Southgate man injured after a pickup hit a highway wall, police say

A Southgate man got emergency medical aid on site and was taken to the hospital after a Ford F-150 he was driving struck a highway wall Thursday in Metro Detroit. Several 911 calls had been made to the Detroit Regional Communication Center about the situation that was noticed about 6:40 p.m. Thursday on Westbound I-94 near Miller Road, the Michigan State Police reported. Some of the calls indicated that the driver appeared to be in convulsions. Another witness was trying to get into the vehicle to provide first aid. When police arrived, the 55-year-old man was still in the car and unresponsive. "Signs of potential drug use were also found in the vehicle," the state police report said. Troopers and Dearborn Police officers attempted CPR and Narcan until Dearborn EMS crews arrived and took over. The man's pulse returned while medics were tending to him. After he was taken to a hospital, he regained consciousness and was alert. "Great work by troopers and officers in using their training to stabilize this driver prior to EMS arriving," F/Lt Mike Shaw said about the incident. "Once the investigation is completed, troopers will forward an investigators report to the prosecutor for review."

Ted Nugent brought a firearm into the Michigan Capitol despite a ban, state police say

Michigan police are investigating whether rock musician and avid sportsman Ted Nugent brought a concealed firearm into the Michigan Capitol building Wednesday. Nugent was at the statehouse Wednesday to testify at a joint committee hearing about the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, requesting accountability over DNR actions relating to hunting regulations. When arriving, Nugent entered the building at the north entrance, a Michigan State Police spokesperson said in their statement. "The weapons detection system functioned correctly and alerted to a possible weapon; however, the trooper staffing the entry point did not see the alert until after Mr. Nugent left the screening area," state police said. "How did this happen?" state Rep. Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia) said in a video posted to Instagram. She was among the legislators attending the hearing that Nugent participated in. Pohutsky said early in the proceedings, she was among those who realized Nugent was carrying a firearm at the time. She and others flagged the attention of the Capitol sergeant and the state police. "We are still evaluating how the weapons detection alert was missed and will be following up to ensure this does not happen again," a statement from the Michigan State Police spokesperson said in response to the circumstances. Nugent's arguments included what some hunters, anglers and residents consider to be overreach in the state's conservation laws. The state Capitol has bans on open carry and concealed weapons, policies that went into effect in recent years. There are exceptions for on-duty law enforcement officers and legislators who have a concealed carry permit. Nugent would not have met either of those requirements as a citizen who was on site to testify. Nothing was done during the meeting, she added. "Upon completing his meeting, MSP personnel contacted Mr. Nugent and notified him of the weapons policy, and he complied," state police said. "I don't think anything is going to be done about it, but it's obviously not acceptable," Pohutsky said after learning that the firearm actually was detected at the scanner check-in. CBS News Detroit has reached out to Nugent's team for comment. The above video originally aired on June 25.

Police execute search warrant at Michigan Lottery office in Livonia

The Michigan State Police said its Fraud Investigation Section executed a search warrant on Thursday, June 26, at the Michigan Lottery office in Livonia, Michigan. According to a statement, MSP says the search warrant is part of "an ongoing investigation referred to us from Michigan Lottery." MSP did not provide further details on the search or the investigation. Michigan Lottery issued the following statement: "The Michigan Lottery is committed to integrity and transparency. This investigation was initiated by the Lottery and is in no way connected to the integrity of Lottery games. The Lottery will continue to partner with the Michigan State Police in their ongoing investigation." Johnny Watkins says he went to the Livonia office on Plymouth Road to claim a prize when he noticed that the office was closed. Watkins says he was not informed that the building was closed and saw a sign on the door. Watkins says he later learned that MSP was at the office. CBS News Detroit went to the building and saw a sign that reads, "This office is temporarily closed. To schedule an appointment, please call 844-917-6325." "I got here two minutes after 2 p.m., and I had seen the sign on the door, and I got the information from somebody else, and we don't know what happened," Watkins tells CBS News Detroit. "I'm kind of bummed out that that happened." Dallas Bird, who owns the Anytime Fitness gym next to the lottery office, says he spotted three unmarked police vehicles and officers outside the building. "It seemed like something serious was going down," Bird says.

Video shows Michigan State Police helicopter track pharmacy break-in suspects

A Michigan State Police helicopter crew assigned to the Trooper 2 unit assisted police officers on the ground with spotting and pursuing suspects in a pharmacy break-in. State police provided a video clip of the surveillance and arrest that happened late Wednesday in response to a break-in near 10 Mile Road and Haggerty Road. The aviation unit had been requested to assist a multi-jurisdictional task force that was investigating multiple pharmacy break-ins across Metro Detroit, the report said. While in the air, Trooper 2's crew saw a break-in taking place and reported what was going on. As police arrived in the area, three suspects who were inside the pharmacy were quickly arrested. But a fourth person ran into the nearby car and sped off. Trooper 2's crew continued to follow that vehicle and tracked its location while local and state police attempted to stop the suspect. At one point, the video shows, the suspect stopped the vehicle and ran off through a neighborhood. The Trooper 2 crew was able to track the suspect on the ground until Michigan State Police troopers, Michigan State Police K-9 units and Detroit Police Department took the person into custody. "Our aviation unit continues to assist our partners across the state in getting dangerous suspects out of our communities," F/Lt. Mike Shaw said. "While pursuits may be necessary at times, it is safer to use all the technology available to take these dangerous criminals off the street as safely as possible."
