MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)—While applying for college can be stressful, Midland College is aiming to make it easier by offering several resources for first-generation college students. Midland College's multi-faceted approach includes: First Gen Advising InitiativeSpecialized academic advising and coaching for students who opt in via the new student survey or contacting your Academic Advisor. First Gen Student OrganizationEstablished in October 2024, this student-led club fosters community and engagement through peer mentorship. Ambassador ProgramA scholarship program which encourages personal leadership and community involvement. Ambassadors serve the community through volunteerism and service while earning a $1,000.00 scholarship each long semester (fall/spring). First Gen CTE Childcare InitiativeGrant funded childcare stipend available to full-time Midland College students enrolled in CTE majors. First Gen ChampionsA volunteer faculty/staff mentoring program supporting student success. Midland College is hosting two upcoming information sessions designed to support individuals who will be the first in their families to attend college. These sessions are open to the community and intended to provide clear, helpful guidance for those who may be unsure about how to take the next step toward higher education. Midland's Walt Williams wins NJCAA Division 1 National Coach of the Year Award

NORMAN, Oklahoma (KMID/KPEJ) – Midland College golf head coach Walt Williams has won the 2025 Dave Williams National Coach of the Year Award presented by Golf Pride Grips. Williams had the Chaps ranked at No. 1 for most of the season as he led them to five team victories, six runner-ups, and three other top-three finishes in his eighth season in Midland. In those wins, Midland won its fifth national championship, the NJCAA Region 5 Championship, and the TankLogix & Tall City Exploration Collegiate. The Chaparrals competed in three tournaments, each hosted by NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II programs, and were led on the course by PING All-Americans Harrison Sewell, Scott Spark, and Bryce Womack. This is the fourth time Walt Williams has won the NJCAA Division I Dave Williams National Coach of the Year in the last six years. He also received the same award in 2019, 2020, and 2022. Former MC head coach Grant McCasland gets extension with Texas Tech through 2030-31

LUBBOCK, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – The former Midland College men's basketball coach Grant McCasland has agreed to a 6-year extension with Texas Tech. The Irving native just finished his second season with the Red Raiders, surpassing 50 wins with a record of 51-20, leading the team to back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament. McCasland served as the head coach at Midland College from 2004-2010, taking his teams to two NJCAA championship games and winning the coveted national title in 2007. The new contract with Tech makes McCasland one of the highest-paid college basketball coaches in the country. According to a Texas Tech spokesperson, the contract totals $31.5 million through the end of the 2030-31 season, with the head coach scheduled to make $5 million in 2025-26 and increasing by $100,000 each year. 'Coach McCasland immediately built upon our men's basketball program's established success and continues working to raise and deliver on high expectations,' Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. 'We look forward to an exciting future for Texas Tech basketball under Coach McCasland's leadership.' Grant McCasland is now extended through the 2030-31 season. Watch the video above to hear more. MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – The Midland College men's golf team won the 2025 NJCAA Division 1 Championship at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kansas. The Chaparrals finished in first shooting +6, and in second place was Odessa College, shooting +13. Harrison Sewell led the way for Midland, finishing in third place overall at one under. WC men begin golf nationals

The Weatherford College men's golf team played the first round of the NJCAA Div. I National Tournament Tuesday in Newton, Kansas. The Coyotes, ranked No. 10 in the nation, finished the first round in 12th place at 12-over-par as a team. No. 1 Midland College led the tournament at 4 under. Advertisement WC's Abdo Fakori was in 29th place at 1-under-par, which included an eagle on a par 5 on the 16th hole. Fakori also carded four birdies on the front nine. The three-round tournament is being played at Sand Creek Station Golf Course, a 7,200-yard links-style course located north of Wichita.
