Spirit Airlines Is Not Happy With Two Rival U.S. Airlines

Spirit Airlines filed a regulatory complaint this week against two rival airlines, according to media reports. On Tuesday, Spirit formally filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Transportation about the new Blue Sky partnership between JetBlue Airways and United Airlines, alleging that it "raises serious competition and public interest questions" and is a "coordinated oligopoly masquerading as competition." In the 12-page filing, Spirit argues that the agreement between JetBlue and United has the same competitive concerns as the now-defunct Northeast Alliance between American Airlines' and JetBlue, which was discontinued in 2023. Spirit also says it is worried that the partnership will turn JetBlue into 'a de facto vassal of United." "This anti-competitive tie-up involving a dominant legacy carrier will neutralize the competitive benefit of an existing low-fare competitor (JetBlue), will raise fares, and will tend to weaken other value airlines, such as Spirit and others, by siphoning off customers attracted by access to the United loyalty program," Spirit said. Spirit has asked the DOT to extend the review period and to make the details of the BlueSky agreement public and open to scrutiny. Announced back in May, Blue Sky was described by the two airlines as the time as "a new and unique collaboration that gives customers of both airlines even more options to find flights that fit their plans as well as new opportunities to earn and use MileagePlus miles and TrueBlue points across both airlines." The arrangement enables United's MileagePlus customers and JetBlue's TrueBlue members to use and earn points on the other carrier's flights, and also allows for the sales of both airlines' flights on either company's website. Additionally, JetBlue will provide United access to slots at JFK for up to seven daily round-trip flights out of Terminal 6, starting as early as 2027. How Is United Airlines' Stock Performance Compared to Other Jets Stocks?

Chicago, Illinois-based United Airlines Holdings, Inc. (UAL) owns and manages airlines that transports people and cargos serving customers worldwide. With a market cap of $24.3 billion, the company also offers catering, ground handling, flight academy, and maintenance services for third parties. Companies worth $10 billion or more are generally described as 'large-cap stocks,' and UAL perfectly fits that description, with its market cap exceeding this mark, underscoring its size, influence, and dominance within the airlines industry. UAL's extensive route network, strategic hubs, and loyalty program drive its competitive edge in global aviation, facilitating high-volume international and long-haul flights. The hub-and-spoke system boosts efficiency, while its MileagePlus program and partner agreements generate significant ancillary revenue. 2 Outstanding Stocks Under $50 to Buy and Hold Now 3 ETFs with Dividend Yields of 12% or Higher for Your Income Portfolio Nvidia's Bringing Sovereign AI to Germany. Despite its notable strength, UAL slipped 35.9% from its 52-week high of $116, achieved on Jan. 22. Over the past three months, UAL stock has gained 4.2%, outperforming the U.S. Global Jets ETF's (JETS) marginal loss during the same time frame. In the longer term, shares of UAL dipped 23.5% on a YTD basis, underperforming JETS' YTD losses of 14.7%. However, UAL climbed 49.9% over the past 52 weeks, outperforming JETS' 9.7% returns during the same time frame. To confirm the bullish trend, UAL has been trading above its 50-day moving average since early May. However, the stock is trading below its 200-day moving average since late March, with slight fluctuations. UAL has outperformed due to the U.S. government's plans for air traffic control upgrades and its partnership with Archer Aviation Inc. (ACHR). Additionally, UAL is partnering with JetBlue Airways Corporation (JBLU) for increased service at New York's JFK airport, offering benefits such as reciprocal loyalty perks for travelers. On Apr. 15, UAL shares closed up by 2% after reporting its Q1 results. Its adjusted EPS of $0.91 exceeded Wall Street expectations of $0.75. The company's revenue was $13.21 billion, missing Wall Street forecasts of $13.22 billion. In the competitive arena of airlines, Delta Air Lines, Inc. (DAL) has taken the lead over UAL, showing resilience with 21.4% loss on a YTD basis. However, DAL shares lagged behind the stock with a 4.1% downtick over the past 52 weeks. Wall Street analysts are bullish on UAL's prospects. The stock has a consensus 'Strong Buy' rating from the 22 analysts covering it, and the mean price target of $101.41 suggests a potential upside of 36.5% from current price levels. Silver Airways bankruptcy: What can stranded travelers do? Can they get a refund?

It's the traveler's nightmare to be left stranded in an airport and have to scramble to quickly find new accommodations. Getting stranded because the entire airline shut down is a new one, though. Fort Lauderdale-based Silver Airways announced that as of Wednesday, June 11, all flight operations were ceased due to bankruptcy. The company asked ticket-holders not to come to the airport. "We regret to inform you that we are ceasing operations as of today, June 11, 2025," the airline posted on its social media pages. "In an attempt to restructure in bankruptcy, Silver entered into a transaction to sell its assets to another airline holding company, who unfortunately has determined to not continue Silver's flight operations." Silver Airways is a regional airline with a hub in Fort Lauderdale that serviced Key West, Pensacola, Tallahassee and Tampa (it ceased operations at Orlando International Airport in March). It flew about 52 daily flights between 16 destinations in Florida and the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and other Caribbean airports. So, what now? If you've been left hanging for your summer vacation or just need to get home, here are your options. Silver Airways is not refunding tickets. Instead, the airline said that "all credit card purchases should be refundable through your credit card company or your travel agency." Don't expect your money back any time soon. According to Robert W. Mann Jr., a former airline executive officer and current president of R. W. Mann and Co., an independent airline consultancy, tickets not purchased by credit card are still technically refundable, but those would-be passengers will have to get in line with other airline creditors. While you'll probably pay more buying tickets so close to the flight, American Airlines flies from Miami International Airport (MIA) to most of the destinations that Silver served nonstop from Fort Lauderdale, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium. JetBlue offers flights on most of Silver's routes from San Juan, as does Cape Air and Frontier Airlines. "We understand this is a frustrating situation for impacted customers," a JetBlue spokesperson said, according to the Points Guy website. "We are working to support those with codeshare and interline itineraries by offering alternate travel plans or refunds." Avianca, Azul, Copa Airlines, JetBlue and United Airlines have all placed their codes on select Silver flights in Florida and the Caribbean, the Points Guy said. Members of JetBlue's TrueBlue and United's MileagePlus loyalty programs could earn points on Silver flights. Silver Airways was attempting to restructure through Chapter 11 bankruptcy and had entered into a plan to sell assets to another airline holding company, but the potential buyer dropped out and stopped supporting operations or retaining employees, the company said. Silver filed for bankruptcy in December 2024 and put itself up for sale, but there were no bidders, the Miami Herald reported. The former buyer, Wexford Capital, had provided $5.5 million in April to keep Silver in the sky. This article originally appeared on Palm Beach Post: Stranded by Silver Airways? United Airlines' and JetBlue's 'Blue Sky' partnership brings loyal flyers reciprocal benefits

Loyal United Airlines and JetBlue flyers have a lot to look forward to with the two carriers' recently announced "Blue Sky" partnership. The new alliance will give United MileagePlus and JetBlue TrueBlue members reciprocal perks when flying — they'll be able to earn and redeem miles on either airline, enjoy status benefits onboard both and buy flights from either carrier's website. United Airlines, whose major Northeast hub is at Newark Liberty International Airport, will also have space at New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) as early as 2027. While not all of the specifics have been announced yet, here's what we know so far. On May 29, United Airlines and JetBlue announced Blue Sky, a new initiative aimed at providing their frequent flyers with more travel — and credit card rewards earning/redemption — options. The collaboration brings reciprocal benefits to United MileagePlus and JetBlue TrueBlue members, the airlines' loyalty programs, with changes rumored to go into effect as early as this fall. JetBlue has a significant East Coast presence, which means teaming up with United gives its flyers more access across the U.S. Some of United's main hubs include Chicago O'Hare International Airport, Denver International Airport and Houston Intercontinental Airport. United also has a much larger international network that JetBlue flyers can tap into. For United flyers, the alliance with JetBlue opens up their options when flying along the East Coast or to the Caribbean. They can also now add JFK as an alternative for in and out of New York. With the Blue Sky partnership, JetBlue's TrueBlue members will be able to earn and use points for flights across United's global network, including domestic and international flights. United's MileagePlus customers will be provided the same opportunity for "most" JetBlue flights, with further details hopefully coming in the future. The ability to earn and redeem points across airlines is a big perk, especially for travelers who take advantage of transfer partners where available. JetBlue points can be earned by a handful of credit card issuers, with American Express Membership® Rewards, Capital One Miles, Chase Ultimate Rewards® and Citi ThankYou® Rewards all transferring at different ratios. United is a little trickier and only has Chase Ultimate Rewards points and Bilt Rewards Points as transfer partners. This partnership will now likely grant additional ways to indirectly access United's network through transferring points to JetBlue and redeeming via United flights. This could be possible with cards like the American Express® Gold Card or the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, two popular travel cards that you may already have in your wallet. We still need to wait for some more details around pricing and how the exact redemption works, but having more flexibility with your credit card points is always welcome. As part of Blue Sky, United and JetBlue will offer flights on one another's websites and mobile apps so you can book on either seamlessly. Both carriers will continue to publish and market flights independently, not a codeshare, however. United will also shift how it provides hotels, rental cars, cruises and vacation booking via its website and mobile apps, moving to services provided by JetBlue's Paisly platform.
