Wimbledon: With Federer Watching, Andreeva Storms Into Quarterfinals

LONDON, ENGLAND - JULY 07: Mirra Andreeva during her match against Emma Navarro of the United ... More States in the fourth round match in the Ladies' Singles Competition on Centre Court during the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club at Wimbledon on July 7th, 2025, in London, England. (Photo by) Russian teen star Mirra Andreeva became the youngest player to reach the women's singles quarterfinals in Wimbledon since 2005, following her 6-2, 6-3 victory over 10th seed Emma Navarro. The 18-year-old, who is yet to drop a set at the grass-court major this year, will face Switzerland's Belinda Bencic in the next round on Wednesday. She is the youngest woman to reach the last eight at Wimbledon since Maria Sharapova in 2005, at the exact same age (18 years and 62 days at the start of the tournament). Seventh seed Andreeva had special guests in the audience – none other than tennis legend and eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer and his wife, Mirka. The youngster admitted she felt nervous playing on Centre Court as the Federers watched from the Royal Box. 'Honestly, it's something crazy. I was super nervous playing on Centre Court for the first time,' Andreeva said in her on-court interview. 'I tried not to look over there, in the box, because I knew that as soon as I looked, I would completely lose my focus. I looked at 4-1 and saw Roger and Mirka." Addressing them directly, she added: 'Honestly, it means a lot to me that you came and watched my match. It's been one of my dreams to see you in real life. "When I saw both of you I got really, really nervous but I'm super happy that I managed to keep focused. Mirka, I just want to say real quick that you look really pretty. I really like your outfit.' A Funny End While Monday's Wimbledon victory was remarkable for Andreeva, who plays with a maturity well beyond her age, the way the contest ended added a touch of humor. Andreeva won the match when Navarro netted a forehand, but the Russian didn't realize it. She turned her back to the baseline, preparing for the next point. It wasn't until the crowd erupted into applause that Andreeva realized the match was over — with Navarro already waiting at the net for a handshake. "Honestly, I just kept telling myself that I'm facing break points. I tried to tell myself that I'm not the one who is up on the score, I'm the one who is down," she recalled. "In the end, I completely forgot the score. I'm happy that I did it because I think that [otherwise] I would be three times more nervous on the match point."

The eight-time champion at the All England Club was sitting in the Royal Box to watch Monday's fourth-round matches on Centre Court, starting with his former rival Novak Djokovic playing Alex de Minaur. Advertisement Federer was greeted by a loud round of applause as he entered the box together with his wife Mirka. He was wearing a blue suit featuring a circular purple badge on his lapel that former champions are given to denote them as members of the All England Club. The Swiss former No. 1 won his first title at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament in 2003 and his eighth in 2017. His last final was in 2019, when he lost an epic five-setter to Djokovic that was the longest title match in Wimbledon history. Also in the Royal Box on Monday was King Frederik X of Denmark, comedian Michael McIntyre and Michael and Carole Middleton — the parents of Kate, Princess of Wales, who is the patron of the All England Club. ___ AP tennis:

Roger Federer is living his best life. The Swiss tennis legend has been enjoying retirement since hanging up his racquet in 2022, and he is making the most of the European summer. Federer was spotted this week soaking in some rays in Saint Tropez on the French Riviera with his wife Mirka and their four children. Roger and Mirka met playing for Switzerland at the Sydney Olympics and teamed up at the 2002 Hopman Cup. They have two sets of twins — identical twin girls Myla and Charlene and fraternal twin boys Leo and Lenny. Federer famously made hearts swoon around the world when he injured his knee while running a bath for his daughters during the 2016 Australian Open. The Federers are enjoying the good life, taking a dip in the Mediterranean waters on a family holiday. Roger, 43, could be seen sporting olive green board shorts and a healthy rug of chest air on his 'dad bod' as he dried off after a dip in the ocean. With one of his sons hanging off his shoulders, Federer looked like he was living his best life as the family hung out in the water. The 20-time grand slam champion appears to be nailing retirement in the years since he called time on his tennis career. Federer is still an ambassador for Japanese apparel giant Uniqlo, with whom he signed a 10-year, $300 million deal in 2018 after departing from his longtime sponsor Nike. He still continues a partnership with luxury watch brand Rolex that stretches back to 2001. Federer is estimated to have a net worth of approximately A$850 million and has built his fortune in recent years as a key investor in Swiss shoe brand ON Running. A regular attendee at the Met Gala, he also attended the Academy Awards earlier this year and was at the French Open last month to honour his old rival Rafael Nadal. Federer, Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic reunited at Roland Garros as a permanent plaque featuring Nadal's foot was unveiled on centre court in honour of the 14-time French Open winner. The greatest of all time (GOAT) debate will continue to rage, especially with Djokovic set to finish his career on 24 grand slam singles titles, equal with Australia's Margaret Court. The decider is considered one of the greatest ever matches — ranked alongside Djokovic's 2019 Wimbledon win over Federer, Nadal's 2008 Wimbledon victory over Federer, the marathon 2012 Australian Open final between Djokovic and Nadal, and John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg's Wimbledon thriller in 1980.
