Winona LaDuke
LaDuke is a Native American land activist and author who lives and works on the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota. LaDuke founded the White Earth Land Recovery Project, which works to buy land non-natives acquired and preserve tradition, in 1989. She is cofounder and executive director of Honor The Earth, started in 1993 to raise public support and funding for native environmental groups. In 1996 and 2000, she ran as Ralph Nader's vice presidential candidate on the Green party ticket. LaDuke is an Anishinaabekwe (Ojibwe) enrolled member of the Mississippi Band Anishinaabeg.

Three tribal members sentenced for 2023 Mississippi murder
JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Three tribal members were sentenced for their roles in a murder that occurred in the Pearl River Community of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians Reservation in September 2023. 3 arrested, 3 wanted in Moss Point homicide According to court documents, Michael Jeffrey Shaffer, Sr., 48, and Montero Ray Willis, 22, were both sentenced to prison for murder in the second degree. Shaffer was sentenced to 262 months, and Montero was sentenced 151 months. Deyonkia Alice Willis, 32, was sentenced to 60 months for the crime of accessory after the fact. All three were previously indicted by a federal grand jury in November 2023 and previously pled guilty. The Choctaw Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case as part of the Project Safe Neighborhood's Tribal Initiative. Close Thanks for signing up!
