Reacting to the awards conferred to the king, Prince Thulani said King Misuzulu's dual recognition marks the first time a sitting Zulu monarch has been internationally honoured in this manner on foreign soil. 'In a historic ceremony that merged tradition with diplomacy, His Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini of the Zulu Kingdom was conferred with two of Africa's most prestigious honours — the African Impact Award and the Humanitarian Impact Award — at the 15th African Achievers Awards, hosted at the Palace of Westminster in London, United Kingdom,' said Zulu. The awards, celebrated over two days in the British Parliament's most iconic chambers — the House of Commons and the House of Lords — were hosted respectively by The Honourable Diane Abbott MP, Mother of the House, and Baroness Sandip Verma, member of the House of Lords and chancellor of Roehampton University. The prince said the event drew statesmen, royals, diplomats, international media, and civil society leaders from across the globe; however, the evening's highest honour and greatest resonance belonged to King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, whose presence marked not just a ceremonial engagement, but a symbolic return of the Zulu crown to the very empire that once exiled his forefathers. His Majesty was accompanied by a 12-member official royal delegation, reflecting the full authority and breadth of the Zulu Kingdom's leadership. Included in this high-level entourage were: Her Royal Highness Queen LaMdhluli, consort to the King. Nkosi Chiliza, deputy traditional prime minister of the Zulu Kingdom. Nkosi Prince Zuzifa Buthelezi, chairperson of the King's Council. Prince Thulani Zulu, official spokesperson of the Zulu Royal House. Prince Nathi Zulu, representative of the Zulu Monarchy in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial House of Traditional Leaders.

Queen Gladys Zulu, matriarch of the Zulu royal family, to be laid to rest this weekend

King Misuzulu kaZwelithini mourns the departure of his paternal grandmother, Queen Gladys Zulu. Image: File The late Zulu royal matriarch, Queen Gladys Zulu, will be laid to rest on Saturday at Mahhashishini royal cemetery. In a statement issued by the royal family, spokesperson Prince Thulani Zulu, the matriarch's funeral services will take place on a sports field adjacent to KwaKhethomthandayo Royal Palace. The queen departed on Friday at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban after an undisclosed illness. She was 87 years old. She was the wife of the late Prince Mcwayizeni, who in 1968, after King Bhekuzulu's death, became a regent because King Zwelithini was still too young to ascend to the throne. Zwelithini took over in 1971. Prince Mcwayizeni was a brother to King Bhekuzulu, who was Zwelithini's father. The queen was well-respected in the royal family and was always referred to as a matriarch. She was a paternal grandmother to the current Zulu king, Misuzulu kaZwelithini, and was always beside him in all the traditional ceremonies presided over by him. In his condolences, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli described her as a pillar within the royal family and a dignified servant of the people whose work as an educator touched and transformed countless lives. Her wisdom, humility, and moral authority were deeply respected across all sectors of society. 'Her presence carried the legacy of grace and strength that we have come to associate with the Royal Household. In her, we saw the quiet leadership of a matriarch, the spiritual depth of a devoted believer, and the tireless spirit of a community builder,' Ntuli said. The premier further stated that the queen was renowned for her commitment to education, her strong leadership within the church, and her enduring efforts in the preservation of Zulu traditions and heritage. According to Ntuli, she lived a life of service, compassion, and cultural reverence and left an indelible mark on both the Royal family and the nation at large. 'We draw comfort in knowing that her life was one of purpose and principle. Her legacy will forever remain etched in the hearts of the Zulu people and the broader South African nation. This is not only a loss to the royal family, but to the entire province and nation,' concluded the premier.

KZN government to establish a beef production enterprise for King Misuzulu's financial needs

King Misuzulu kaZwelithini will get his own beef production company to fund his cultural events. Image: Independent Newspapers Archives KwaZulu-Natal Finance MEC Francois Rodgers is in the process of establishing a beef production enterprise which will help the Zulu royal family to be financially independent and save the province more than R60 million which is annually allocated to King Misizulu kaZwelithini and the family. This was revealed by the Democratic Alliance chief whip in the provincial legislature Dr Imran Keeka on Thursday. The party was reflecting on its first anniversary of the Government of Provincial Unity, particularly its role and achievements. The party said one of its achievements is that it has strengthened relations with the AmaZulu Royal Household and its Finance MEC is working on a beef production enterprise to ensure the monarchy's fiscal independence. 'The Treasury under Rodgers is working on establishing a beef production enterprise to ensure the monarchy's fiscal independence,' said Keeka. If Rogers succeeds, he will achieve what has been elusive since 1994. There had been talk of creating a Royal Household Trust which previous provincial government administrations had described as the vehicle that was going to sustain the Zulu royal family financially and end its financial dependence on taxpayers who fund the king and the royal family's financial needs. Another major achievement listed was Rogers' ability to devise a cost-cutting strategy which has reduced the provincial government's projected over-expenditure from R10 billion to R800 million. The plan is now being implemented. The party described its participation in the GPU as a year of positive change for the people of the province, 'who now have a government focused on placing their needs first and realising the province's true potential'. It said the move from a single majority party government to a partnership consisting of KZN's four leading political parties has not been without its challenges, however, there have been notable successes. The party said its participation in the GPU has allowed it to play a key part in critical decision-making that affects the people of the province. These roles include heading KZN Finance Rodgers, Public Works and Infrastructure which is under MEC Martin Meyer, deputy Speaker through Mmabatho Tembe as well as chairing important portfolio committees such as Health, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and provincial SCOPA( Standing Committee on Public Accounts).
