Tax operations declared as "essential services" in Bangladesh

DHAKA, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The Bangladeshi interim government has declared tax operations as "essential services," in a bid to better safeguard local and foreign trade and commerce. Bangladesh's Ministry of Labor and Employment issued a gazette notification in this regard Tuesday. According to the notification, tax operations are declared as essential operations for meeting revenue collection targets of the government and for keeping the financial management of the government dynamics. The Bangladeshi interim government last month through an ordinance created two new divisions by abolishing the country's National Board of Revenue in an apparent move to modernize tax administration and boost revenue collection. The ordinance stated that the Revenue Policy Division will monitor the implementation of tax laws while the Revenue Management Division will mainly look into revenue collection. The restructuring reportedly followed a key condition set by the International Monetary Fund to separate tax policy from administration. The Washington-based lender has long pushed for tax reforms to raise Bangladesh's tax-to-GDP ratio, one of the lowest in Asia.

Migrant worker detained for overstaying visa while reporting W50m in unpaid wages

A Filipino national who sought to file a complaint with authorities to get tens of millions in unpaid wages for factory work here was arrested by police, after it was found that he had overstayed his work visa. Officials at Suwon Jungbu Police Station said Saturday that they are investigating him for violating the Immigration Act, and that he is currently in custody of the immigration authorities under the Ministry of Justice. The man visited the Gyeonggi Provincial office of the Ministry of Labor and Employment on Friday, and filed a complaint for not being paid a total of 50 million won ($35,100) in severance pay and unused annual paid leave by his former employer, operators of the factory he quit from in November. On the way out, he encountered an official from the factory, and got into a fight. The altercation was not substantial enough to constitute an assault charge for either party, but the police officers who arrived on the scene found that the man had overstayed his visa. Regardless of the illegal stay, officials of the Labor Ministry said they will investigate the man's claims and if they are found to be true, provide support for him to be paid the wages he is owed.
