This is going to be Michael 2.0 – Van Gerwen ‘excited' to return in New York
Michael van Gerwen is ready to launch 'Michael 2.0' as he returns to darts after more than a month off. Van Gerwen is back at the oche for the US Darts Masters in New York in what is his first tournament since the final round of weekly Premier League nights in Sheffield on May 22. The Dutchman, who will wear a new shirt at the Madison Square Garden event, has taken time away from the game to deal with his divorce from wife Daphne. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Michael van Gerwen (@mvg180) But he is ready to get back into action in an event he has won twice before. 'This is going to be a new Michael. Michael 2.0,' he said. 'I am really excited, everyone knows I have had very tough times, still going on, but I am dealing with it, living by the moment. 'I still love what I do. I play darts. We all need to understand one thing, there is only one thing I love more and that is my kids. 'I wouldn't be here if I wasn't here to win, I want to come here and put my head on something else, that is something that is really important. 'I also need to be realistic, I have never been in this situation, never had so many weeks of not playing competitive darts. My head says something else, my head says I have to smash it.' Van Gerwen will be in a strong field that also includes Luke Littler, Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price. Humphries is yet to win this event but is desperate to add it to his collection. 'It's great to be back, it's such an iconic venue, I always look forward to this one most on the World Series,' the world number one said. 'This is the one all the players want to win, it is really special. 🇺🇸 The countdown is on! Nathan Aspinall is also playing and hinted he has a better chance of winning without his wife and the distraction of the bright lights of New York. 'It's great to come to America, normally my wife has been with me, but I'm on my own so it's a bit different to previous years,' Aspinall said. 'I think I'm going to be a bit more focused on the tournament itself than previous years, which hopefully means I can go and win it.'

Michael van Gerwen 2.0 says his kids come first as legend hunts darts resurgence
Dutch star outlines priorities as returns in New York New-look Michael van Gerwen is adamant his kids comes first as he also plots his way back to the summit of darts. The Dutch darts star is in New York to make his first competitive appearance since the publicly announced marriage split from wife Daphne. Van Gerwen took time away from the game, but he's back for Madison Square Gardens and hungry to get back into top form as quickly as possible. The three-times World Champion is gunning for instant success, but is adamant children Zoe and Mike will always come before anything else as he sets about the next stage of his career. He said: 'I'm going to live by the moment because we all know where I'm coming from, what position I'm in and I need to make sure I do the right thing for me and my kids, of course. "We all know I had a really tough period, but I also like to play darts, so I need to find the right combination of things. We all need to understand, I love playing darts, but I love one thing more and that's my kids. 'I want to live a bit healthier as well and I still want to do this in 10 years' time, so I think you need to make sacrifices in life, simple as that. "I see how things go, but I'm living by the moment. It's going to be a new Michael. Michael 2.0. I'm not here to be a participant. "I'm here to do a good job. I'm also realistic, but my head says I have to smash them. It always feel nice to be here and, if I didn't like it, I wouldn't be here. 'The PDC do a good job here, but now also with the new streaming platform Peacock, I think they've made an incredible new deal because they are big over here and you can see darts is growing. "It takes time, but I think if you compare darts with other sports, with rugby, with cricket, I think darts does better if you look at the numbers, I'm excited for this tournament again and I think that's the only thing that matters at the moment.' Van Gerwen is on a health kick and sporting a new black outfit as he changes direction and said: 'We made a nice plan of what we were going to do, but this was already before all the troubles I had. "But now I'm looking forward to a new Michael. I have more success in this tournament than anyone else ever, so I need to make sure I'm going to maintain that. "I can do that by giving 100 per cent. I will do that. I'm also realistic. I know I've had some tough periods, but if I was thinking I couldn't do any damage in this tournament, I wouldn't be here. I can say whatever I want now. You still need to let your darts speak.'
