Balthazar owner Keith McNally among NYC millionaires backing socialist Zohran Mamdani for mayor
Balthazar owner Keith McNally — whose SoHo hotspot has been a magnet for A-listers and one-percenters for years — is throwing his support behind marxist New York City mayor candidate Zohran Mamdani. McNally — who owns more than a dozen eateries in Manhattan including Minetta Tavern, Pastis and Morandi — called the democratic socialist 'fantastic' on Instagram, adding: 'More so, when my affluent, paranoid friends tell me Mamdani's dangerous.' 6 Zohran Mamdani is the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor. Mamdani became the front-runner to lead the nation's center of capitalism by shocking former Gov. Andrew Cuomo to win the Democratic primary for mayor last month. His policy proposals include free public buses, a freeze on regulated rents, universal childcare starting at six weeks old and a pilot program for city-run grocery stores. James Hueston, a 27-year-old venture capitalist, is part of a group of younger, upwardly mobile professionals, many in finance, who are backing Mamdani's campaign. 'In my eyes, I should absolutely be paying my fair share for the people that need it,' Hueston told the Journal, adding that his views don't represent those of his employer. Bradley Tusk, a venture capitalist who ran Michael Bloomberg's third campaign for mayor, wrote on LinkedIn that New Yorkers should 'do what we can to help him succeed.' These unusual alliances may stem from a belief that Mamdani's proposals are either politically constrained or morally necessary. Some backers assume that Albany's control over taxation will prevent the most aggressive parts of his agenda from being enacted. Others argue that his focus on small businesses, transit equity and public health infrastructure could improve quality of life across the city. 'His qualifying comments have identified the capitalist system as promoting income inequality. A lot of people in business agree with him on that,' said Kathy Wylde, president of the Partnership for New York City, a major business group. Social media star Salt Hank's sandwich shop is great — not a gimmick
French dip is having its day. The roast beef-and-jus sandwich, long an also-ran to pastrami-on-rye, is now the toast of places from Minetta Tavern and Anton's in Manhattan to Brennan & Carr in Sheepshead Bay. It's long been a menu favorite at beloved chain Hillstone. The buzziest of all is just-opened Salt Hank's at 280 Bleecker St., the first-ever eatery from social media sensation and cookbook writer Henry Laporte, who has 2.6 million follows on TikTok and 1.6 million on Instagram as @salt_hank. Laporte's head chef, Daniel Rubenfeld, is an alum of Thomas Keller's chophouse TAK Room. It shows in how the prime rib, from meat maestro Pat La Frieda, is carefully sliced and shredded to tongue-tingling perfection. 5 Social media star Henry Laporte has opened a sandwich shop dedicated to the French Dip. Tamara Beckwith The 10-inch-long baguettes are delivered fresh every morning from crazy-popular nearby bistro Frenchette. Those credentials, and Laporte social media following, wouldn't mean a thing if Salt Hank's French dip wasn't so good. It's the only thing on the menu — no burgers or other sandwiches — save for remarkably crisp, matchstick-thin fries ($6), house-made limemade with just-right sweetness and a few canned sodas. The $28 French dip is big enough to food two people with big appetites. It delivers miraculous mouth feel along with rich, multi-tiered flavor. The fine-cut beef is dipped in jus before being layered with provolone cheese, caramelized onions and an aioli flavored with horseradish, chives and roasted garlic. It emerges from the oven warm, moist and begging to be devoured. Some customers use their hands only, but I preferred a fork to pick through layers of crunchy crust, fluffy sourdough, and yummy tangles of shredded beef and melted cheese. 5 Daniel Rubenfield (left) is the head chef at Salt Hank's, while Laporte works the line. Tamara Beckwith The jus itself was a rich, complex revelation — I could almost have it as a soup all by itself. It's generously served in a large cup, unlike some other spots where you barely get any. T The restaurant is a plain, comfortable room with formica-top tables, a counter with a half-dozen seats and pictures of Laporte's book, Salt Hank: A Five Napkin Situation. Customers line up at a kitchen counter and wait for friendly staff to bring them their orders, while grooving to a soundtrack that hops from Notorious B.I.G. to Cardi B. Laporte himself works on the line, putting the finishing touches to assemble the sandwich. On my visit, he was wearing a cap that said, 'Lo Siento' – Spanish for 'I'm sorry.' 5 The French Dip is the only thing on the menu, save for French fries and a few beverages. While Salt Hank's purports to stay open until 5 p.m., they usually run out of beef by 3 p.m. Get there early — and hungry.

‘I Wasn't Harsh Enough': Restaurateur Keith McNally on His Confessional New Memoir
Balthazar, Pastis, Minetta Tavern, and Morandi are just some of the transformative, wildly successful and famous Manhattan restaurants Keith McNally has opened and run for decades. Each room imparts a promise of louche, sophisticated cool along with a memorable and delicious meal. 'The Restaurateur Who Invented Downtown' the New York Times once called him, a blurb that resides on the cover of McNally's brilliant new memoir, I Regret Almost Everything. The book is a must-read for anyone who cares about the restaurant scene of the last 40 years — or just wants to hear a worldy raconteur tell the story of an epic life, full of feuds and ups and downs, with brutal candor. Fittingly, McNally admits to hating the word restaurateur, among quite a few other things he loathes. In his unsparing recollection, he confesses to many dislikes: exclamation points, award ceremonies, any aphorisms that come with self-help, online mobs ignoring things like due process, especially in the case of Woody Allen — part of the joy of the book is reading about his various vendettas and the origins of his excellent taste in food, art, film and theater, all relayed with his acerbic voice and natural gift for storytelling. Keeping with that maxim, McNally begins with his suicide attempt in 2018 on the heels of a debilitating stroke. Then he takes the reader through the story of an underdog made good, with all the chip and insecurity that come from humble beginnings. He vividly traces his poor, working-class childhood in postwar London, early success as an actor on stage in London, and a pilgrimage on the Hippie Trail to Afghanistan. He finally lands in the shabby boho downtown of New York in the late Seventies. He gets into the restaurant business at the bottom, starting as an oyster shucker before moving to the front of the house. His unlikely run of success began with the opening of the classic bistro Odeon in New York in the 1980s and a string of hot restaurants followed, until they didn't. Along the way, there's friendships with public intellectuals like Oliver Sacks and Christopher Hitchens, actor and director Jonathan Miller, Conde Nast doyenne Anna Wintour, and many more. To reveal anything else would be unfair to any future reader. Rolling Stone corresponded with McNally recently to ask him a few questions about his life and times. (Talking remains difficult for him post-stroke.) In many ways the book is a love letter to New York. Do you miss the grittier city of yore?New York thrives on change. Nothing ages a man more than longing for the past. You write a lot about the pain of growing up working class in England. Do you worry about the class system seeping into New York and America? It was a lot more fun and easier to be broke in downtown NYC in the Seventies than it is today, for example. I'd never say that downtown New York was more fun in the Seventies than today. Whether it's currently Greenpoint, Brooklyn, or Ridgewood, Queens, every generation has its equivalent of Seventies downtown New York. Have you witnessed America becoming a more calcified class system? The fact that America's three richest men, Musk, Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg were so eager to attend Trump's inauguration doesn't bode well for this country. You wandered down the famous Hippie Trail from Europe all the way to Afghanistan. Such a trip would be unimaginable, expensive, and dangerous today. What have we lost, with the passing of that freewheeling Bohemian youth culture?The impetus to travel overland to Afghanistan at 19 came from a need — for want of a better phrase — to discover something within myself, not to discover Afghanistan. Nowadays, it would perhaps be too dangerous to travel overland alone from London to Kathmandu as I did in 1970. But if you're young and in need of spiritual guidance — as I was at the time — the country you travel to isn't important. It's spending time alone and putting effort into reflection that makes the journey worthwhile. I loved your many rants, especially about exclamation points and emojis. Do your children agree with you?I can't tell. Although I've received texts from them with the occasional exclamation point, I can't remember receiving a text from any of them with an emoji. That would bother me more than if they came bottom of the class. I was eating at a fancy restaurant the other day and some influencer ladies were taking pictures of their food with their phones, using a handheld light to enhance the images. I wanted to snatch their phones and scream at them but didn't. What is the appropriate response by restaurant staff and patrons to such behavior?To take a hammer to the phone and to smash it into tiny particles. And then do the same to the guest. One of the more depressing scenes in a restaurant is seeing a couple on a date both staring at their phones and not engaging with each other. What do you think your friend Oliver Sacks would have made of this sort of thing? Being the most compassionate man imaginable, Oliver would probably have paid for their dinner. You were friends with the author and famous contrarian Christopher Hitchens. What do you think he'd make of this political moment? Hitchens, who was an avid supporter of Palestinian rights — as I most certainly am — would have hated Trump and Douglas Murray, the British neoconservative political commentator, with equal measure. By the way, supporting Palestinian rights doesn't mean I support Hamas — far from it — or that I'm antisemetic. I worked the land in Israel for a year of my life, I'm part Jewish, and a whole slew of my friends are kibbutzniks. I care about Palestinian rights in the same way I care about Irish rights or Israeli rights. What's the best advice you ever received and who gave it and when?Never believe anything until it's been officially denied. I forget who said it, but it becomes truer every day. Given the title of your book, how does one live with regret? The same way one lives with imperfections. To live is to make mistakes. To be conscious of one's regrets is proof of having lived an examined life. You are an incredibly hard critic of yourself in these pages. Was that difficult to put on paper? Not after my suicide attempt. Were you being too harsh?Not harsh enough, to be honest. You write beautifully about bicycling trips that seem to have been a fun escape and release of pressure for you in middle age. LeBron James has talked about being poor and the freedom a bike allowed him. The reason why I never had a bicycle before I left home was because my mother wouldn't allow it. Because my mother had forbidden it, I was always desperate to ride a bike. I learned to ride one at eight or nine and from my twenties onwards bicycles symbolized absolute freedom like nothing else. What advice would you give the younger you? Never take advice from anyone who seems pleased to give it. What skill from working in theater helped you in running a restaurant most? Lighting for sure. The front of the house and the kitchen crew are often at odds. What's the best way to diffuse conflict?The best way to diffuse it is to hire people who listen to reason. Who understands that — to quote John Donne — 'no man is an island, entire of itself.' I have eaten at many of your restaurants, many times, and never had a bad experience. In fact, I'm always struck by the consistency at all of the McNally joints. What's the trick to keeping standards so high?I'm happy to hear you've never had a bad experience at one of my places, but I don't believe that's true for most people. Running my restaurant is getting the balance right between three things: standard, consistency, and volume. Having consistently high standards isn't so hard when you're doing 30 covers a night, but it's much harder when you're doing 500 covers. The restaurant scene in New York of the 1970s and 1980s was rife with cocaine and alcohol abuse. Yet, in your book, it doesn't really get much of a mention. How did you avoid that pitfall of the industry? Because I've never taken a single recreational drug since one disastrous attempt to smoke marijuana in 1970, I'm not really familiar with the drug scene. Not even one under my nose, if you'll excuse my unintended pun. This book is wildly entertaining and filled with hard-won lessons. And writing seems in some ways to have helped save your life. So, what are you planning to write next? Probably my obituary. What would you order for a last meal?Pasta con le sarde. Mother of murdered son in gay bar slayings finds long-awaited peace in sentencing
A mother finally rests Umberger, a former political consultant, moved to New York several weeks before his death for his job at a nonprofit. Although he was relatively new to the city, he quickly developed a list of favorite restaurants he shared with his mom, including Minetta Tavern, the Waverly Inn and Lil' Frankies. Clary marked Wednesday's sentencing at one of her son's favorite spots, the French restuarant La Goulue, surrounded by dozens of his friends and family. The restaurant is located across the street from the Upper East Side townhouse where Umberger lived—and were he tragically died. "John was so excited about taking on New York City. And in some ways, ironically with what happened, even though he is not physically here, he took on New York City and he won. It just cost him his life," she added. Clary said that one of the most challenging moments throughout the last three years was watching surveillance footage shown during the trail of her son leaving a Hell Kitchen's gay bar on the night he died. The footage showed Umberger leaving The Q NYC alone in a car and then returning several minutes later for unknown reasons. He was then seen departing the front of the bar with the men later found guilty for his murder, Hamilton and DeMaio. "There was something that kept drawing John back to the front of that club. It's almost like you want to jump out of the seat and scream 'stop John! Go back home' and it didn't happen," she said. "Seeing how vulnerable he was and by himself. He seemed quite happy to go off with his new friends." Umberger's friends — a diverse group of men and women spanning several generations — described him as a "connector," someone who can light up a room and befriend any stranger. At Wednesday's hearing, Neil Chatterjee, one of Umberger's friends, reflected on Umberger's friendly nature. "You didn't have to kill him, You didn't even have to rob him. If you needed money, he would have given it to you. He would have hung out with you," he said. "Instead you chose to go down the malicious path and now your lives are forever ruined." Clary returned home to North Carolina later this week. She said she plans to visit New York periodically and volunteer her time to the LGBTQ community in the near future. But for now, she will be spending time with her three other adult children, enjoying her new grandchildren and taking care of her 95 year old father, she said. After three years traveling back and forth to New York, pressing local officials and advocating for her son in the media, Clary also plans to rest. "There is no doubt in my mind that I will be together with John again," Clary said. "God is taking a bad, evil thing that happened and making good out of it," she added.

Book Review: Restauranteur Keith McNally opens up in candid memoir ‘I Regret Almost Everything'
Keith McNally has been charming New York City diners since he opened his first restaurant, The Odeon, in 1980, helping transform a then-derelict TriBeCa into a hotspot for the 'glitterati.' The Odeon's glowing neon sign was featured on the cover of Jay McInerney's 1984 novel 'Bright Lights, Big City,' and the restaurant was a regular hangout for celebrities from Andy Warhol to John Belushi. Nearly five decades and 19 restaurants later, McNally's Balthazar in SoHo, Minetta Tavern in New York and D.C., and other restaurants are still going strong. In his candid, funny and poignant memoir, 'I Regret Almost Everything,' McNally, 73, shows that he is, too. But it might not have been that way. The book opens with a 2018 suicide attempt, sparked by back pain, a crumbling marriage and the aftereffects of a 2016 stroke which left him with aphasia and a paralyzed right hand. Work — building and operating restaurants — helped keep him going. And with his speech distorted, he found a creative outlet in Instagram, where his filter-free screeds on everything — from dealing with his stroke to Balthazar's evening recap by staff — often go viral. 'In some ways, it was only after I lost my voice that I learned to speak my mind,' he writes. In his memoir, McNally charts his unlikely success story from a working-class teen actor raised in Bethnal Green, London, to being dubbed 'The Restaurateur Who Invented Downtown' in his heyday of the 1980s and '90s. His exacting eye for lighting and ambiance and charming touches in his restaurants — he sends a gratis glass of champagne to solo diners at Balthazar, and often filled the 'cheap' $15 carafe of wine at the now-defunct Schiller's with his finest bottles — have turned countless customers into regulars at his establishments.
