Mitrović's chances of playing in Club World Cup very slim
The Serbian forward suffered a leg injury ahead of his team's opening match against Real Madrid and has yet to appear in the tournament. The Saudi club made history by reaching the quarter-finals after defeating English giants Manchester City 4-3 in the round of 16. At this stage, Al-Hilal will face Brazilian side Fluminense, who eliminated European Champions League finalists Inter Milan. Former Fulham striker Mitrović, who joined Al-Hilal in summer 2023, scored 28 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions last season. Al-Hilal is also without talented winger Salem Al-Dawsari, ruled out for the rest of the tournament due to a muscle tear sustained during their group-stage match against RB Salzburg. Mitrović's prolonged absence raises concerns as Al Hilal coach admits worries over striker's injury
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — Al Hilal's Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrović has been missing from the squad for weeks, and now, coach Jorge Jesus has expressed growing concern over the lingering nature of his injury. The prolonged absence of the club's star forward has cast a shadow over the team, raising questions about his return and potential impact on the Saudi Pro League title race. Mitrović, who has been instrumental for Al Hilal since joining on the summer of 2023, has been sidelined due to an injury that has taken longer to heal than initially expected. Despite attempts at rehabilitation, the 29-year-old forward has yet to rejoin full training. On Monday, Al Hilal confirmed that Mitrović will travel to Serbia for further medical evaluation by the specialist who oversaw his initial treatment. The decision to send him abroad highlights the uncertainty surrounding his recovery, with the club seeking reassurance before reintegrating him into the squad. Coach Jorge Jesus did not hide his concern, acknowledging that the Serbian striker's condition is worrisome. 'Mitrović's injury is taking longer than expected. It is concerning, and we need to evaluate it carefully,' Jesus stated in his post-match press conference after Al Hilal's dominant 5-1 victory over Al-Kholood on Tuesday. 'We want to have him back as soon as possible, but we must ensure he is fully fit.' His absence will be particularly felt in the upcoming fixtures, including a crucial league clash against Al Ahli. Mitrović, known for his physical dominance and goal-scoring prowess, has been a key part of Al Hilal's attacking force, and his injury has forced the team to adjust tactically in recent matches. With the Serbian striker expected to return to Riyadh on February 28 after his final medical tests, fans are hoping for positive news. However, Jesus's remarks suggest that Al Hilal may have to continue managing without their star forward for a while longer.
