Golf Fans Aren't Pleased With Mike Tirico's Performance At The Open
Golf Fans Aren't Pleased With Mike Tirico's Performance At The Open originally appeared on The Spun. Mike Tirico has been considered one of the best broadcasters in sports for countless years, but golf fans aren't exactly fond of his performance at Royal Portrush. Tirico, a five-time Sports Emmy Award winner, is best known for his work as the voice of "Sunday Night Football." That being said, NBC utilizes him for the Olympics, horse racing's Triple Crown, and the U.S. Open among other sporting events. Even though NBC has leaned on Dan Hicks and Kevin Kisner for its coverage of the 153rd Open Championship, Tirico has been featured on Friday's broadcast. So far, the early reactions on social media haven't been kind. "Less Mike Tirico more golf," one fan declared. "I know the expectations are incredibly low but it really is ridiculous how little golf NBC shows its audience," a second fan wrote on X. "Recaps and long Mike Tirico intros, then have to show delayed stuff that could have been shown live because of said recaps/Tirico. A vicious cycle indeed." "Dan Hicks is bad and Tirico is terrible," a third fan commented. "Mike Tirico is annoying me with all this talk of a country that doesn't exist (Northern Ireland). I wish he would shut up and let Pauly McGinley take the reins and refer to the North of Ireland correctly," another fan said. The third round of the Open Championship will be televised on NBC from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday. There'll also be featured groups on Peacock in the early morning. Fans should expect to hear more of Tirico's commentary this weekend. As of this writing, Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick are at the top of the Fans Aren't Pleased With Mike Tirico's Performance At The Open first appeared on The Spun on Jul 18, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 18, 2025, where it first appeared.

British Open: A bat invaded the NBC broadcast booth, hilariously sending Kevin Kisner and Dan Hicks into a panic
Kevin Kisner didn't hesitate to take cover on Friday afternoon inside the NBC broadcast booth. The PGA Tour star and "proud hunter" wanted absolutely nothing to do with an errant bat that found its way into their tower during the second round of the British Open on Friday at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Kisner dove down under the table and whipped his jacket over his head in an apparent effort to just wait out the invasion. Kisner's broadcast partner, Dan Hicks, wasn't much help either. He just started waving his hands around frantically. Thankfully, Mike Tirico was there to describe the entire scene. "I'm telling you Mike ... just when you think you've seen it all," Hicks said after things had settled, adding that the bat did 20 laps around the tower they were sitting in. "I saw the feet up looking to land, I was ducking out," Kisner added. Honestly, it's hard to blame him. Kisner is on the call this week as part of his role as NBC's lead golf analyst, which he does while still competing on the PGA Tour. The four-time winner finished T8 at the ISCO Championship earlier this month, which actually marked his first made cut after missing nine straight and only his second of the season. While the duo aren't even to the midway point of the tournament, a bat making its way into the booth is about the last thing you'd expect while covering a major championship. Hopefully, the rest of the weekend is easier on them.

NBC blames headset for Smylie Kaufman's NSFW hot mic at The Open
The NBC broadcast team providing coverage of the 153rd Open Championship is having quite a Friday at Royal Portrush. First it was a wild bat invading the booth that sent Dan Hicks and Kevin Kisner ducking for cover. Then on-course reporter Smylie Kaufman apparently experienced some technical difficulties which led to him dropping an expletive on an unexpectedly hot mic. Give Kaufman a little bit of credit, though, he did utter the curse word in a hushed tone. Golf is nothing if not obsessed with etiquette, after all. Still many people watching the broadcast picked up on the error immediately. Warning: NSFW Language NBC's Mike Tirico came on the air a short while later to explain what happened. 'Earlier we had some technical issues with our microphones," Tirico said. "When you come over here, our on-course reporter, sometimes the headsets don't work the same way they do back home. Because of that, it led to some language getting through on the air that shouldn't have gotten through. So we just want take the time to apologize for that comment getting through back home.' The more you know, indeed. This article originally appeared on For The Win: NBC blames headset for Smylie Kaufman's NSFW hot mic at The Open

The Open joins the U.S. Open in keeping prize money the same, year over year
Mike Tirico takes you through the front nine of Royal Portrush, 2025 site of The Open Championship, the final men's major of the golf season. PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland — The Open is leaving the total prize money at $17 million, the first time since 2012 the R&A has chosen not to increase the purse. The U.S. Open also did not boost its purse this year at Oakmont . The winner this week at Royal Portrush will receive $3.1 million, the same amount Xander Schauffele earned last year at Royal Troon. The four majors had been gradually increasing their prize money in recent years. The Masters increased its prize fund by $1 million to $21 million. The PGA Championship went up $500,000 to $19 million. The U.S. Open left its purse at $21.5 million, still the highest of the four majors. It's an example that the biggest championships are not about prize money, but green jackets and claret jugs. The Players Championship on the PGA Tour has a $25 million purse. PGA Tour signature events and Saudi-funded LIV Golf events have $20 million prize funds.
