Athletics Jacob Wilson's hand injury less severe than feared, All-Star Game status uncertain

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The news on Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson's injured left hand was much better than feared; however, his status for Tuesday's All-Star Game is uncertain. 'That's the question I can't answer right now,' manager Mark Kotsay said before Wednesday's game against the Atlanta Braves. 'It's day to day. We hope to get him back before that. Today's a day where there's soreness. The positive is that he can put a bat in his hand.' Wilson, the first fan-elected rookie starting All-Star shortstop, was hit on the hand in the first inning of Tuesday night's 10-1 victory over the Braves. X-rays were negative for a broken bone, so the As were relieved that Wilson shouldn't be out of the lineup long. He is batting .335 with nine home runs and 42 RBIs. 'I think we escaped with Jacob yesterday,' Kotsay said. 'Any time someone takes one in the hand, it could've been worse.' Wilson, selected sixth in the 2023 amateur draft, was the leading candidate for AL Rookie of the Year, according to BetMGM Sportsbook, before the injury. Now he's second, one spot ahead of teammate Nick Kurtz. 'It's a big sigh of relief for sure,' Wilson said after the game. 'The anxiety of waiting the 15–20 minutes after it happened. Nothing was broken. It could've been a lot worse, so everything's good.' Also, As utility player Miguel Andujar was removed from the 10-day injured list, and outfielder Colby Thomas was sent to Triple-A Las Vegas. Andujar was hitting .296 with three homers and 20 RBIs at the time of the injury.

Could The Yankees and This Former Young Standout Be Having a Reunion?

Could The Yankees and This Former Young Standout Be Having a Reunion? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Yankees should be active around this year's trade deadline. They still have a lead within the division, but Tampa and Toronto are well within striking distance, not to mention that Detroit and Houston have a leg up in the race for the top playoff seed. Advertisement So, where should the Yankees be looking to upgrade? MLB's Mark Feinsand had an interesting idea, floating the possibility of the Yankees reuniting with a former young standout. Miguel Andújar seemed like he might play in the Bronx for a long time after 2018, when he was a finalist for the Rookie of the Year. He hit 27 home runs, 47 doubles, and had a near-300 batting average, which will keep someone in the lineup despite a lackluster glove at third. He suffered a season-ending shoulder injury early in May 2019, and his Yankees career never recovered. Athletics third baseman Miguel Andujar with the New York Yankees in Ross-Imagn Images Fast forward a few years and Andújar has had success with two small market teams. There, he was able to get the time he probably needed under less scrutiny and intensity. Advertisement With the not-Oakland A's, Andujar has almost reached that 50-game threshold this season and is hitting .296. He could give them plenty of at-bats after coming back from a recent oblique strain, which is not the most severe injury. This would be a buy-low trade with the Yankees knowing what they are getting. The Yankees do not make this trade expecting him to hit behind Aaron Judge and be one of the key contributors. This is shipping off one or two lower-level minor leaguers for a guy who might be able to give you an RBI-double, or two, in the American League Championship Series. The Yankees know the risks with Andujar. He's not great defensively, and he has injury risks. The cost of two lower-level prospects, however, may be worth the possibility of what he brings back. A's place Miguel Andujar and Gunnar Hoglund on the injured list

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The Athletics placed third baseman/outfielder Miguel Andujar and right-hander Gunnar Hoglund on the injured list Monday and recalled outfielder JJ Bleday and right-hander Elvis Alvarado from Triple-A Las Vegas. Andujar was batting .296 with three homers and 20 RBIs this season before being placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained right oblique. Hoglund has a left hip impingement and was placed on the 15-day injured list retroactive to Sunday. He was 1-3 with a 6.40 ERA in six starts before getting hurt. Bleday was on the opening day roster for the A's and was hitting .204 with six homers and 18 RBIs in 47 games when he was optioned to Las Vegas on May 23. He went 10 for 27 with a home run, six RBIs in six games with the Aviators. Alvarado joins the A's for the second time this year. He was recalled for the first time on May 9 and allowed three runs on four hits and two walks in 2 2/3 innings over two appearances. He is 1-1 with six saves and a 4.57 ERA for the Aviators. ___ AP MLB:
