Cowboys Ex Update Hits Commanders With More Bad News

Cowboys Ex Update Hits Commanders With More Bad News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Washington Commanders wide receiver room received a lot of attention at the tail end of OTAs, mainly for negative reasons. Advertisement All-Pro Terry McLaurin was absent because of frustrations regarding his contract situation, trade addition Deebo Samuel was subject to internet trolling from a video that accuses him of being overweight, and now Noah Brown, the famed receiver of last year's memorable Hail Mary against Chicago, was carted off the practice field with an injury. Then there's Michael Gallup, who is attempting a comeback to the NFL after a one-year retirement stint during 2024. Ever since his announcement to return to football and sign with Washington, we haven't heard much about him at team activities. That's because Gallup is dealing with a hamstring strain, in rather inopportune timing. Add this to the long list of receiver-related distractions and disturbances to the Commanders' offseason. Advertisement Gallup had his share of injuries in his long career with the Dallas Cowboys, but it appears the year off didn't do him any favors in refreshing the body. Not only does this set back put a dampener on Gallup's chances at proving that he can still play, but it also affects the Commanders' depth. With McLaurin's situation up in the air and Brown and Gallup suffering injuries, Washington is left with Samuel leading the charge alongside two very young pieces in last year's second-rounder Luke McCaffrey and rookie Jaylin Lane. Gallup was brought in on a supposed low-risk signing to help fill out the group. Now the one thing that could've caused concern has come up in injuries. Advertisement Head coach Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury were not expecting to see the room take a hit like this a month out from training camp. For Gallup in particular, this injury couldn't have come at a worse possible time. McLaurin and Brown's situation would have put Gallup higher on the depth chart during OTAs to get him exposure and reps ... but now he'll have to hope he recovers smoothly and is given another shot. If not, he may end up in a similar head space as last offseason, with little motivation to continue his career. Commanders faithful are hoping he can pull through, because their team's receiver situation is already facing a large amount of turmoil this offseason. Reports: Commanders WR Noah Brown hurt during minicamp drill

June 12 - Washington Commanders wide receiver Noah Brown was carted off the field with an apparent injury after making a catch during minicamp on Wednesday, according to multiple reports. Brown, 29, caught a short pass from Marcus Mariota during 7-on-7 drills and stayed on the ground before slowly getting to his feet and limping off to the sideline, where he threw his helmet. He met with athletic trainers and was carted to the team facility. Brown, who re-signed with the Commanders as a free agent in March, has dealt with injuries throughout his seven-year career. That includes the kidney injury he suffered against the Tennessee Titans on Dec. 1, 2024 that knocked him out for the rest of the season, including the Commanders' run to the NFC championship game. Last season, his first in Washington, Brown played in 11 games (nine starts) and made 35 receptions on 56 targets for 453 yards. His lone touchdown came on a 52-yard Hail Mary pass that gave host Washington an 18-15 win over the Chicago Bears on Oct. 27. A seventh-round draft pick by Dallas in 2017, the Ohio State alum has 150 catches for 2,000 yards and six TDs in 87 games (34 starts) with the Cowboys (2017-18, 2020-22), Houston Texans (2023) and Commanders. The Commanders also were without veteran Michael Gallup on Tuesday and Wednesday, reportedly due to a strained hamstring. A Dallas receiver from 2018-23, Gallup, 29, signed with Washington in March after coming out of a retirement that he announced in July 2024. --Field Level Media

Cowboys found no fat to trim as NFL teams shed epic $600 million of salary in 2025

Cowboys found no fat to trim as NFL teams shed epic $600 million of salary in 2025 No dead weight? None?? Cowboys looked at their carryover roster and found no fat to trim. Year after year, the Dallas Cowboys are saddled with dead money from players who they drafted, gave second contracts to and later walked away from. Just in 2025, the Cowboys have over $31 million of cap space being used on Zack Martin, Michael Gallup, DeMarcus Lawrence, Brandin Cooks and others who won't be on the team. Last year, Ezekiel Elliott took up a huge chunk of cap space, so much so it made financial sense to bring him back just to get some productivity out of the situation.v But it appears that in 2026 that won't so much be the case. The club will still have $17 million of dead money tied into Martin, who retired last month, and any player set to make guaranteed money this year who doesn't make it out of training camp will up that figure, but the Cowboys avoided the fate of 25 other NFL teams this spring. According to salary website Over The Cap, 25 teams have already shaved just under $600 million in salary through releasing veteran players this offseason. Dallas is one of just seven clubs that haven't released anyone of significant salary. The Jets led all NFL teams by releases that saved them $77.75 million in 2025 salary. No other team topped $50 million, with Seattle second at $49.3 million and San Francisco third at $43.8 million. No position saw more unrealized salary than the defensive line, with interior defensive linemen totaling $129 million in savings and edge rushers second at $124 million. When it comes to managing the salary cap, NFL teams have many things to consider. All contract types have pros and cons. Long-term agreements allow the spreading out of cap hits, but risk the dreaded dead money status when players don't perform as expected. Short deals have less long-term impact, but don't allow fancy accounting and generally cost the same against the cap that they do in cash to the player. The Cowboys have generally fallen into a pattern with their contracts. They don't award long-term deals and guaranteed money to outsiders, instead only taking on such risks for players who have performed for their organization. Outsiders are only given short-term deals so that if things don't work out, there's not a long trail of financial impact beyond their stay with the team. One would think such an approach limits the amount of dead money taking up space under the Cowboys' annual cap but that hasn't been the case. The Cowboys could still alter there standing here. There are still a handful of players whose jobs may be in jeopardy come training camp. Players such as Donovan Wilson, Malik Hooker and Damone Clark has sizable base salaries that would result in savings if they are pushed so far down the depth chart it doesn't make financial sense to keep them.

Why did the Commanders sign formerly retired veteran NFL wide receiver?

Is newly signed, formerly retired ex-Cowboys receiver Michael Gallup a wasted roster spot for Washington? Most Commanders fans should know and recall Gallup from his six seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. In the NFC East, the Cowboys and Commanders play twice each season, so there was more than enough opportunity to see Gallup getting open in the Washington secondary and catching passes for large gains. Welcome back, Michael GallupCowboys 12, Commanders 7 — Jon Machota (@jonmachota) October 2, 2022 In his six seasons in Dallas, Gallup started 67 games, caught 266 passes, for 3,744 yards, including 21 receiving touchdowns and 182 first downs, averaging 14.1 yards per reception. In his final season with Dallas (2023) Gallup produced his lowest career receiving yards season with only 418. Gallup also only caught two touchdown passes and also had a career season low in receiving first downs (19). But then in the Cowboys' playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers (48-32), Gallup had his best game of the season, catching six passes for 103 yards and a touchdown. It was Gallup's first 100-yard receiving game since Thanksgiving 2021 vs the Las Vegas Raiders. However, it was not enough to save his job, as the Cowboys, seeing the overall decline in Gallup's game, released him in the offseason (March 15, 2024). In April, Gallup signed with the Raiders as a free agent, but on July 23, 2024, before the start of training camp, Gallup announced his retirement from the NFL at the age of 28. So, why did the Commanders invest in signing Gallup, especially since he has already retired once at only 28? Well, the investment is minimal for the Commanders. Gallup had no salary leverage, so he agreed to come and try to make the team, only earning the league veteran minimum. Noah Brown is coming off a serious kidney injury, and the Commanders lost Olamide Zaccheaus and Dyami Brown in free agency. So, signing Gallup, who now says after sitting out the 2024 season, he again wants to play. If he doesn't make the team, there is no guaranteed money, and the Commanders don't lose anything. If Gallup is really passionate about returning and shows he can still contribute, then isn't it great to get a receiver who has shown he can make big plays, is a good locker room guy, and he just turned 29 in March? Michael Gallup signs with Commanders instead of the Seahawks

Michael Gallup signs with Commanders instead of the Seahawks The Seattle Seahawks are always remaining active in free agency, refusing to leave any stone unturned. That is why they hosted recently un-retired former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup for a free agent visit. The 29-year-old was briefly a member of the Las Vegas Raiders last year before abruptly retiring in July. Now he is aiming to make his NFL comeback. However, he won't be doing it as a Seattle Seahawk. ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting Gallup will sign with the other Washington... the Washington Commanders, that is. We at Seahawks Wire advocated for Seattle to roll the dice on Gallup, signing him to provide depth to the team's wide receiver corps. He has not been the same since his ACL injury, but the Seahawks wouldn't have been relying on him to be a top contributor. Instead, he will be playing with a former division rival. The move signifies another by a Commanders team ready to take the next step to become a legitimate contender in the NFC. Washington surprised the NFL with their 12-5 record (most wins in a single season by the franchise since 1991, and first winning record since 2016) and trip to the NFC Championship. Their magic carpet ride came to screeching halt at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles, who routed them to the tune of 55-23 en route to their eventual dominant Super Bowl LIX victory. While Gallup may have been an intriguing option/gamble, it's hard to be too upset (if at all) that he decided to not sign with the Seahawks. Overall, Seattle has made several splashes in the free agent market with Sam Darnold, Cooper Kupp and another former Dallas Cowboy in DeMarcus Lawrence.
