Wilmington man charged with death of his father makes first court appearance
A man charged in connection with the death of his father appeared in New Hanover County District Court on Monday, July 7. Camden White, 19, of Wilmington, appeared in court on Monday afternoon. His bond was set at $500,000. Upon posting bond, he will be placed on house arrest and subjected to frequent drug screenings. White has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his father, Michael White. The victim died from an apparent gunshot wound on July 5, according to a news release from the Wilmington Police Department. Camden White was arrested on July 3 in connection with charges of attempted common law robbery and impeding traffic on May 24, according to court records. White was also charged with injury to personal property in connection with an incident on May 28. He was released on July 3 after posting a $10,000 bond related to the prior arrest, according to court records. A district attorney requested that White not be granted a bond. The attorney said that White exhibited a pattern of dangerous behavior, noting the theft charges stemming from an incident where numerous businesses and vehicles were broken into. The district attorney said that White was hallucinating under impairing substances at the time of the incident. The attorney said that he is believed to have been under the influence of the same substances at the time of the alleged shooting death. White's defending attorney said that he was under the effects of lysergic acid diethylamide, commonly known as LSD, at the time of both incidents. The defending attorney said that the LSD was provided by the defendant's father. White was hospitalized for 12-18 hours following the theft incident, his attorney said. Several family members, including White's mother, attended the appearance in support. The family was not available for comment following the hearing. White is scheduled to appear in court on July 24. The Wilmington Police Department responded to the 200 block of Colonial Drive following reports of gunshots inside a nearby residence around 12:30 a.m. on July 5, according to an earlier news release. Officers cleared the home and located Michael White upstairs, dead from an apparent gunshot wound, the release stated. Officers located the suspect and detained him. New Multiply Mortgage Report Highlights Strong Demand for Employer-Provided Mortgage Benefits in a Difficult Housing Market
DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Multiply Mortgage, the financial technology company making homeownership more accessible through employee benefits, today released findings from its 2025 workforce survey, 'The State of Mortgage Benefits.' The report reveals that limited savings, finding affordable homes, and finding effective and trustworthy professionals with which to work continue to make homeownership difficult for many American workers. The data also point to a clear opportunity for employers to support their workforce with mortgage-related benefits that improve financial wellness, job satisfaction, and productivity. In a national survey of 1,000 full-time U.S. employees conducted in May 2025, nearly half said they live paycheck to paycheck, and a third have less than $1,000 in savings. Many feel unprepared for major financial decisions like buying a home, with few turning to professionals for support. Instead, most rely on real estate websites, agents, or advice from friends and family. 'This data confirms what we're hearing from employees and employers alike,' said Michael White, co-founder and CEO of Multiply Mortgage. 'People are under financial pressure, and homeownership feels further out of reach than ever. Employers are looking for meaningful ways to help, especially when budgets are tight. In fact, our survey found that about a quarter of employers have cut back on benefits in the past year. Mortgage benefits are one way to provide that support without adding cost.' This financial uncertainty is not just a personal issue. It shows up at work. Employees planning to buy a home report that the process affects their productivity. Nearly three-quarters of workers say they've spent hours each week at work worrying about, or distracted by, their housing situation. 12.1% reported that they spend more than 6 hours each week worrying or distracted. Nearly 70% of respondents believe that mortgage support from their employer would help them stay more focused. The demand from employees for mortgage benefits is clear. Two-thirds of employees said they find access to lower mortgage rates through their employer to be extremely valuable. Nearly three in four would be more likely to join a company offering this kind of support, with 23.1% going as far as to say it would be a deciding factor. One in three employees say mortgage benefits would significantly improve their satisfaction at work, and 34.7% say these benefits would strengthen their loyalty to their employer. At a time when compensation budgets are tight, mortgage benefits offer employers a practical, no-cost way to provide real financial value to their employees to increase employee retention and loyalty while aiding recruitment efforts. Lawyers, children's advocates, call for SA's Youth Treatment Orders program to be scrapped
A controversial program allowing young drug-dependent South Australians to be detained against their will for treatment should be scrapped, a government review has been told. While the SA government states the aim of its Youth Treatment Orders (YTO) program is to "protect and support children", lawyers, children's advocates, and drug and alcohol services want it gone. "It's a very expensive experiment," SA Network of Drug and Alcohol Services executive director, Michael White, said. "Scrap the program altogether and invest the money in assertive engagement with young people." According to the government the YTO program "was the first of its kind in Australia". In its current form, the scheme allows SA's Youth Court to order drug-dependent young people who are already detained at Adelaide's youth detention centre to receive mandatory treatment, if they refuse to engage in programs voluntarily. As part of a legislated review now underway, the government is considering expanding the scheme to allow the court to order any drug-dependent child in the community to be detained for mandatory treatment — irrespective of their involvement in the criminal justice system. Laws granting such powers passed state parliament with bipartisan support in 2019, but the legislation is yet to be fully implemented. "Most young people who have a severe alcohol or drug dependence do not require mandated treatment, they require intensive, assertive care," Mr White said. "At the minute, we see very little funding going into early intervention, prevention, or education around alcohol and other drugs, and we do not see enough funding going into assertive engagement and long-term support for young people." In February, the Attorney-General's Department (AGD) sent a discussion paper to a select group of organisations and individuals, asking them to provide feedback on the YTO program. The department initially refused an ABC News request for a copy of the document, but it later handed the paper over in response to a freedom of information application. According to the document, since the YTO program launched in 2021, only one child has been assessed for drug dependency, but they were not ordered to undergo mandatory treatment. That is despite independent modelling by the University of Adelaide estimating that up to 44 detained children would need to be assessed for drug dependency issues each year, and five would require mandatory treatment. A department spokesperson told ABC News it had been difficult to predict the actual take-up rate of the YTO scheme, as it was an "entirely new program". They said the department spent almost $7,000 on services provided to the child who was assessed for drug dependency, on top of $179,760 required to establish the YTO scheme. "AGD has continued to monitor the YTO scheme to assess demand and resource implication," the spokesperson said. In a submission to the department, SA Law Society president Marissa Mackie wrote that she found it "difficult to understand the rationale for any further expansion of the scheme", given the low take-up rate. She wrote the YTO program had "tension" with Australia's obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. "[The YTO scheme] is not consistent with medical evidence or good practice in dealing with drug addiction," she wrote. Guardian for Children and Young People Shona Reid, who in 2023 stepped down as the "YTO Visitor" responsible for monitoring the program, said Adelaide's youth detention centre was not equipped to provide healthcare to young people experiencing drug dependency. "We can't detain our way out of youth drug use," she said. But SA Parole Board chairperson Frances Nelson told ABC News the YTO program was useful and should be expanded to the broader community. "If you detain young people, you provide them with an external structure to deal with their problems when they don't have the internal strength to do it themselves," she said. "You also take them away from an environment which obviously is unhealthy for whatever reason. "If you can deal with young people taking drugs, they're less likely to become adult criminals, so I think there are benefits to the young person and to the community." Ms Frances said while early intervention programs were important, there needed to be a "last resort" option if voluntary treatment was not working. "It's no different as a measure of philosophy to detaining unwell people under the Mental Health Act for their own safety," she said. The department is required under legislation to complete its review by November 21.

Manhattan's power scene is back in full force at this luxe new Italian restaurant from Michael White: It's Marea 2.0
Midtown has its pre-pandemic swagger back — and People's Exhibit No. 1 is Santi (11 E. 53d St.), the buzzing new modern-Italian restaurant from celebrated chef Michael White. Its nexus of corporate power, great pasta and fun people-watching make it the area's hottest scene since White's Marea opened in prehistoric 2009. After splitting with the Altamarea group in 2021 due to disagreements over the company's direction, White has spent most of his time launching new venues in Florida. (A consulting gig at the Lambs Club on West 44th Street lasted only a few months in 2022.) 10 Michael White is back in NYC with Santi. EMMY PARK 10 The elegant midtown address was once home to White's Alto. EMMY PARK Santi, launched by his BBianco Hospitality Group with business partner Bruce Bronster, marks his triumphant, full-scale Big Apple return. Marea's still going strong and Midtown has other established, excellent Italian restaurants such as Il Gattopardo, Cellini and Fresco by Scotto. But others faded and the scene needed new blood. Santi delivers it for everyone — from shoppers and museum-goers to a Who's Who of Midtown glitterati. Once home to White's aughts-era hit Alto, the venue has overnight became a haunt where the city's prime movers wheel-and-deal over homemade gnocchi and tagliatelle, and cocktails such as the Fifty-Fifty, which features Taggiasca gin, made with prized Ligurian olives. Santi's pleasures unspool through several main areas designed by Michaelis Boyd, gorgeously lit by L'Observatoire International and festooned with luminous portraits from Bronster's private collection. Each section draws a different crowd. The front dining room, a few steps down from a horseshoe-shaped bar for the after-work, sip-and-flirt set, draws movers and shakers to its semicircular booths and banquettes. It's become a canteen for bankers at market-moving investment firm Jefferies Group and its CEO Rich Handler, who work upstairs. On any given afternoon or evening, you might spot Henry Kravis, Barry Diller or real estate mogul Bill Rudin, who's planning a new skyscraper a few blocks away. 10 Midtown power players are flocking to Santi. EMMY PARK 10 With dishes such a succulent veal chop, Santi's food is worthy of the five Michelin stars that White has earned at previous restaurants. . EMMY PARK Boldfaces such as Eva Longoria and Queen Rania of Jordan have popped in, too. Pop star Beck ordered a comfort dish from heaven — hand-folded tortellini ($36) filled with prosciutto, mortadella, pork and Parmigiano Reggiano, finished in a creamy sea of cheese and butter. A circular staircase leads to the slightly more intimate mezzanine, after passing a huge,1800s mirror that Bronster found buried under a Southampton barn. The upstairs area has attracted art and fashion luminaries such as designers Diane von Furstenberg and Michael Kors and painter Kehinde Wiley. The restaurant's noisiest section is the ground-floor atrium, where light globes suspended from the double-height ceiling suggest a galaxy in formation. On my visits, it drew canoodling couples in the corners and noisy groups of guys at middle tables. Fortunately, new wall fabrics and sound bafflers have begun to soften the din. 10 Amberjack crudo is one of many great seafood dishes. EMMY PARK 10 Gnocchi in tomato sauce is a standout pasta dish. EMMY PARK The menu, executed by the kitchen team of Jason Lin and Sol Han, is worthy of the five Michelin stars White earned at his other places. It boasts splendid seafood, both raw and cooked, like tasty, toothsome amberjack crudo ($32) and pleasingly moist halibut ($55) pan-seared on one side and then poached in extra-virgin olive oil. But the pastas — all original, none replicating White's previous plates — are the crowning glory. 'We've been deliberate about not copying expected dishes because that's not fun or challenging, and our guests deserve more than a rehash of old ideas,' White told me. The sautéed Italian breadcrumbs known as mollica, a White hallmark in the past, are mostly absent, letting the pasta and sauces speak for themselves. 10 Some notable guests, such as musician Beck, favor the booths in the front room. EMMY PARK 10 Beyond the front room is the elegant-but-noisy atrium. EMMY PARK Tagliatelle Ragu ($36), which Wiley has ordered more than once, gets my vote. The coarse-ground beef and pork are gently broken down to a velvety texture by a judicious infusion of milk. My favorite, though, was ricotta gnocchi ($28), lighter than the potato-filled variety and bathed in San Marzano tomato-and-basil sauce — a brave statement when too many chefs shy away from red sauce lest their dishes be mocked as Italian-American dinosaurs. 10 A sweeping staircase leads up to a mezzanine. EMMY PARK 10 The mezzanine dining area is slightly more intimate. EMMY PARK But I miss White's legendary fusilli with braised octopus and bone marrow, his heart-stopping, red-sauce masterpiece at Marea. Per Se's Thomas Keller once called his favorite dish in New York. Is there any chance we'll see it again at Santi? When asked, White smiled and said coyly, 'I'm talking to my chefs about it.'
