Is this the most bizarre start to an AFL game EVER? Star leaves fans and experts stunned with an all-time brain explosion
Footy fans were left in disbelief when Saturday night's Adelaide Crows vs Port Power match began with a shocking error right from the first bounce. With a crowd of more than 46,000 packed into Adelaide Oval, Port star Miles Bergman swooped in seconds after play began, grabbed the first clearance of the match - and promptly booted the ball about 50 metres downfield... in the wrong direction. To make matters even worse, his punt fell straight to Crows forward Darcy Fogarty, who marked it and kicked the first goal of what turned out to be a very lopsided win for his side. 'He's kicked it the wrong way!' an incredulous Dwayne Russell said in commentary for Fox Sports. 'He's kicked it straight to - this is hard to believe - Fogarty's going to have a line-up at goal. 'Can you believe that a player would kick the wrong way? How could a professional do that?' The commentary panel weren't the only ones left stunned by Bergman's brain snap. 'That is unforgivable.. what a Wally,' one fan wrote on X. 'I'm a Port fan and this is hilarious to me,' another wrote after seeing the incident on TikTok. Other comments included, 'Great kick! Forwards could not ask for better service', and, 'Getting paid thousands and can't even remember which way he's meant to kick.' After the match, Crows star Jake Soligo showed some compassion for his rival. 'I've had to think about not doing that a couple of times, it is hard,' he told the ABC. 'But it hit Fog [Fogarty] right on the t**.' Once that early moment of madness was out of the way, the Crows' Riley Thilthorpe dominated during his team's record 98-point belting of their arch foe, which lifted Adelaide to the top of the AFL ladder. Thilthorpe booted three goals in a 20.13 (133) to 5.5 (35) victory - the biggest margin in a Showdown - on a sodden Saturday night at Adelaide Oval. The Crows will sleep on top of the ladder, though Collingwood will likely retake pole position on Sunday with a win over Richmond. Adelaide will finish the round no lower than second after logging five consecutive victories for the first time under sixth-year coach Matthew Nicks. 'You dream about performances like that,' Nicks said. The sole blemish on Saturday night was a hamstring injury to Max Michalanney, who was substituted in the third quarter. The 201cm-tall Thilthorpe defied the heavy rain with his influential 19-disposal display featuring six clearances, and veteran Taylor Walker and Ben Keays booted three goals each. Adelaide's Jake Soligo (35 disposals) and Sam Berry (20 touches) scored two goals each. On-baller James Peatling (26, one goal) and captain and 150-gamer Jordan Dawson (21, one goal) were also prominent, while Mark Keane and Josh Worrell ruled in defence. The Power slumped to an 8-11 win-loss record amid more concerns with Lachie Jones substituted because of a corked thigh and Jack Lukosius suffering a calf injury.

AFL world stunned by truly bizarre scenes as Port star Miles Bergman kicks it the wrong way
Port Adelaide star Miles Bergman has made an all-time howler, inexplicably kicking the ball the wrong way off the opening bounce. In a truly bizarre start to Saturday night's showdown between Port Adelaide and Adelaide, the 23-year-old latched onto the loose ball in the opening seconds and hoofed it downfield. The only problem is that he kicked it in the completely wrong direction. To make matters worse, it landed straight into the grateful lap of Adelaide forward Darcy Fogarty. setting him up for an easy shot at goal. 'He's kicked it the wrong way. This is hard to believe,' Dwayne Russell said in Fox Sports commentary. 'I've never seen a professional do that. That is incredible. 'Imagine Neil Armstrong saying, 'Sorry, boys, I think I've gone the wrong way'.' But incredibly, from right in front, the ever-consistent Fogarty then missed the easy chance. 'This just might set the scene for something quite extraordinary. So we've had a 60-metre wrong kick, and then Darcy Fogarty, who never misses, just slides one to the right,' AFL legend Garry Lyon added. Around the ground, the crowd was equally stunned. 'I tell you what, guys, the crowd down here were absolutely stunned as well, not just you guys,' Shaun Burgoyne said. 'But they didn't know what we were actually watching, just then.' While fans were also quick to give it to Bergman online. 'That is unforgivable. What a Wally,' one fan wrote. 'Opening clearance of the Showdown and Miles Bergman delivers a perfect pass … to Darcy Fogarty in Adelaide's forward line. Horror first moment, got completely confused,' another said. While a third wrote: 'You'd think he might pay attention to which way we are going! Sums up our season'.

Showdown crowd stunned as Miles Bergman kicks it wrong way in opening seconds
Port Adelaide star Miles Bergman has gifted Adelaide a shot at goal in a bizarre start to Saturday night's Showdown. Bergman sharked the ball from the opening bounce, but instead of kicking the ball forward, he turned and slammed it 50m the wrong way. Adding to his embarrassment, it landed straight into the lap of Adelaide forward Darcy Fogarty. The crowd and commentators were left stunned by the situation. 'This is hard to believe. Can you believe a player could kick the wrong way? How can a professional do that?' Dwayne Russell said in commentary. 'Imagine Neil Armstrong saying, 'sorry, boys, I think I've gone the wrong way'.' Port Adelaide young gun rejects Victorian suitors
Port Adelaide utility Miles Bergman has rejected offers from Victorian clubs and signed a fresh contract with the Power. Bergman will remain at Port until the end of 2027 under a new deal struck with the in-demand 23-year-old. Geelong, St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs were among clubs pitching to lure Bergman from Alberton. But the Melbourne-born Bergman opted to remain at Power in a contract to take him to free agency status at the end of the 2027 season. "I've loved my time at Port Adelaide since being drafted and the club has continued to give me great opportunities," Bergman said in a statement on Wednesday. "I feel like we can go a long way over the next few years." Bergman's stocks have risen this season with a move into the midfield from his customary defensive role. The 98-gamer has been deployed to play on a series of star on-ball opponents with great success. "Miles' versatility has been on show this year," Port's list manager Justin Cripps said. "He has really elevated his game to the point where he is now recognised as one of the league's most exciting young players." Bergman, who was pick 14 at the 2019 national draft, had been due to fall off-contract at the end of the season.
