Samuel L. Jackson and Missy Elliott Headline Adidas' Tribute to a ‘Timeless' Icon
Adidas Originals has united a cast of cultural icons to celebrate the enduring influence of its classic Superstar sneaker silhouette. Actor Samuel L. Jackson stars in and narrates two new ads, which highlight the timelessness of the brand and its cultural impact from basketball to streetwear. "Clocks," which dropped today (July 7), features a handful of the brand's celebrity roster and examines the meaning of timeless style amid fast-moving trends. 'Icons don't follow time–they set it,' Jackson says. Shot in black and white, the 90-second spot features cultural figures including Grammy Award-winning songwriter and producer Missy Elliott; skateboarder Mark Gonzales; Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards; Memphis rapper GloRilla; singer-songwriter Teezo Touchdown; K-pop star JENNIE; and model and actress Gabbriette. 'Pyramids,' meanwhile, features Jackson delivering a monologue in a sparse, black and white setting. He draws a parallel between the ancient pyramids that were 'built to last' and the Superstar. Both spots were created by agency Johannes Leonardo, produced by Division, and directed by Thibaut Grevet, who has developed campaigns across sports, music, and fashion. "This campaign isn't about looking back-it's about spotlighting a new generation of Originals who are building what's next, unapologetically," Annie Barrett, vice president of marketing at adidas Originals, said in a statement. 'Clocks' will run across the brand's digital, social, retail, and PR channels. "Superstar, The Original" marks the next iteration of adidas Originals' "The Original" global campaign, which launched in March. The platform was built as the brand shifts its focus "from celebrating its cultural legacy to inspiring future generations," highlighting its iconic silhouettes like the Superstar II, Handball Spezial, and Samba OG. The campaign underscores the fact that the Superstar model, in particular, continues to transcend culture and generations. Originally created for basketball, the sneaker has since been adopted by rappers, streetwear enthusiasts, and now everyday people. In 2020, adidas Originals celebrated the 50th anniversary of the shoe by launching Club Originals, a music-centric campaign targeting Gen Z. "The Superstar has always been more than just a sneaker-it's a symbol of originality and a spark for cultural change," said Barrett. Earlier this week, a new campaign titled 'Superstar: The Original' was launched in support of the game-changing sneaker. Adidas Originals recruited a roster of stars, including Missy Elliott, Jennie, Mark Gonzales, Anthony Edwards, GloRilla, Teezo Touchdown, and Gabbriette to model the silhouette and capture its global influence. 'From street corners to global stages, it's been worn by those who don't wait for permission to lead,' Barrett added. 'This campaign isn't about looking back—it's about spotlighting a new generation of Originals who are building what's next, unapologetically.' A new Off-Broadway production, titled House of McQueen, will begin previews this August and open on September 9. Luke Newton, known for playing Colin Bridgerton on the smash Netflix series Bridgerton, will portray the iconic designer, while Broadway veteran Emily Skinner will portray McQueen's mother, Joyce. The Boys star Erin Moriarty reveals she's fighting the same autoimmune disease as Wendy Williams
Erin Moriarty gave a health update to her fans and revealed that she is currently battling an autoimmune disorder called Graves' disease. The Boys actress, 30 - who quit social media amid plastic surgery allegations last year - jumped to Instagram this week to get candid with her 2 million followers about her own 'experience.' The star uploaded a series of snaps, which included selfies and other moments from her life in recent months. 'Autoimmune disease manifests differently in everybody/every body,' Moriarty penned in the caption. 'Your experience will be different from mine. My experience will be different from yours. Perhaps greatly, perhaps minutely. 'One thing I can say: if I hadn't chalked it all up to stress and fatigue, I would've caught this sooner. A month ago, I was diagnosed with Graves' disease.' Wendy Williams is another celebrity who has been open about her battle with the autoimmune disorder, as well as Daisy Ridley and Missy Elliott. The disease is caused by an overproduction of thyroid hormones - with some symptoms being fatigue, bulging eyes, heart palpitations, and anxiety, per Mayo Clinic. Erin explained that following the diagnosis, she began undergoing treatment for her symptoms which has turned her life around. 'Within 24 hours of beginning treatment, I felt the light coming back on. It's been increasing in strength ever since.' In conclusion, the actress encouraged on getting health checks and wrote, 'If yours is dimming, even slightly, go get checked. Don't "suck it up" and transcend suffering; you deserve to be comfy. S**t's hard enough as is.' In some of the selfies included in the post, Moriarty flashed small smiles towards the camera while other images showed her looking tired. Erin further showed her struggles with symptoms in text message conversations she previously had with her parents. While talking to her mom, the actress had typed out: 'I'm serious; I really really need relief. I feel nauseated tonight. I feel so s**t and removed from who I am, I can't live like this forever. Or that long. 'There aren't moments anymore, not even a passing 5 seconds, when I feel normal. I've never had that. Not one.' I have been in a hole and I've been consumed by this personal situation at hand.
