UNM outlines proposal for medical school expansion
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Officials with the University of New Mexico are proposing a major expansion for the school of medicine. The Executive Vice President of UNM Health Sciences Mike Richards went before state lawmakers, arguing an investment into the medical school is essential to getting more physicians in the state. They worked with the legislature to create a business plan. At that time, $30 million was appropriated for planning and design. 'The main educational building that supports our school of medicine, which is Fitz Hall, is nearing its end of life and has to be replaced so we'll have the appropriate venue to be able to expand and train health care professionals,' said Richards. Now, officials say those plans prove proposals should continue being supported by the state, saying it would allow for expanded education programs and higher student enrollment. 'This doubling of the size of our school of medicine over the next ten years, and doubling of all the health professional programs associated with it, is clearly within our reach and needed by the state of New Mexico,' Richards said. The expansion comes as a nearly 700,000 square foot critical care tower is just a few months away from opening this fall, offering more employment opportunities for medical professionals. 'That sets us on a trajectory where over the next ten years, as we build out that infrastructure, we'll see about a 70% increase in our in-patient care volume,' said Richards. Richards said, while their big focus is on education new providers, the state also needs to work on recruiting and retention. 'Insuring that we have things like the compacts and that our licensure mechanisms are supportive and we create things that attract individuals to want to come and practice,' Richards said. Officials predict the medical school expansion could result in an additional 54 physicians completing school and practicing in the state per year. Kerr County man searches for flood victims after 9 bodies found on his land on the Guadalupe River
Mike Richards lost his cabin on the Guadalupe River to the flood in Kerr County, but he hasn't stopped searching his land for victims, fearing some remain missing as volunteers prepare to leave. "We hang out here and go fishing all the time," said Mike Richards, "My grandson Blue, he knows every inch of this river." Richards worked all his life to have a small cabin on the Guadalupe River, so he could fish with his grandkids. The flood waters on the Fourth of July completely leveled it. But these days, he's not worried about his cabin. "I have worked all my life for this, but it's just a material thing," he said, "I was a police man for quite a few years and I could always drive up to a scene and leave. But here, I got no place to go. It weighs heavy on your heart." Richards says since the flood, he's found the bodies of nine people on his property. "I've never felt my heart beating so heavy. Man, it just, it's terrible, but it feels like my heart weighs 40lbs," he said. He's had volunteers helping him comb over his land, but he's worried. Eventually, they'll have to return to their lives. "I think they may have to go back this week," said Richards, "I really feel in my heart, there's still people on my land." It's something other people who live in Kerr County have been worried about. "Eventually, everybody is going to leave and go back to their normal life and God, what does it look like for us who have to stay?" said Jodi Carpenter, who lives in Kerrville. But Richards is dedicated to leaving no stone unturned and finding every person on his little patch of the Guadalupe. "I just want to lay my head down on my pillow and say I don't think anymore of them are on my land. I owe that as a father, as a grandfather, as a neighbor," he said.

Everton stalwart Seamus Coleman has signed a one-year contract extension with the Merseyside club, setting the stage for his 17th season in the Premier League. Speaking to BBC Merseyside, fan and Unholy Trinity Podcast contributor Mike Richards shared his thoughts on the extension, suggesting that while Coleman may not feature prominently on the pitch this season, his influence within the squad remains significant. "He didn't feature heavily at all last season; he had a few injuries along the way," Richards said. "David Moyes has said how important his role is off the pitch and on it. We know he can still, on his day, put in a decent performance, and if he feels that he can still compete and can still play then who are we to argue?
