MoECC conducts 10 inspection flights with autogyro aircraft, detects 41 environmental violations in 2025 Q2

Tribune News Network Doha The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) conducted 10 inspection flights using an autogyro aircraft, covering the northern regions of the country In the second quarter of this year. The total flight time reached 12.60 hours. This is part of the ministry's efforts to promote the use of modern technologies in environmental protection and biodiversity conservation. Mohammed Nahar Al Nuaimi, director of the State's External Reserves Office at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, explained that the drone provided its services to the Departments of Wildlife Protection and Wildlife Development, contributing to the monitoring of 41 environmental violations, including 33 violations monitored by the Department of Wildlife Protection and eight violations monitored by the Department of Wildlife Development. He noted that the violations included encroachment on soil and vegetation, misuse of land, random waste disposal, encroachment on meadows, and the establishment of unlicensed facilities, in addition to other illegal environmental practices. Al Nuaimi added that the drone's operation is part of supporting environmental monitoring efforts through the use of modern and advanced technologies, stressing that these technologies contribute to environmental exploration and wildlife development, providing accurate information about the terrestrial and marine environment, as well as coastal monitoring, supporting scientific research, and monitoring plant and animal species. He explained that the aircraft features advanced technology that enables immediate communication between the pilot, environmental inspectors, the Environmental Operations Department, and patrol teams. He said the aircraft is also equipped with high-resolution cameras to document wildlife and marine life, which contributes to monitoring quarry activity, studying vegetation cover, and protecting biodiversity. He pointed out that the aircraft has proven its efficiency in conducting safe flights without difficulties during takeoff or landing. The ministry launched the environmental meteorological monitoring system using an autogyro helicopter in May of last year. The first flight took off from Umm Shakhut Airport in the presence of Minister of Environment and Climate Change His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie. The tour included monitoring several wild areas and beaches. The aircraft is one of the modern technologies the ministry relies on to monitor marine coasts, provide accurate environmental data, support scientific research, monitor biodiversity, identify environmental changes in land areas, and detect violations and quickly address them. This contributes to enhancing environmental sustainability within the framework of the fourth pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030.

36,000 birds hunted since launch of National Project to Combat Myna: MoECC

QNA Doha The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has announced that the National Project to Combat Myna Birds in Qatar has recorded the hunting of approximately 36,000 birds since its launch, reflecting the effectiveness of the measures taken to limit the spread of this invasive species that threatens the ecological balance. In a statement on Wednesday, the ministry explained that hunting operations were carried out in 35 locations using 611 cages, trapping approximately 9,416 birds between January and June 2025, an indication of the escalation of control and environmental monitoring efforts. The ministry emphasised that the Myna is an invasive species that causes significant damage to the local environment by driving local birds from their nests and feeding on their eggs and young. It also has a remarkable ability to reproduce rapidly and colonise urban environments, which increases competition for food, spreads diseases, and poses a threat to biodiversity. The ministry also noted that the bird's native habitat is South Asia, indicating that the problem is not limited to Qatar alone, but rather extends to other Gulf and Arab countries facing the same challenges. It noted that the national campaign to combat the Myna includes programmes for monitoring, surveying, and identifying areas of spread, in addition to trapping campaigns and community awareness of the danger posed by the bird and the importance of reporting its whereabouts. The ministry called on community members to immediately report Myna locations, prevent the bird from providing food sources, cover garbage bins, and reduce nesting sites by blocking openings in buildings, trimming trees, and removing dry branches that could provide suitable shelter. The ministry highlighted the importance of raising awareness among community members as a fundamental step to limiting its spread. It also emphasised the need not tamper with cages and traps placed by specialised teams, and to leave handling of the birds to the relevant authorities to ensure community safety and the effectiveness of control measures.

Camel grazing ban in Qatar to be extended for additional two years starting 24 August 2025

H.E. Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie issued ministerial decision No. 15 of 2025, extending the ban on camel grazing in all regions of the country for an additional two years, starting 24 August 2025. This decision is part of efforts to preserve vegetation cover and biodiversity. In a statement today, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change explained that the decision also includes a two-year ban on sheep and goat grazing, from December 1, 2025 to March 15, 2027, to allow wild plants to grow and regenerate during the rainy seasons. The resolution also allows camel owners to remove their animals from ranches and farms to improve their health, subject to strict regulations and conditions. These regulations require that camels be equipped with identification chips approved by the competent authorities, that their number not exceed 10, and that they wear face masks to prevent them from grazing and cutting down trees. The statement added that the decision emphasizes the requirement for camel owners or caretakers to accompany the camels during grazing. Roaming should be limited to daytime, with a distance of at least 200 meters from meadows, villages, cities, and main roads. Camels should not travel more than one kilometer from the farm site. The decision also prohibits the release of camels within nature reserves, with the exception of the unfenced portion of the Al Reem Reserve. This decision is a continuation of the Ministry's efforts to preserve the Qatari environment, protect the vegetation cover from deterioration, and enhance the sustainability of natural resources for future generations.
