Calls Mount for Umpire's Firing After Mets' Loss to Yankees

Calls Mount for Umpire's Firing After Mets' Loss to Yankees originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the 2025 season stretches on, more and more examples have sprouted of MLB's umpires making questionable calls which affect the outcome of a game. Advertisement In June, the X account Umpire Auditor reported that umpires missed 4,209 calls including 202 strikeouts. This weekend's Mets-Yankees series was a spectacle in questionable umpiring, though, as Mike Estabrook and John Bacon on Saturday and Sunday did their best to influence the outcome of the game behind the dish. Estabrook's missed strike three call on Jasson Dominguez on Saturday ended up setting up a home run for the slugger. Bacon, however, generated controversy in the ninth inning of Sunday's game which has fans outraged. Estabrook missed 18 calls on Saturday, and Bacon followed that up with a 20-missed-call day of his own. Advertisement Bacon rung up Mets pinch-hitter Luis Torrens, who was the last catcher on the Mets' bench on three highly questionable calls in the ninth, leading to manager Carlos Mendoza's ejection. "The Mets got jobbed on those calls. I don't blame them for being angry. But this ump had Max Fried and Aaron Judge ready to lobby for robo-umps from the first inning on," one fan commented. "He was horrible. Can't believe he has that job. Many pitches in the same location were randomly called either balls or strikes," another wrote. Overall, though, Bacon did post a 92% ball-strike accuracy on the day, 2.5% above his expected accuracy, which seems to not be in line with fan outrage. Advertisement Anger towards umpires seems to spike towards the end of ballgames, and Bacon certainly generated controversy in the ninth inning of the Sunday's final game of this year's Subway Series. Calls Mount for Umpire's Firing After Mets-Red Sox Controversy

The Boston Red Sox are hosting the New York Mets on Tuesday night at Fenway Park. Taking the series opener, Boston improved to 24-25, which ranks second in the AL East standings. Monday's loss dropped New York to 29-19, which saw them fall a half-game back of the Philadelphia Phillies for the NL East's top spot. Facing two-time All-Star starting pitcher Walker Buehler, the Mets were unable to tally a hit in his 2.1 innings of work. Recording just two baserunners, both via walks, New York was fortunate to get to Boston's bullpen early after Buehler was ejected by home-plate umpire Mike Estabrook. Buehler was outraged after a clear strike was called a ball, leading to the ejection of both he and Red Sox manager Alex Cora. Fans believe Estabrook missing that call, and then making two ejections, should get him fired. Advertisement "Yeah this Red Sox Mets umpire needs to fired immediately @MLB," said one fan. "that ump should be fired that's insane," said another. "Mike Estabrook should be fired," claimed one. "This kind of conduct is detrimental to the game." "Soft umps/refs are the WORST thing in sports," said one. "This guy should be fired tomorrow." "Ump should be fired and banned from baseball forever," said another. "The ball was clearly right down the middle," said another. "The ump needs to be fired. I know bad calls happen but not calls like that one." "That home plate umpire needs to be fired immediately," another added. Red Sox starter Walker Buehler, manager Alex Cora ejected after arguing with ump against Mets

BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox pitcher Walker Buehler was ejected in the third inning against the New York Mets on Tuesday night and manager Alex Cora followed him to the clubhouse after heated arguments with umpire Mike Estabrook. Buehler and Estabrook exchanged words after Francisco Lindor, who was hit by a hit, stole second on a pitch Estabrook called a ball, pushing the count on Juan Soto to 2-0. The right-hander's response drew Estabrook from behind the plate, where he held up his hand and indicated Buehler had said enough. Buehler continued and quickly got tossed, prompting Cora to come running from the dugout. Cora shouted in Estabrook's face for a while and first base umpire Laz Diaz eventually stepped in to keep the two apart. Cora made contact with Diaz as he continued to verbally let loose on Estabrook, then finally made his way to the clubhouse to cheers from Boston fans. ___ AP MLB:

Calls Mount for Umpire's Firing After Dreadful Performance in Dodgers Game

Calls Mount for Umpire's Firing After Dreadful Performance in Dodgers Game Professionalism and objectivity be damned, veteran MLB umpire Mike Estabrook may want to gift Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani a free call or two. Ohtani's latest viral home run took most of the attention off Estrabrook following the Dodgers' 8-7 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night. The popular Umpire Auditor X (formerly Twitter) account found that Estabrook missed 21 calls. Advertisement How bad are 21 missed calls over a nine-inning game? 'With a correct call rate of only 86.5%, this was the 5th worst called game of the season,' Umpire Auditor shared. Yikes. It's been an especially rough stretch for home-plate umpires. Both teams' fans and announcers blasted Tony Randazzo during Monday's game between the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies following a missed third-strike call on Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto. Umpire Auditor posted that Bacon missed 17 calls, including 14 against the Orioles, in last Sunday's game between Baltimore and the Toronto Blue Jays. Eight missed calls, all against the Orioles, came in the first three innings. Advertisement Social media users didn't have patience for those two and certainly had no sympathy for Estabrook. 'That first pitch called strike to Michael Toglia should have Mike Estabrook in an unemployment line tomorrow,' one X commenter wrote, referring to an eighth-inning low strike against the Rockies first baseman. 'Mike Estabrook is certainly calling this game,' another added. 'Not well, mind you.' MLB umpire Mike Estabrook in 2024Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images Theoretically, veteran umpires shouldn't have such awful games. Estabrook worked his first MLB game in 2006 and became a full-time umpire in 2014. 'Why are we not using the challenge system yet ?' former Miami Marlins minor-leaguer Zach Moore asked. 'This is unacceptable.' Advertisement Moore isn't alone in wondering why MLB hasn't permanently implemented the ABS. Social media and improved pitch tracking have made it far easier to prove an umpire's strike calls are incorrect. If anything, Estabrook's performance is more reason for Major League Baseball to implement the Automated Ball-Strike system. Umpire Auditor found that Roberto Ortiz called the worst game last season. Ortiz missed an incredible 30 calls during a September game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals. 'If you're a major league should not be this bad,' an X user wrote of Estabrook.
