UAE offers condolences to Sudan over gold mine collapse

UAE has expressed its sincere condolences and solidarity with the families of the victims and the Sudanese people. This comes after the collapse of a gold mine in the Howaid area, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of dozens of people. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its condolences and wishes for a speedy recovery to all those injured. The partial collapse of a traditional gold mine killed 11 miners and wounded seven others in Sudan's northeast, the state mining company said on Sunday. In a statement, the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company (SMRC) said that the collapse occurred in an "artisanal shaft in the Kirsh al-Fil mine" in the remote desert area of Howaid, located between the cities of Atbara and Haiya in Sudan's northeastern Red Sea state. SMRC said it had previously suspended work in the mine and "warned against its continuing activity due to its posing great risk to life".

Among the first-round fixtures drawn by John Barnes and Shay Given were a huge derby and a repeat of a recent play-off final. 1 The Carabao Cup first round draw has been made Credit: PA Chelsterfield will host rivals Mansfield Town at the SMH Group Stadium. The two clubs last faced each other in April 2018, with Mansfield snatching a 1-0 win away from home. The two sides went head-to-head in the 2022-23 Championship play-off final, with Luton earning promotion. Jordan Clark opened the scoring for the Hatters in the 23rd minute before Gustavo Hamer equalised for Coventry after half-time. With the score 1-1 after 120 minutes, penalties were needed and Luton went on to win. Some fans were less than thrilled with the outcome, with one person taking to X to write: "Hahahahaha you honestly can't pretend this isn't rigged." Agnico Eagle CEO sees only one reason to buy a gold stock

Published Jun 23, 2025 • 2 minute read President and ceo of Agnico Eagle Mines Ammar Al-Joundi Photo by Matthew Staver / Photographer: Matthew Staver/Blo The head of one of the world's most valuable gold miners believes there's only one reason to buy a gold mining stock — and too few companies in the industry are offering it to investors. Create Account 'The only reason you want to buy an equity is if it gives you a better return than just buying gold,' Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. Chief Executive Officer Ammar Al-Joundi said in an interview with Bloomberg. Toronto-based Agnico Eagle is one of the few large-cap gold mining stocks to outperform bullion in the last year, rising 84% while gold has added 44%. Agnico has also more than doubled the performance of rivals Barrick Mining Corp. and Newmont Corp. – surpassing both on a market capitalization and a price-to-earnings basis in the process. Meanwhile, a quarter of the stocks in the 56-member VanEck Gold Miners ETF have underperformed the commodity so far this year, even as investors have sought exposure to record-setting gold prices amid tariff-induced economic uncertainty and flaring geopolitical tensions. Indeed, exchange traded funds that track gold mining stocks have seen massive outflows this year, an indication that investors are taking profits in the stocks rather than seeing long-term value in the sector. Al-Joundi said the industry's less-than-gilded reputation with investors stems from overspending their cash flows, embarking on 'dumb deals' and generally making poor decisions in periods of elevated commodity prices. He noted that global mining companies wrote down nearly $50 billion in assets since 2013. 'If some of us are blowing our brains out, they look at us and say, 'That's a crappy industry, I'm not even going to look at it,'' Al-Joundi said of generalist investors. The gold-mining sector 'hasn't been a long-term creator of value,' according to Greg Taylor, chief investment officer at Penderfund Capital Management Ltd. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Taylor said that generalist investors currently prefer to buy and hold either physical gold or precious metals royalty companies, like Franco-Nevada Corp., to gain exposure to gold and silver. The miners, he said, are viewed as stocks to trade in and out of cyclically rather than as long-term holdings. Agnico Eagle is one of the gold mining stocks that has been able shake the broader industry's reputation, according to Taylor, but industry-wide valuations will appreciate if more companies can also learn not to overspend when gold prices are flirting with all-time highs. 'This cycle, so far, has been a little bit more encouraging because you haven't seen anything too offside, just yet,' Taylor said. To be sure, Al-Joundi said that while his stock has benefited, he wants all the major gold miners to keep a tighter lid on their spending, to avoid diluting their shares with poorly timed acquisitions because it will lead to higher valuations across the sector. He said it will also help Agnico Eagle trade at an even higher multiple. Agnico Eagle shares currently trade at 25 times their earnings — twice as rich as the 14-times-earnings multiple of Newmont and 9-times-earnings valuation for Barrick. Even if investors continue to treat gold — rather than the miners — as a long-term value holding, Al-Joundi said that's a positive for his company. 'I would encourage people to buy the hard asset because, at the end of the day, that's good for us as well.' Toronto & GTA Toronto Maple Leafs Sunshine Girls MLB Sunshine Girls

I practice what I preach – Jack Farrimond teaching value of pushing to the end

Less than 24 hours later the 19-year-old half-back was pouncing with time up on the stadium clock to score a dramatic second try and seal a comeback win for Wigan in their Betfred Super League clash with Huddersfield at Dewsbury. His rapidly rising stature in the game has not stopped Farrimond, the latest product to roll off the Warriors' seemingly never-ending production line, from popping back to help out at his old junior club where his father Tom is the long-time head coach. 'We're working quite hard at the Miners at the minute about everyone staying alive and pushing into the final moments, so it was great to get to practice what I preach,' Farrimond told the PA news agency. 'It was even better on Sunday morning for the under-11s who had seen the theory being put into practice. 'To them, though, I'm still not really anyone special. I'm just the same 'Big Jack' they've known since they were six or seven years old. For me it's all about staying humble and giving back to the place where I started.' Friday night coaches an u11's session about staying in the game and being an tea time match winner on 79:59 😮‍💨 — tom farrimond (@tomfarrimond) June 14, 2025 Scouted from the well-respected Miners youth system at an early age, Leigh-born Farrimond found himself fast-tracked to first-team stardom after spending just a year in Wigan's academy set-up. But the win at Dewsbury represented only his third start of the current season, due to a minor injury to Bevan French, and Farrimond knows he will have to wait for further opportunities with French and half-back partner Harry Smith a difficult duo to dislodge. With French set to return to the starting line-up for Friday's trip to Wakefield, finding Farrimond suitable game time to maintain his impressive trajectory is a problem Wigan head coach and long-time admirer Matt Peet is wrestling with. 'I don't want him to be too patient, though,' said Peet, who believes there is no reason why Farrimond, whom he remembers scouting as a junior, should not aspire towards dislodging some of the biggest names in the game. 'If he can be better than Harry or Bevan, then he can play more. It's not about being patient, it's about working hard and making it a competition, not just waiting to get a game. 'Respectfully, it's Wigan Warriors, and we're not going to lower our standards so younger players can get a game. I wouldn't expect it to happen imminently, but that shouldn't be his attitude. His attitude should be to compete and learn, and take every opportunity he gets.' Relatively diminutive for a top-level half-back at around 5ft 8ins, Farrimond, who became devoted to the idea of making a career out of rugby league from a young age, is no stranger to the type of challenge laid down by his head coach. 'I've always been told that because of my size I had to play the game in different ways, I had to be smarter because when I was younger the other teams would have bigger, stronger lads and I was never going to run over the top of someone,' added Farrimond. 'I'm sure having to learn about the smart, tactical side of the game has helped me, as has learning from Bevan and Harry. 'They are two world-class half-backs and I am not expecting to take one of them out of the team straight away. It's a slow process but they're happy to help me with tips and it's important that I remember to stay grounded and keep working hard.'
