Car Deal of the Day: Get EV3-style for less with a Kia Niro EV for £238 per month

285 mile-range; easy to drive Just £237.50 a month Nearly £100 a month cheaper than EV3 The new EV3 may be the Kia that's (rightly) in the spotlight right now, but don't forget the other electric car that has helped Kia to become a leading EV maker – the Niro EV. It may not have the EV3's new factor, but the Niro EV is still an excellent electric family hatchback – especially if you're new to the world of EV motoring. Add in the fact that the Niro costs around £100 less a month on lease than its glitzier sister, and it's a winner in our book. This 36-month agreement has a 5,000-miles-a-year cap, but this can be revised up to 8,000 for an extra £17.16 a month. This deal gets you a Niro EV in 2 spec. It's the lowest of the two-trim line-up, with the higher being – you guessed it – 3. The range has recently been rationalised and you can thank the EV3's arrival for that, probably. Still, 2 gets you 17-inch alloys, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sat-nav, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, and a plethora of safety kit. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below The Niro also gets a 64.8kWh battery pack that's good for a claimed 285 miles. In our testing we've found 250 miles to be the most likely range you can get, which is still pretty good. The interior is well finished and has a design that's very similar to that of its EV6 big brother. It's roomy, too, with plenty of space for a couple of six-footers in the back, while the boot is huge at 475 litres. Fold down the back seats and this rises to nearly 1,400 litres, plus there are plenty of clever storage places such as a handy 'frunk' under the bonnet. Should car makers bother with fake engine noises for EVs?

Is there any point in synthesising engine noises for electric cars? Well, those into their sporty machines would answer in the affirmative. The Ioniq 5 N fake engine noises tell a lot about the relationship between a car's gearing and its speed in an otherwise silent EV. Extra sonic information and feedback while driving in a spirited fashion is useful. It's another way of telling what the car is doing, according to Alistair Crooks from Auto Express. The fake engine sounds and gearshifts do boost driver engagement but no EV yet can convincingly mimic a combustion engine. BMW is following a different path with its HypersonX system for its Neue Klasse models. The firm calls it a 'unique soundscape' but it doesn't attempt to recreate ICE power noises. Evidently the firm is using 'tones from nature' and 'structures from the worlds of art and science'. The mind boggles. However, the German does suggest HypersonX will 'embody the pleasure of driving for which BMW is renowned'. And good on BMW for sidestepping what's involved in replicating the sound of a straight-six through an audio set-up. Besides, an EV isn't an ICE machine so why should it strive to be one? The job will be doubly difficult for Ferrari, given its ICE power machines sound about as good as it gets. It recently filed a patent for 'audio files' that it will use in its inaugural EV, due later this year. Whether or not it tries to replicate 'historical' Ferrari engine and exhaust notes is unclear. However, it has partnered with Bang and Olufsen so there's hope it will do justice to the endeavour. And while we're on the subject of EVs, AutoExpress believes it has found the best of the genre to date. Mike Rutherford reckons the R5 is the most convincing and credible EV yet. High prices, range anxiety and an inadequate charging network have worked to moderate EV uptake. However, in the 15 years they've been on sale, prices have dropped thanks to increasing competition, and range has ballooned. He praises the R5's minimalism, honesty and entertainment value. The International Best Cars of the Year (Best COTY) awards named the R5 as The New Car World Champion 2024/2025. Car designer, Shiro Nakamura, commented 'Although the all-new 5 is designed as a homage to the original version, it [goes] beyond retro design and expresses modernity.' In the UK Renault's R5 kicks off at £23k and has 18-inch alloys. Admittedly, it is a tight on interior space but 'it has on-road presence, proportions and credibility of no other EV in its class'. 'If there is a similarly priced, better-looking, more desirable and classier pure-electric supermini with greater provenance, I'm not aware of its existence', proclaimed Rutherford. He even rated it as 'highly recommended,' primarily because of its design. Also at its price it is 'special as a pure-electric car for the real world'. Here, Renault New Zealand is currently selling commercial vehicles only, Trafic and Master vans.

Fresh protest as celebs back hospital campaign

Protesters have stepped up their campaign to safeguard the future of a hospital, after winning celebrity backing. Hundreds of people staged a demonstration outside Goole and District Hospital earlier, amid speculation that parts of the site could close. Former boxer Barry McGuigan, Genesis musician Mike Rutherford and comedian Jasper Carrott have all recorded messages of support. The Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, said it was assessing ideas and planned to "agree the next steps" with the Integrated Care Board by March. Concerns about the hospital's future were raised in December after staff at the hospital claimed several wards had been earmarked for closure. Sir David Davis, the Goole and Pocklington MP, met officials from the trust earlier as campaigners staged a protest in Woodland Avenue. He said there had been "no resolution" at the meeting and the trust was "not even near a decision". The hospital was the "best performing hospital in the trust" and "massively underutilised", Sir David added. "All of these are very strong reasons not to shrink the hospital, but to enlarge it." Jean Thompson, a retired nurse, is being treated for respiratory problems and left her hospital bed to join the protest. She said it was "very important to keep the community together" and ensure families were able to visit relatives in hospital. Another women who attended the protest described the hospital as "a vital facility" in a community with "an elderly population". A spokesperson for the trust said: "The next steps are likely to include further engagement with staff, patients, the local community and partners and further options analysis over a number of months. "In the meantime services at Goole will remain as they are until any final decisions are made."
