Malaysia prepares legal framework for AI governance, says Gobind
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Digital is finalising a comprehensive report on legal frameworks for artificial intelligence (AI) to address governance gaps, Minister Gobind Singh Deo announced today. The findings, currently under review by the National AI Office (NAIO), will determine whether Malaysia introduces new laws or adopts sector-specific standards. Speaking at the launch of CIMB Group Holdings Bhd's *Kita Bagi Jadi Komuniti* campaign, Gobind emphasised AI's cross-sectoral impact, noting that high-risk industries may need legislation, while others could follow guidelines. 'The Cabinet will decide the next steps after evaluating NAIO's study,' he told reporters. The minister highlighted global precedents, where countries balance innovation with oversight through flexible regulations. 'Some areas demand strict legal provisions for accountability, while others thrive with voluntary standards,' he added. The report will classify AI applications by risk level, proposing tailored measures for healthcare, finance, and public services.

Detailed Report On Legal Requirements For Ai Being Prepared
KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Digital is in the process of preparing a detailed report on the legal requirements related to artificial intelligence (AI) to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat. Minister Gobind Singh Deo said that a study on AI has been initiated by the National AI Office (NAIO) and will be submitted to his ministry soon. '(Once NAIO presents the study), we will then bring it to the Cabinet for a decision on the next course of action,' he told reporters after launching the 'Kita Bagi Jadi Komuniti' campaign by CIMB Group Holdings Bhd here today.

Malaysia strengthens Asean collaboration on digital tech and AI
BANGKOK: Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo highlighted the nation's initiatives in advancing responsible artificial intelligence (AI) governance and fostering regional collaboration during the 3rd Unesco Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (GFEAI 2025) on Wednesday. Gobind emphasised Malaysia's commitment to promoting responsible AI governance, encouraging regional partnerships, and ensuring that the country's progress aligns with globally recognised ethical standards. "As AI continues to evolve, meaningful dialogue and international cooperation are essential for building a future that is inclusive, secure, and beneficial to all," he said during the high-level ministerial panel titled Fostering Global Dialogue on AI for a Collective Future at the Unesco GFEAI 2025. Earlier, Gobind participated in a panel discussion titled 'From Readiness Assessment to Enhanced Institutional, Technical and Human Capacities in AI.' During the session, he highlighted Malaysia's achievements, including strengthening nationwide connectivity, adopting a multi-faceted approach to infrastructure, talent, and trust development, and introducing data centre regulations to position Malaysia as a regional hub for data infrastructure. "I am confident that many more commendable milestones lie ahead. That said, I firmly believe that the next phase of advancement must be underpinned by robust and forward-looking policies and regulations. "At the Ministry of Digital, our commitment to driving this agenda remains unwavering. We will continue to strive for a digital future that is inclusive, secure, and sustainable," he said. Later in the day, Gobind held a bilateral meeting with Thailand's Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Prasert Jantararuangtong, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister. Gobind said their discussion centred on opportunities for regional collaboration in digital technology and AI, with a particular focus on transformative applications in the agriculture, health, and transport sectors. "Building on the relationship first established during ADGMIN, we reaffirmed our shared commitment to Asean cooperation in digital technologies and AI. As Malaysia assumes the 2025 Asean Chair, I extended invitations to the upcoming Asean AI Summit in August and the Smart City Expo in September, both of which will be held in Kuala Lumpur," he said. Gobind added that both ministers also addressed the urgent need for joint action on cybersecurity threats in an increasingly AI-driven digital landscape. – BERNAMA

Digital Ministry outlines three key initiatives to strengthen Malaysia's AI ecosystem
JOHOR BAHRU: The Ministry of Digital has outlined three key initiatives aimed at strengthening Malaysia's artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, in a move to position the country as a regional hub for AI innovation by 2030. Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, said these initiatives include the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Roadmap (2016–2030), AI Code of Ethics, and the establishment of a dedicated AI Centre of Excellence. Speaking at the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Festival 2025 (AirFest 2025) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Ugak said the AI Roadmap, originally developed under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, serves as a strategic framework to guide AI adoption and innovation in key economic sectors. 'This roadmap outlines comprehensive policies and strategies to drive economic growth and strengthen national competitiveness. Our goal is to position Malaysia as a leading AI hub in Southeast Asia by 2030,' he said. He said that the AI Code of Ethics will serve as a critical guide to ensure responsible and ethical use of AI technologies, especially in sectors such as healthcare, transportation, agriculture, education, public services and SMEs. Meanwhile, he also said that the third initiative, AI Centre of Excellence, aims to accelerate AI integration nationwide. The centre will focus on refining implementation strategies to maximise the impact of AI on both the economy and society. This festival brings together researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers to explore AI's transformative potential through forums, exhibitions, competitions and training sessions.
