in the spring. Which of these are the best of the best? Here's our ranking: Lee Hunter wraps up Quinten Joyner for a tackle during the Texas Tech football team's spring game, Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Jones AT&T Stadium. 10. Micah Hudson, WR, Texas Tech This one is a bit tricky, considering Micah Hudson was only away from the team for about five months, but he is an addition, so we'll count it here. Hudson's freshman year at Texas Tech didn't get much traction, so he opted to transfer to Texas A&M before coming back to Tech in the spring portal. He still has to show he was a highly-touted prospect out of high school for a reason, and he and the Red Raiders are giving it another shot. 9. Cole Wisniewski, S, North Dakota State Coming from FCS powerhouse North Dakota State, Cole Wisniewski has played in plenty of big games. But the 6-foot-4, 220 safety missed all of last season with a foot injury. He showed a nose for the ball during the spring and coaches raved about his leadership ability in the secondary. 8. Romello Height, EDGE, Georgia Tech Looking at Romello Height's biceps can be intimidating enough, but the well-traveled edge rusher is being asked to take on a big role in a revamped defense that lacked pressure on the quarterback and failed to generate much chaos in the opponents' backfield. 7. Skyler Gill-Howard, DT, Northern Illinois Starting his career at Upper Iowa and walking on at Northern Illinois, Skyler Gill-Howard has bet on himself throughout his career. Even switching from linebacker to defensive tackle has paid off for the Milwaukee native. 6. Howard Sampson, OT, North Carolina With two years of eligibility left, the Red Raiders may have found their new cornerstone on the offensive line — that is, if the NFL doesn't scoop him up after this year. Howard Sampson is an imposing 6-foot-8 and 325 pounds and is one of the few linemen who will probably occupy the same position all season. Terrance Carter Jr. celebrates his touchdown during the Texas Tech football team's spring game, Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Jones AT&T Stadium. 5. Terrance Carter, TE, Louisiana Terrance Carter burst onto the scene last season with 48 catches for 689 yards and four touchdowns. Calling himself a "one of a kind" athlete at the tight end position, Carter will pair with returner Johncarlos Miller II in the passing and run-blocking game. 4. Reggie Virgil, WR, Miami (Ohio) A downfield threat who totaled 816 yards and nine touchdowns a season ago, Reggie Virgil missed most of the spring with a broken toe, but easily placed himself as the other starting outside receiver along with Caleb Douglas before that. 3. Quinten Joyner, RB, USC While Tech's new offensive coaches see the replacement of Tahj Brooks being a by-committee approach, it's Quinten Joyner who has a case to be the bell cow. The former Top 100 recruit had 478 yards and three scores on the ground last season playing for Lincoln Riley and could exceed that in a hurry in a Red Raider uniform. 2. Lee Hunter, DT, UCF The Fridge, as Lee Hunter is affectionately known, has made a big impression on the Red Raiders already. A second-team all-Big 12 selection spent time trying to disrupt the Texas Tech offense while at UCF and will do the same in Jones AT&T Stadium in favor of the Red Raiders this season. 1. David Bailey, EDGE, Stanford The addition few saw coming and perhaps the most impactful of them all, David Bailey adds an immediate upgrade to the EDGE position and provides depth to a defense in desperate need of it. Had Stanford not fired its head coach earlier this year, Bailey is probably still with the Cardinal. Instead, Tech's potential success on defense rests on Bailey's ability to create chaos. Former Five-Star WR Makes Unique Transfer Portal Decision
The college football transfer portal may have closed this past Friday, but thousands of players still have yet to find a new home. On Sunday, one of the biggest names in the portal came off of the board. After pledging to Texas Tech as the school's first five-star recruit in program history in 2024, wide receiver Micah Hudson not only had an underwhelming season, but also left the program via the transfer portal. Advertisement He initially signed to play for Mike Elko and the Texas A&M Aggies in December, but ended up returning to the transfer portal. Despite a slew of programs coming after him for his second portal stint, it was confirmed on Sunday by On3 that Hudson would be returning back to Texas Tech. Texas Tech Red Raiders wide receiver Micah Hudson© Annie Rice/Avalanche-Journal / USA TODAY NETWORK Hudson also took to social media to send a message to Texas Tech and its fans, expressing his excitement for his return. "Red Raider Nation, Lubbock has always been home, and I'm forever grateful to the Coaching staff, teammates and fans who make that possible," Hudson wrote. "I'm back to finish what I started. This experience taught me a lot about myself and what it truly means to be a part of the Texas Tech family. God Bless! Wreck 'Em, Micah Hudson." Advertisement In his freshman season, Hudson had just eight catches for 123 yards. He joins a Texas Tech transfer portal class that ranks as the No. 2 class in all of college football, as the Red Raiders will look to make a run at the Big 12 title and College Football Playoff. Former Texas A&M wide receiver transfers back to Texas Tech
Former Texas A&M wide receiver transfers back to Texas Tech In the most unsurprising move of the offseason, former five-star wide receiver Micah Hudson, who played just one season with Texas Tech before transferring to Texas A&M this offseason was back in the transfer portal less than two months after committing to the Aggies, as the talented pass catcher couldn't find his footing with either team despite having a strong connection with A&M during his recruiting process. While Hudson looked like a must-have offseason addition for Texas A&M, coach Mike Elko and wide receiver coach Holmon Wiggins landed commitments from KC Concepcion (NC State) and Mario Craver (Mississippi State) while 2025 five-star signee Jerome Myles solidified the Aggies' receiver rotation, making Hudson's sudden departure easier to digest. Hudson's elite traits, led by his speed and twitchiness at the top of his breaks made him a top option in the portal, garnering plenty of attention from Power 5 programs, but a return to Texas Tech was always in the cards, and became the favorite landing spot over the last two weeks. Well, it became official after Hudson received a prediction from On3's Pete Nakos that Hudson would return to Lubbock last week, as he will transfer back to Texas Tech and likely compete for a starting spot with the Red Raiders in 2025. Again, this was always the way, as familiar territory means a seamless transition for a player that still has a high ceiling. Former 2024 5-star recruit Micah Hudson transfers back to Texas Tech after leaving for Texas A&M in December
LUBBOCK, TEXAS - OCTOBER 19: Micah Hudson #1 of the Texas Tech Red Raiders runs a route during the first half of the game against the Baylor Bears at Jones AT&T Stadium on October 19, 2024 in Lubbock, Texas. (Photo by John E.) Former five-star recruit Micah Hudson is heading back to Texas Tech after transferring away from the school after the 2024 season. Hudson was a top-10 recruit in the class of 2024 and widely expected to make an immediate impact with the Red Raiders. That didn't happen. Thanks to injuries, he played in eight games and had eight catches for 123 yards without a TD. Ten players had more catches than Hudson did in 2024. Advertisement Hudson entered the transfer portal after the season and transferred to Texas A&M. He spent just months with the Aggies, however. In March, Hudson was in the transfer portal again. He's now heading back to Lubbock. The Temple, Texas, native was the No. 9 recruit in the class of 2024 and the No. 4 wide receiver. He was the top recruit in the state of Texas and his commitment was seen as a coup for Joey McGuire's staff. Texas Tech has been one of the most active teams in the transfer portal this offseason as they have benefitted heavily from a greater NIL investment ahead of the potential House settlement in 2026. The Red Raiders have the No. 3 transfer class in the country according to Rivals and have landed four top-100 transfers. Rivals' top-ranked Tech transfer is Purdue cornerback Tarrion Grant, and the team has also added two top offensive lineman through the portal. The Red Raiders finished 8-5 in 2024 after losing the Liberty Bowl to Arkansas. With the Big 12 wide open in 2025, Tech figures to be one of the favorites after going 6-3 in conference play last season.
