Manny Machado's massive Sunday leads Padres to series split in St. Louis

Just when Mike Shildt and the San Diego Padres needed it most, the best players on the team stepped up in a big way. Following back-to-back days of benches clearing in St. Louis between the Cardinals and Padres, cooler heads prevailed on Sunday. This time, the only fireworks were the bats of the San Diego Padres. The top three hitters in the Padres' lineup accounted for nine hits and scored five runs in the 9-2 win. Manny Machado was the big man on the field, as he had four hits and drove in three runs. Machado had two doubles, both against Michael McGreevy, the Cardinals' rookie starting pitcher. With the four hits, Machado is now hitting .300 on the season, and second in all of the National League, behind Will Smith. Luis Arraez, with his three hits is now up to .291. Despite scoring nine runs, the Padres it just one home run, which came from Xander Bogaerts in the seventh inning. The win for the Padres kept them in the lead for the third and final wildcard in the National League. San Diego is now 57-49. St. Louis fell back to 54-53, and now 3.5 games out of the wildcard spot. Coming off road series losses, Padres, Cardinals open 4-game set

July 24 - The San Diego Padres will be looking to generate more offense and play better defense as they continue their push toward the postseason. They lost two of three games in Miami this week before coming to St. Louis for a four-game series against the Cardinals that starts Thursday night. San Diego scored just seven runs in the series against the Marlins while remaining in the National League's third wild-card slot. "We're playing a lot of games where we don't have a lot of margin for error," Padres manager Mike Shildt said after his team took a 3-2 loss to the Marlins on Wednesday. "We play a lot of clean games, and (Wednesday), we gave away a little too much that cost us." The Padres sit 25th in the majors in runs scored. As such, president of baseball operations A.J. Preller has expressed an interest in acquiring more offense before the trade deadline. "We've got to put ourselves in good position regardless of what happens at the deadline," San Diego third baseman Manny Machado said. "We want to make a postseason run. We want to get deep into the postseason. That fact doesn't change whether we do anything or we don't. We've just got to go out there and play better baseball than we did these last few days." Machado committed a throwing error in each of the two losses at Miami. "It came down to some stupid errors I made that allowed some dumb runs," he said. "Would've been a different story if I played a little better defense. When you're playing games like this, I think it comes down to defense. "That's why we lost. Those stupid errors." The Padres will open the St. Louis series with Yu Darvish on the mound. The right-hander has struggled to an 0-2 record and 6.08 ERA in his three starts since returning to the rotation following an elbow injury that sidelined him for the first half of the season. Darvish has made nine lifetime starts vs. St. Louis, going 2-4 with a 3.20 ERA. San Diego will catch the Cardinals reeling from a 1-5 start after the All-Star break. St. Louis got swept at Arizona, then lost two of three games at Colorado. During the five defeats, the Cardinals were outscored 36-11. St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol was most disappointed with his hitters after his team lost to the Rockies 6-0 on Wednesday afternoon -- Colorado's first shutout win since May 15, 2024. "Our approaches weren't very good," Marmol said. "In my opinion, that's the worst game we've played." The Cardinals' offense has sagged when the team has fallen behind early in games over the past week. "That's part of it," Marmol said. "We've done it a decent amount after the break. It does take it out of you. You have to be able to separate it. That's part of being mentally tough. You've got to separate what's going on on that side of the ball and still take productive at-bats and keep your approach." The Cardinals will open the series with Sonny Gray (9-4, 4.04 ERA), who is coming off an ugly 10-1 loss to the Diamondbacks on Saturday. He allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings in that contest. Gray is 3-0 with a 1.58 ERA in three career starts against the Padres. --Field Level Media

Marlins throw another righty (Sandy Alcantara) at Padres

July 23 - The San Diego Padres' lineup is getting tested in the series against the host Miami Marlins. San Diego prevailed 2-1 in a game started by Miami's Eury Perez on Monday but lost to Edward Cabrera 4-3 on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Padres will face their third straight hard-throwing right-hander as Sandy Alcantara -- the National League's 2022 Cy Young Award winner -- takes the mound. Padres manager Mike Shildt, though, remains confident in his hitters. "I think our approach at the plate can carry us every night," Shildt said on Tuesday. "It's something we've addressed. It's about taking a quality at-bat." Alcantara (4-9, 7.14 ERA) is 2-2 with a 4.04 ERA in six career starts against the Padres, and he pitched poorly in a no-decision at San Diego on May 28. He yielded six runs on seven hits in four innings, walking four and failing to record a strikeout for only the third time in his career. The 29-year-old right-hander has struggled this season after missing last year following elbow surgery. The Marlins are 8-11 when Alcantara starts. In 2022, Miami went 19-13 when he got the ball. As for Miami's bullpen, it has been surprisingly good, led by Anthony Bender (1.91 ERA), Cade Gibson (2.59) and Ronny Henriquez (3.00). Marlins manager Clayton McCullough had praise for Henriquez, who gave up two runs in the ninth inning on Tuesday but held on for his sixth save. "That was great for Ronny," McCullough said of Henriquez, who is in his first year with the Marlins. "We've put him in a variety of situations, and he continues to be a key cog." Miami placed backup outfielder Derek Hill on the injured list on Wednesday due to a sprained left middle finger. He joins a lengthy list of injured Marlins, but the team has been playing solid baseball for more than a month, going 22-12 in the past 34 games. The Padres will look to bounce back on Wednesday behind Dylan Cease (3-9, 4.64 ERA), who is 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA in two career starts against Miami. The right-hander will be starting just two days short of the one-year anniversary of his no-hitter against the Washington Nationals. Cease is coming off a scoreless outing vs. the Nationals on Friday, when he pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up just four hits and no walks while striking out 10. That contest followed a three-start streak in which Cease lost each time and pitched to a 7.31 ERA. He has registered six quality starts in 20 outings this year, but his most recent quality start came on June 21. The Padres are 3-2 on their current 10-game road trip, during which Luis Arraez has rediscovered his stroke. The three-time batting champion, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI single on Tuesday, is 8-for-20 (.400) while hitting safely in all five games on the trip. Arraez had gone 1-for-20 in the final five games before the All-Star break. His average is still just .286, which would be the lowest of his career. --Field Level Media

Padres Make Unexpected Jackson Merrill Decision Before Diamondbacks Game

Padres Make Unexpected Jackson Merrill Decision Before Diamondbacks Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Outfielder Jackson Merrill is entering his second season as a member of the San Diego Padres. The 22-year-old was selected in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Padres and, after debuting last year, quickly established himself as both a star and a foundational building block for the franchise. Advertisement Merrill was drafted as a middle infielder—a role he'd played throughout his amateur and minor-league career—but during spring training, with Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts locking up the left side of the infield, San Diego asked him to learn the outfield. He embraced the challenge and found a way to excel at his new position immediately. During his rookie campaign, Merrill finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting, earned his first All-Star selection, and even placed ninth in MVP voting. His combination of defensive versatility and emerging power made him one of the most exciting young talents in baseball. San Diego Padres outfielder Jackson Merrill (3)Kim Klement Neitzel-USA TODAY Sports In his second season, Merrill has not maintained the elite performance levels he reached in 2024. Advertisement Ahead of Thursday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, manager Mike Shildt made the decision to move Merrill down to sixth in the batting order—the lowest spot he has occupied all season. Through 60 games in 2025, Merrill is batting .263 with a .717 OPS, marking a significant drop-off from his breakout year. His power numbers have regressed as well: he has hit only five home runs this season compared to the 29 he smashed in 2024. With the All-Star break approaching, the Padres sit at 49-43, just one game out of a wild-card spot. For San Diego to maintain its postseason push, a big rebound in the second half from Merrill will be essential.
