Missing Minn. Teen Found Dead in Landfill Weeks After He Vanished

A Minnesota teenager who was last seen on May 8 has been found dead Human remains found in a landfill over the weekend have been identified as Jordan "Manny" Collins Jr., 16, police announced at a press conference on July 1 Authorities have indicated it's a homicide investigation but have not named any suspectsThe remains of a Minnesota teenager who vanished in May have been found, authorities said, bringing a tragic end to a weeks-long search. Jordan "Manny" Collins Jr., 16, was last seen on May 8 in Columbia Heights, Minn., and reported missing on May 12, Columbia Heights Police Chief Matt Markham said at a press conference on Tuesday, July 1. Over the weekend, investigators found human remains at the Waste Management Landfill in Elk River, Minn., which have now been positively identified as Collins, the chief announced. Markham said authorities have been searching the landfill since June 4. The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of death. 'I think the fact that a four-week search of the landfill illustrates pretty clearly the tenacity of law enforcement in bringing justice," Anoka County Sheriff Sheriff Brad Wise said at the press conference. "This is a complex investigation." Wise said that investigators obtained a "video that showed some evidence that would suggest the body might have made its way into a dumpster and into a garbage truck." Authorities have indicated the matter is being investigated as a homicide, but have not named any suspects. "Well, a dead body wound up in a landfill, so I guess draw your own conclusion, yes," Wise told reporters. Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Collins' mother, Ashley Berry, spoke with KARE 11 before he was confirmed to be dead, telling the news station, "He's a really good kid, and anybody who's crossed paths with him knows that he has an old soul." A GoFundMe campaign created by Berry to help her with basic expenses had raised more than $8,000 as of July 1. "Since that day, my life has been turned upside down," she wrote on the fundraising page. "Every moment of every day has been focused on finding him — talking to authorities, sharing his story, posting flyers, and following every lead possible." Read the original article on People

Bemidji man charged with 3rd-degree murder after woman's overdose death

Jun. 10—BEMIDJI — A 27-year-old Bemidji man has been charged with third-degree murder for allegedly providing methamphetamine to a woman who died from an overdose at the Northland Apartment building in March. According to the criminal complaint, Joel Kise "did without intent to cause death, proximately caused the death of (the victim) by, directly or indirectly, unlawfully selling or delivering or distributing methamphetamine, a schedule I or II controlled substance." The charge was filed after the property manager at the Northland Apartment building, located at 619 America Ave. NW, contacted the Bemidji Police Department on March 28, requesting a welfare check at one of the apartment units after the resident hadn't been seen by staff for several weeks. According to the property manager, security logs showed that the resident last used her key to access the building on March 5, and security footage showed Kise leaving the resident's unit around 7 a.m. on March 5. Law enforcement entered the unit and located the body of the resident. She appeared to have been dead for a few weeks, the complaint said. While searching the unit, law enforcement found two bank deposit receipts from March 4, showing withdrawals of $350 and $200. Law enforcement subsequently located a container with a pipe that contained burnt residue, as well as Narcan, the complaint said. An autopsy report performed by the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office identified the woman's cause of death as methamphetamine toxicity. A Facebook conversation also showed that the woman discussed purchasing methamphetamine from Kise, the complaint said. Due to Kise's suspected involvement in the woman's death, on June 5, law enforcement acquired a post-Mirandized statement from him. In the statement, Kise admitted that he and the woman smoked methamphetamine in her apartment unit on March 4 and 5. He also admitted that he "hooked up" the woman with methamphetamine in the past, and that the last time he sold her methamphetamine was March 4, the complaint said. Kise's previous convictions include felony fifth-degree drug possession, felony domestic assault, felony fourth-degree assault, and several misdemeanor convictions. Kise's initial appearance is scheduled for Monday, June 16, at the Beltrami County Courthouse.

Man fatally shot by police in Coon Rapids identified as 65-year-old

Authorities have identified the man fatally shot by police in Coon Rapids this week as Robert Davis, 65. The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that Davis, of Coon Rapids, died from a single gunshot wound that was fired by a Coon Rapids police officer responding to a domestic incident in the city on Wednesday. The officer who shot him has been identified as Timothy Morin, who has seven years of law enforcement experience. Three others officers at the scene were Steve Minion and Michael Blair, who fired "less lethal launchers," and Emily Giese, who fired a Taser. According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Davis was armed with a folding-utility knife and moving towards Officer Morin when he opened fire. Officers had received a 911 domestic call on the 300 block of 111th Avenue Northwest just after noon, with the caller a woman – Davis's long-term partner – who said that Davis had cut her with a knife and was still inside the home. When the officers arrived, the BCA says the "tried to make verbal contact with Davis from the entryway of the home." The woman victim and another man escaped the home while the officers negotiated with Davis for up to an hour. "He was still armed with the knife while officers continued communicating with him to drop the weapon and told him that he was under arrest," the BCA says. Minion fired the less-lethal rounds at Davis, who moved further into the home. Officers continued to tell him to drop the knife, with Blair then firing a less-lethal round. Per the BCA: "Davis moved toward Officer Morin, who fired his department-issued handgun, striking Davis. Officer Giese deployed her Taser at which point Davis was taken into custody. "Officers provided life-saving care, but Davis later died at the hospital." The injured woman suffered a knife wound to the hand and was treated and released. The officers were wearing body cameras during the incident, which remains under investigation. The findings of the BCA will be then sent to the Anoka County Attorney's Office for review.
