Nationals pitcher Trevor Williams to have surgery for partial UCL tear, out until next season
ST. LOUIS (AP) — National right-hander Trevor Williams said Wednesday night that an MRI exam of his elbow revealed a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament, and he will undergo surgery next week that will keep him out until at least next season. Williams, who re-signed with Washington on a $14 million, two-year deal last winter, has been limited to only 30 starts over the past two seasons because of arm problems. He was 3-10 with a 6.21 ERA in 17 starts this season, his last coming July 2, when he allowed seven runs on nine hits and a walk in just three innings in a loss to Detroit. The 33-year-old Williams only has a partial tear of the ligament, and the hope is an internal brace procedure will be enough to treat the injury. But orthopedist Jeffrey Dugas, who will perform the surgery next Thursday, said Williams could require Tommy John surgery if the ligament is more damaged than the MRI exam showed. Interim manager Miguel Castro filled Williams' rotation spot last weekend with Shinnosuke Ogasawara, who allowed four runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings in his big league debut. White Sox place Lenyn Sosa on 10-day IL with strained hip flexor, recall Elko
CHICAGO — The White Sox placed second baseman Lenyn Sosa on the 10-day injured list because of a strained right hip flexor and recalled first baseman Tim Elko from Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday. Chicago transferred right-hander Miguel Castro to the 60-day IL with a torn patellar tendon in his right knee prior to its game against Detroit. The White Sox also claimed righty Ryan Cusick off waivers from the Tigers and optioned him to Charlotte.

CHICAGO (AP) — The White Sox placed second baseman Lenyn Sosa on the 10-day injured list because of a strained right hip flexor and recalled first baseman Tim Elko from Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday. Chicago transferred right-hander Miguel Castro to the 60-day IL with a torn patellar tendon in his right knee prior to its game against Detroit. The White Sox also claimed righty Ryan Cusick off waivers from the Tigers and optioned him to Charlotte. The 25-year-old Sosa is batting .274 with four homers and 17 RBIs in his fourth season. He said through an interpreter that he was hurt running early in Monday's blowout loss to Detroit and the pain intensified during the game. He did not play in Tuesday's win. Sosa said he expects to return in a week-and-a-half, though manager Will Venable said the team did not have a timetable. Elko, 26, played in 10 games with the White Sox from May 10 to May 22, going 5 for 31 with three homers and five RBIs in his first major league stint. White Sox place INF Lenyn Sosa (hip) on IL
June 4 - The Chicago White Sox placed infielder Lenyn Sosa on the 10-day injured list with a right hip flexor strain. In a corresponding move on Wednesday, the White Sox recalled infielder Tim Elko from Triple-A Charlotte. Sosa, 25, went 0-for-4 in Monday's 13-1 loss to Detroit and did not play in Tuesday's game. He's batting .274 on the season with four home runs and 17 RBIs. He's a career .241 hitter in three-plus seasons, all with the White Sox. Elko, 26, is batting .161 with three homers in 10 games with the White Sox this season. In 39 games at Charlotte, he ranks among International League leaders in slugging (third, .596), OPS (fourth, .984), home runs (fourth, 11) and average (10th, .315), according to the club. The White Sox on Wednesday also claimed minor league right-hander Ryan Cusick off waivers from the Tigers and optioned him to Charlotte. White Sox sign Dan Altavilla, place Miguel Castro on IL
May 30 - The Chicago White Sox agreed to terms with relief pitcher Dan Altavilla on a one-year, $1 million contract ahead of Friday's series opener at Baltimore. The White Sox made room on the 26-man roster by placing fellow right-hander Miguel Castro on the 15-day injured list with a torn patellar tendon in his right knee. Altavilla, 32, was released by the White Sox on May 24 after going 1-1 with a 2.49 ERA in 20 bullpen appearances at Triple-A Charlotte this season. Altavilla is 8-8 with a 4.36 ERA and one save in 124 career games (one start) for the Seattle Mariners (2016-20), San Diego Padres (2020-21) and Kansas City Royals (2024). Castro, 30, sustained the season-ending knee injury during the ninth inning of Wednesday's 9-4 road victory against the New York Mets. Castro has no decisions and a 7.50 ERA in six relief appearances this year. He is 22-28 with a 4.24 ERA and 14 saves in 425 games (four starts) over 11 seasons with seven teams. --Field Level Media
