PGA Tour Warns of Late Weather Concerns at Rocket Classic on Friday

PGA Tour Warns of Late Weather Concerns at Rocket Classic on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Rocket Classic is heating up literally whether it be the players or the weather. After a thrilling opening round at Detroit Golf Club, the leaderboard is tightly packed. Min Woo Lee's early 9-under 63 looked like it might hold, but Kevin Roy and Aldrich Potgieter stole the show, on the first round of the Classic. Advertisement Chris Kirk and Philip Knowles are the joint players to hold the No.1 spot. Both are at 14-under "It's a bit of a scrum," as one observer noted, with 129 of the 156-player field breaking par. That sets the stage for a wild Friday, if the weather allows. The PGA Tour's weather forecast for Friday, June 27, warns of potentially severe weather in the later stages of the day. The weather is expected to turn with 'strong' thunderstorms likely between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., peaking with a 70% chance of rain and 70% lightning probability by 7 p.m. Winds will also pick up, gusting to 24 mph by afternoon. The heat won't help either. Temperatures are forecasted to hit a high of 90°F, with a heat index of 96°F, making for sweltering conditions out on the course. 'Severe weather is possible between 5–8pm today,' the PGA Tour cautioned, and that could mean disruptions or delays for late tee times. With weather looming and players going low, Friday could turn chaotic. As fans and players eye the skies, the early movers on the leaderboard might just end up with the best deal of the day. Potgieter and Roy share PGA lead in Detroit with course record 62s

South African Aldrich Potgieter acknowledges fans after firing a first-round 62 for a share of the lead at the US PGA Tour Rocket Classic in Michigan (Gregory Shamus) Aldrich Potgieter and Kevin Roy fired course-record 62s at Detroit Golf Club on Thursday to share the first-round lead in the US PGA Tour Rocket Classic. Roy, a 35-year-old American chasing a first PGA Tour title, followed his eagle at the 17th with his eighth birdie of the day to be the first in the clubhouse on 10-under. Advertisement Less than 10 minutes later South Africa's Potgieter put the finishing touches on a round that also included an eagle and eight birdies. Potgieter and Roy both broke the previous course record of 63 -- matched Thursday by Australian Min Woo Lee and Americans Max Greyserman and Mark Hubbard. "Just one of those days everything was clicking," said Roy, who had seven birdies in the first 14 holes then chipped in from off the green for eagle at 17 after his five-wood second shot from the fairway rolled off the putting surface. "I was shocked my five-wood went that far," Roy said. "I had 279 (to) pin. I don't a five-wood that far, but maybe a little adrenaline or something going on. Advertisement "Luckily just trickled off the back, it was a fine lie and just had to kind of plop it up and it rolled in like a two-footer. Certainly a bonus," added Roy, who rolled in a five-footer at the last. That caught the attention of Potgieter, who had teed off on 10 and surged up the leaderboard when he picked up five strokes in a four-hole span, starting with his fourth birdie of the day at 16. He followed that with a 10-foot eagle at 17, a 10-foot birdie at the 18th and a tap-in birdie at the first. He reached 10-under with back-to-back birdies at seven and eight, and was finishing his round at the ninth when he saw Roy's score. Advertisement "I was standing on the last hole and I looked at the leaderboard and saw someone else at 10, so I was real eager to make that putt at the last," said Potgieter, who had a 12-foot birdie attempt but settled for a tap-in par. Long-hitting 20-year-old Potgieter is also seeking a first PGA Tour title, having come close in February only to fall to Brian Campbell in a playoff at the Mexico Open. - 'Gettable' course - Australia's Lee, who claimed his first US tour title at the Houston Open in March, had set an early target. He teed off on 10 and opened birdie-bogey. He made nine birdies the rest of the way, including three in a row to cap his round. Advertisement "Everything was pretty solid," said Lee. "I think the putter was working quite nicely." After the grind of the US Open and the PGA Championship, Lee was pleased to be on a course that was "quite gettable" -- especially after rain earlier this week. "It's quite nice to kind of play from the rough," he said. "Not that I was doing it on purpose, I would rather be on the fairway, but, yeah, it's gettable." Greyserman and Hubbard both played late, Hubbard firing nine birdies without a bogey and Greyserman posting 10 birdies and one bogey to join Lee on nine-under. Andrew Putnam was alone in sixth on 64 with seven players tied on 65. bb/rcw

Kevin Roy and Aldrich Potgieter share opening round lead at Rocket Classic

Australia's Min Woo Lee and the United States pair Mark Hubbard and Max Greyserman sit one shot back while Zach Johnson, a former Masters and Open champion, is among a cluster of players on seven under par. It was a forgettable day for fellow two-time major winner Collin Morikawa, who is seven shots off the pace and bemoaned his short game, including a trio of three-putts on the back nine. He said in quotes on the PGA Tour's website: '(I) putted like a blind man, honestly. 'It's just an uncomfortable feeling, shoving everything and not being able to square up the face. It's tough.'

Major winner Minjee Lee inspires brother Min Woo at Detroit PGA Tour event

Min Woo Lee has lauded his major-winning sister Minjee after returning to form with a first-round 63 at the PGA Tour event in Detroit. Lee had equalled what was the course record at the Detroit Golf Club, making a fantastic start in a bid to lift a second PGA Tour title this year. He finished the day in a three-way tie for third on 9-under-par, one shot off the pace, after American Kevin Roy and South African sensation Aldrich Potgieter both bettered Lee's scores with 10-under 62s. Lee received a surprise pep talk from older sister Minjee following her third major championship success in the Women's PGA in Texas earlier in the week. "Normally, she doesn't check up on me, but it was actually quite nice to get a call from her," Lee said. "I was like, 'Did you butt dial me? What's going on?'. "She's like, 'No, I just wanted to check in'. I was like, 'Oh, OK'. She's awesome. "I think she had a bit of a night on Sunday with a few of her friends. "I think they all had a week off this week, so it's good to see her in a nice mental space and happy on the course. "She was going through a tough patch the last couple of years, so it's nice to see her have her swagger back. "I don't think she learns that much off me. I try to learn off her. She's just a beast when she's playing good." Lee, starting on the back nine, opened with a birdie and a bogey on Friday AEST, before beginning a spectacular run that featured nine birdies over the next 16 holes. His three straight birdies to finish the round left him tied for third with US pair Mark Hubbard and Max Greyserman. Lee has struggled since his victory in the Houston Open in March, missing the cut at both the PGA Championship and US Open. AAP

Aldrich Potgieter, Kevin Roy break course record at Rocket Classic

June 26 - The course record at Detroit Golf Club was threatened, tied and then finally toppled on Thursday at the Rocket Classic. After budding Australian star Min Woo Lee carded a 9-under-par 63 to match the course record, it came down when Aldrich Potgieter of South Africa wrapped up a 10-under 62. Just minutes after Potgieter's round was complete, Kevin Roy also signed for a 62. They carry a one-shot lead in the tournament into Friday. By day's end, the old record looked like child's play, as Mark Hubbard and Max Greyserman also finished up with 63. Potgieter got off to a white-hot start, shooting a 7-under 29 on the back nine with five birdies and an eagle. He added birdies at Nos. 1, 7 and 8 and nearly made it a 61 with another birdie at No. 9 that missed by inches. "I (thought it was going in), I started walking after it," Potgieter said. "But it was a good putt, I'm happy with it. And it was on a crest so I didn't know if it was going to be left or right, so it was just a little unfortunate but I'll take the 62 still." Roy finished his round eagle-birdie to match Potgieter's number. Roy chipped in for eagle from 30 feet at the par-5 17th hole and then stuck his approach at No. 18 to about 5 feet to set up his final birdie. "Just one of those days everything was clicking," Roy said. "Lot of fairways, lot of greens, putter got hot, bonus chip-in on 17 for eagle. It's just when you've got it going, it's a lot of fun to try to keep it going. Yeah, just really happy with it." --Field Level Media
