Long Jumper Murali Sreeshankar Makes Triumphant Return With Gold At Indian Open

Last Updated: Sreeshankar made his comeback at the Indian Open Athletics Meet, winning gold in men's long jump with a leap of 8.05m. This was his first competition since the 2023 Asian Games. The Indian Open Athletics Meet at the Savitribai Phule Pune University Sports Complex on Saturday featured a host of elite athletes, but it was long jumper Murali Sreeshankar who stole the spotlight. Making his highly anticipated return to competitive action after a lengthy injury layoff, India's premier long jumper delivered a powerful statement. Sreeshankar clinched the gold medal in the men's long jump with a leap of 8.05m — the first Indian to cross the 8m mark in the event this year. A Remarkable Comeback Performance Sreeshankar, whose personal best stands at a staggering 8.41m — one of the finest marks in Indian athletics history — showed no signs of rust in his first appearance in nearly two years. Despite a long break from competition, the 25-year-old looked sharp and confident, delivering a top-class performance to mark his return. His gold-winning effort of 8.05m was not only enough to win the event but also signaled that he remains one of India's top medal prospects in track and field. First Competition Since 2023 Asian Games Sreeshankar's last appearance came at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, over 650 days ago. Since then, he had been sidelined by a serious knee injury that required surgery and ultimately forced him to miss the 2024 Paris Olympics — a heartbreaking setback for the talented athlete. Now back in action and pain-free, Sreeshankar has begun building toward what he hopes will be a strong international comeback. With this performance, Sreeshankar has taken his first major step toward qualifying for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. He also has his sights set on the 2026 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, both of which remain key targets on his calendar. Thanks to the support of India's Mission Olympic Cell (MOC), Sreeshankar will compete in a series of international meets across Europe and Central Asia in the coming weeks. His itinerary includes stops in Portugal, Spain, and Kazakhstan from July 19 to August 14. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has approved a funding grant of ₹5.58 lakh to support this tour, further underlining the backing he continues to receive from Indian athletics authorities. view comments First Published: July 12, 2025, 18:22 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘I have identified problem area and working on it'

Gurugram: India's star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra on Friday said he has identified a problem in his game and is looking to address it at the earliest, as he seeks to win a second world championship gold medal later this year. Chopra, who is the strongest Indian medal hope in the September 13-21 showpiece in Tokyo, will be training in Prague and Nymburk in the Czech Republic for 57 days. The World Championship-bound Indian track-and-field athletes, including defending javelin throw gold-medallist Neeraj Chopra, will mostly train in Europe and the USA before the September showpiece after the sports ministry's Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) approved lengthy exposure trips to enhance their medal prospects. He will be heading out with his physio Ishan Marwah tonight and be based in the European country till September 5 at a total cost of Rs 19 lakh. 'I have already identified the areas I need to work on. While throwing the spear I tend to fall too much on my left side. We need to work on that. In training I don't do that, but in competition, it happens because of the extra effort I put in,' Chopra said. The double Olympic medallist said he also needs to work on his consistency to hit the 90-mark more often. 'I have achieved 90m this year. But I need to be more consistent to achieve it more often. I am continuously around 88-89m, and my coach said he is happy, but I need to be more consistent,' Chopra said during the launch of Under Armour store here. Needless to say, his next big target is to finish on top of the podium at the World Athletics Championships.

MOC: Indian Athletes to Train In Europe, USA For World Championships Boost

Indian athletes, including Neeraj Chopra, will train in Europe and the USA before the World Championships. The sports ministry approved Rs 86 lakh. Indian track-and-field athletes heading to the World Championships, including the defending javelin throw gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, will primarily train in Europe and the USA ahead of the September event. This comes after the sports ministry's Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) approved extended exposure trips to boost their chances of winning medals. During the 157th MOC meeting, athletics benefitted the most, with training and competition proposals totaling Rs 86 lakh being approved. A significant portion of this budget was allocated to those who have qualified for the Tokyo event scheduled from September 13 to 21. Neeraj Chopra, India's strongest medal hope and the only athlete with two world championship medals, will train in Prague and Nymburk in the Czech Republic for 57 days. Accompanied by his physio Ishan Marwah, Chopra will depart tonight and stay in the European nation until September 5 at a total cost of Rs 19 lakh. Before his gold in 2023, the 27-year-old had secured a silver in the 2022 edition, making him the first Indian after Anju Bobby George (long jump bronze in 2003) to earn a podium finish in the marquee competition. Steeplechasers Avinash Sable and Parul Chaudhary, along with long-distance runner Gulveer Singh, will train at Colorado Springs, Los Angeles from July 15 to September 3. The government has sanctioned Rs 41.29 lakh for their training expenses. All three athletes, who hold national records, performed admirably at the Asian Championships in May. Sable clinched gold, while Chaudhary won silver medals in the women's steeplechase and 5000m races. Gulveer secured gold in the men's 10,000m and 5,000m events, setting a championship record in the latter. Other approved proposals include Rs 10.32 lakh for middle-distance runner Ajay Kumar Saroj to train with elite athletes at the same venue. Saroj, who won a silver medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, struggled with an ankle injury last year. Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar will compete in Europe and Central Asia (Portugal, Spain, and Kazakhstan) from July 19 to August 14, with the government approving Rs 5.58 lakh for his expenses. Sreeshankar was hindered by a knee injury last year, which prevented his participation in the Paris Olympics despite qualifying. Women's long jumpers Ancy Sojan and Shaili Singh, who won bronze medals at the Asian Championships, will also compete in Europe at events in London, Berlin, and Lausanne, costing Rs 9.21 lakh. Para-shuttlers will compete in Cardiff: From July 22 to 26, 11 para-shuttlers will participate in the British and Irish Para-Badminton Championship in Cardiff, crucial for accumulating ranking points required to qualify for the World Para-Badminton Championships next year. Proven performers like Nitish Kumar, Manoj Sarkar, and Krishna Nagar will be part of the 11-member squad, accompanied by six support staff. The MOC has approved a budget of Rs 44.26 lakh for this group. The online meeting held on Thursday was attended by Sports Secretary and Director General of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Hari Ranjan Rao, Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) CEO N S Johal, Target Asian Games Group (TAGG) head Col. Rakesh Yadav, and other senior members, including national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand, Athletics Federation of India spokesperson Adille Sumariwalla, and Indian Olympic Association vice president Gagan Narang.
