: Police arrested a 59-year-old arms smuggler near platform number 9 of Cantt railway station in Varanasi on Tuesday. A large number of illegal weapons were found with him. The accused, Mithailal, is originally from Bhuili Khas village in Mirzapur and currently lives in Sarnath. He was caught by a joint team of the Special Task Force (STF) and Cantt police. During questioning, Mithailal told police he used to make weapons while living in rented houses in Mirzapur and Sarnath. (For representation only) On Wednesday, deputy commissioner of Police (Varuna), Pramod Kumar, said the police received a tip-off that someone was coming to the station to sell illegal arms. Based on this, the team reached the spot and arrested the accused. Police said that Mithailal had been arrested earlier as well for arms smuggling. This time, officers recovered three 9 mm pistols, a semi-made 32 bore revolver, eight live cartridges of various types including AK-47, over 10 used cartridges, 10 shells of 7.62 mm and 8 mm, five pistol magazines, tools for making arms, a train ticket, and ₹452 in cash. During questioning, Mithailal told police he used to make weapons while living in rented houses in Mirzapur and Sarnath. More than six criminal cases have already been filed against him in Cantt, Maduadih, and Sarnath police stations. These cases date back from 2005 to 2025.

Varanasi: In a joint action, the STF Lucknow field unit and Cantonment police arrested a notorious arms manufacturer and smuggler on platform-9 of Varanasi Junction on Wednesday. A total of six cases under sections of the Arms Act are lodged against him with different police stations. Producing Mithailal before reporters on Wednesday, DCP Varuna Zone Pramod Kumar said that upon receiving information about an arms smuggler coming to Varanasi Junction (Cantt railway station) to sell weapons, a team of STF and Cantt police raided the place and arrested the arms smuggler. Upon searching, three 9mm pistols and a semi-constructed revolver were recovered from his possession. Mithailal, 59, a native of Bhuili Khash village under Adalhat police station in Mirzapur, was currently residing in Ruppanpur area of Sarnath. Mithailal, a notorious arms dealer, has a long criminal history with over six cases registered against him at Cantt, Maduadeeh, and Sarnath police stations of Varanasi, involving criminal activities from 2005 to 2025. The DCP said Mithailal was previously arrested under serious sections of Smuggling and the Arms Act. The police are investigating Mithailal's network and searching for his accomplices.
