Australia Announce Squads For ODI And T20I Series Against South Africa

Mitchell Owen has been given a maiden ODI call-up following an impressive run in the recent T20I series against West Indies. Big-hitting allrounder Mitchell Owen is poised to play one-day cricket for Australia after delivering an impressive international debut in the Twenty20 series sweep in the West Indies. The 23-year-old Owen was included in both white ball squads for next month's Top End series against South Africa, announced on Wednesday. Owen, a star opener for Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash domestic T20 competition, scored a half-century in his first game for Australia, contributing to a 5-0 series sweep in the Caribbean. Over four games, he averaged 41.66 runs with a strike rate of 192.3, demonstrating his big-hitting prowess by hitting 12 sixes from 65 deliveries. Cricket Australia's chief selector George Bailey commented, 'As we build toward the T20 World Cup the flexibility and depth shown in the West Indies, outside of the obvious results, has been a huge positive. Mitch Owen and Matt Kuhnemann making their respective debuts and the preparation and work done by Nathan Ellis to allow him to play all five matches were highlights." Travis Head and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood return to the ODI and T20 squads after being rested for the white ball section of the Caribbean tour following Australia's 3-0 test series win. Bailey added, 'The smaller squad for a home series, along with the return of Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood, see some players not part of the squad for this Top End series, but all remain in the frame moving forward." Test captain Pat Cummins is being rested for the white ball series against South Africa to prepare for the Ashes series starting in November, leaving Mitch Marsh to lead Australia in both formats. The T20 matches against the Proteas will be held in Darwin and Cairns on Aug. 10, 12, and 16, followed by ODIs in Cairns and Mackay in northern Queensland on Aug. 19, 22, and 24. Australia T20I Squad: Mitchell Marsh (captain), Sean Abbott, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa. Australia ODI Squad: Mitchell Marsh (captain), Xavier Bartlett, Alex Carey, Ben Dwarshuis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Lance Morris, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Australia Create History, Become 1st Team In The World To...

Last Updated: Australia managed to secure five outright wins in a row against the West Indies to clean sweep the five-match T20I series. The Australia men's cricket team created history on Tuesday (July 29) by becoming the first team in the world to win a five-match T20I series against a Test-playing nation with a scoreline of 5-0. The 2021 T20 World Cup winners faced the West Indies in a five-match T20I series from July 21 to 29 and, under the leadership of Mitchell Marsh, won all five games. In the past on multiple occasions, teams have won bilateral T20I series against a Test-playing nation with a scoreline of 4-1, but no team before Australia managed to secure five outright wins in a 5-match T20I series against any Test-playing nation. In January-February 2020, India defeated New Zealand 5-0 in the five-match T20I series played in New Zealand, but in that series, India won the third and fourth T20Is in the super over. For Australia in the five-match T20I series against the West Indies, Tim David (37-ball century in 3rd T20I), Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Owen (fifty on T20I debut), Josh Inglis, and Cameron Green impressed with their batting performances, and the likes of Ben Dwarshuis, Adam Zampa, and Nathan Ellis made headlines for their bowling performances. In the fifth and final T20I of the series played on Monday (Tuesday IST), the Aussies bowled the West Indies team out for 170 in 19.4 overs. Apart from Shimron Hetmyer (52 runs from 31 balls), other West Indies batters failed to do much with the bat, and three of them were sent back to the pavilion by Dwarshuis, who conceded 41 runs in his quota of four overs. For the visitors, apart from Dwarshuis, Ellis also picked up two wickets for 32 runs in 3.4 overs, and one West Indies batter each was dismissed by Aaron Hardie, Sean Abbott, Maxwell, and Zampa. In the 171-run chase, Owen top-scored for Mitchell Marsh & Co. He hammered 37 runs from just 17 balls after coming out to bat at No. 6, and Tim David added 30 runs from 12 balls to Australia's total of 173/7 in 17 overs. All-rounder Green, who won the Player of the Series award, also scored 32 runs from just 18 balls. view comments First Published: July 29, 2025, 13:03 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Bizarre West Indies tactic backfires as Australia complete clean sweep

Australia has completed a men's series whitewash for the first time in history after chasing down a 171 run target set by the West Indies with 18 balls to spare and three wickets in hand on Tuesday. A brilliant 63-run partnership in just 28 balls by Mitchell Owen (37 off 17 balls) and player of the series Cameron Green (32 off 18) helped lift the Aussies to another win in the fifth and final T20. The victory capped off a brilliant tour for the Australians, winning all eight matches they played. However, the final T20 could have had a very different result if not for a bizarre move from West Indies captain Shai Hope. Chasing 171 to win, the run rate was never going to be an issue for the Aussies, But after Glenn Maxwell (0 off 1 ball), Josh Inglis (10 off 5) and Mitchell Marsh (14 off 8) fell within the space of eight balls of each other, Australia were on the ropes, at 3/25 after 2.2 overs. And after dismissing the dangerous Tim David for 30 off just 12 balls, the West Indies had the game by the scruff of its neck, with Australia 4/60. Windies quicks Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph had the Aussies in all sorts, but bizarrely were pulled off by captain Shai Hope after bowling just two overs each. It was a decision the 31-year-old would now surely regret as fellow seamers Jediah Blades, Matthew Forde and Romario Shepherd were smashed around the ground. They also turned to an even more peculiar tactic of bowling pace off around the wicket. The Aussie batters lapped that up as Owen and Green combined for a partnership of 63 in just 28 balls. And former Australian wicket keeper Brad Haddin slammed Hope for his tactical blunder. 'I feel like they missed a trick,' Haddin said on commentary for ESPN. 'Two most senior fast bowlers were both on a heater, wanting to get into the contest. They had two wickets each. 'Sometimes you just have to go with that gut feel, (rather than being) worried about what's going to happen in four overs time.' Haddin added at the end of Forde's 22-run over: 'Alzarri Joseph, he looks unhappy because he should be bowling.' Bringing spinner Akeal Hosein into the attack bore immediate fruit as he dismissed Owen, but it was too little too late with Australia only needing 48 off 64 by the time Owen trudged off. In the end, Australia deserve all the praise, a perfect 8 from 8, while the West Indies have been left with a lot of thinking to do.

Australia's Caribbean cricket tour ends with a perfect 8-0 record in tests and T20s

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (AP) — Australia completed a sweep of the Twenty20 international cricket series with a three-wicket victory over West Indies on Monday to finish its Caribbean tour with an 8-0 record. Australia went into the last game on a 7-match winning streak following the 3-0 test series sweep and victories in the first four of the T20 internationals. After winning the toss for the eighth straight time, Australia sent the home team in to bat and dismissed West Indies for 170 two balls short of the alloted 20 overs. Shimron Hitmyer's 52 from 31 balls and Sherfane Rutherford's 35 off 17 propped up the innings but the target wasn't big enough to put genuine pressure on the Australian batters. Ben Dharshuis took 3-41 and Nathan Ellis finished with 2-32, while spinner Adam Zampa returned 1-20 in his 100th T20 international after taking a wicket and having a chance dropped off his bowling in the penultimate over. The Australians reached 173-7 with 18 balls to spare, with a 63-run fifth-wicket partnership between Mitchell Owen (37 off 17 deliveries) and Cameron Green (32 off 18) stabilizing the innings. Aaron Hardie finished not out on 28. West Indies had Australia in trouble in the opening powerplay with Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph taking two wickets apiece, but the runs kept flowing. Holder dismissed Glenn Maxwell for a golden duck, the first ball of the second over, when the Australian allrounder swung at a ball that shaped away and edged to short third-man where Jediah Blades juggled the catch but held the second grab. Holder also removed Josh Inglis (10) at the end of the second over. Joseph bowled Mitch Marsh (14) as Australia slipped to 29-3 after 2.2 overs and, after on onslaught of sixes, he had Tim David (30 from 12 balls) caught in the deep as Australia slipped to 60-4 in the fifth over. From there, Owen and Green dominated with a succession of sixes, including one by Owen that landed on the roof on a pavilion. Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein was finally introduced to the attack to change the pace, and had an immediate impact with his second delivery to dismiss Owen and break up the important partnership. Hosein also dismissed Green and Ben Dwarshuis to return 3-17. ___ AP cricket:
