Japan's former emperor Akihito diagnosed with another heart condition
Find out what's new on ST website and app. Former emperor Akihito was admitted to the hospital on July 14, and discharged on July 18. TOKYO - Japan's former emperor Akihito has been diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia, a heart rhythm disorder that causes a rapid heartbeat in the upper chambers of the heart, the Imperial Household Agency said on July 18 . The agency said the diagnosis was made at the University of Tokyo Hospital, where the 91-year-old had been hospitalised until July 18 for tests ahead of a new medication regimen to treat existing heart conditions. The former emperor's newly prescribed medication is also effective in treating symptoms of supraventricular tachycardia, according to his aides. The agency said it will continue to monitor his condition. The former emperor was admitted to the hospital on July 14 , where doctors aimed to carefully adjust the dosage of his new medication while monitoring his heart with an electrocardiogram. He was discharged on July 18 and left the hospital by car, accompanied by his wife, former empress Michiko, who had been visiting him daily. The former emperor was diagnosed in May with myocardial ischaemia – reduced blood flow to the heart muscle – after undergoing tests at the same hospital. He has since been under medication and observation for the condition. He has also been taking medication and following fluid intake restrictions since being diagnosed with heart failure in 2022. Japan's former Emperor Akihito hospitalized to get new treatment for heart condition
TOKYO (AP) — Japan's 91-year-old former Emperor Akihito was hospitalized Monday to adjust his heart medication, palace officials said. Akihito was diagnosed in May with myocardial ischemia, an asymptomatic heart condition of reduced blood flow from the coronary arteries to the heart muscle. He has since been on medication to improve blood flow to his heart while avoiding excessive exercise and reducing liquid intake. Akihito abdicated in 2019, handing over the Chrysanthemum Throne to his son, current Emperor Naruhito and now holds the title of Emperor Emeritus. After two months on the medication, doctors found little improvement in Akinito's condition and decided to give him an additional treatment to alleviate the burden on his heart, the Imperial Household Agency said. Monday's hospitalization was to carefully determine the right dose of the new medication to avoid side effects, while monitoring his heart by electrocardiogram and other examination, the IHA said. In 2012, Akihito underwent a coronary artery bypass surgery. Three years ago, he was diagnosed with right heart failure caused by tricuspid valve insufficiency. Akihito was seen in the back seat of a palace car, wearing a white surgical mask and accompanied by his wife, Empress Emerita Michiko, as he was taken to the hospital. Palace officials said they couldn't say how long Akihito would have to be hospitalized.

Japan's Emperor Emeritus hospitalized for heart disease medication
Japan's Emperor Emeritus Akihito has been hospitalized in Tokyo for adjustment of medicine to treat his heart disease. The 91-year-old Emperor Emeritus and Empress Emerita Michiko left their residence at the Akasaka Estate by car on Monday afternoon. They arrived at the University of Tokyo Hospital in Bunkyo Ward around 3:30 p.m. The former Emperor underwent a coronary bypass operation in 2012 when he was 78 years old, after being diagnosed with angina. He was diagnosed with right heart failure in 2022. At a heart examination in May, he did not feel chest pain or other symptoms, but was diagnosed with asymptomatic myocardial ischemia. The condition occurs when blood flow from the coronary arteries to the heart muscle is insufficient. This is caused when exercise stress exceeds certain levels. The Imperial Household Agency said the Emperor Emeritus had restricted fluid intake and avoided excessive exercise stress. It said he began taking new medicine to improve coronary blood flow after the recent examination, taking into consideration that hardening of his arteries is advancing due to aging. The agency said that as his condition has not improved, he will now take another medicine designed to ease strain on the heart. The Emperor Emeritus was admitted to hospital so that doctors can adjust the amount of the new medicine. They say they will keep checking electrocardiographic and other data to be able to quickly respond to any side effects of the medicine, such as irregular heartbeat.

Emperor emeritus diagnosed with silent myocardial ischemia
Emperor Emeritus Akihito has been diagnosed with silent myocardial ischemia, an asymptomatic condition where blood flow from the coronary arteries to the heart muscle is reduced due to excessive exercise, the Imperial Household Agency said Saturday. The 91-year-old former emperor returned to the Sento Imperial Residence in Tokyo on Saturday after five days of hospitalization at the University of Tokyo Hospital, where he underwent examinations including an electrocardiogram, X-rays, an echocardiogram and a coronary CT scan. He will receive new drug treatment while avoiding excessive exercise. Doctors will need to observe his condition with extra caution. He is expected to continue his research on goby fish. In 2012, then-Emperor Akihito underwent coronary artery bypass surgery. In 2022, he was diagnosed with right-sided heart failure. The latest examination revealed that his arteriosclerosis was progressing and his blood flow was deteriorating. Empress Emerita Michiko, 90, visited the emperor emeritus every day since he was hospitalized on Tuesday. The couple expressed gratitude to hospital staff, according to the agency.
