Texans Pro RB Joe Mixon appeared at No. 58 in NFL's Top 100 players for 2024 season

Joe Mixon's first season with the Houston Texans was a successful rise back up the rankings for running back talent. Those around the NFL would also tend to agree. Mixon appeared at the No. 58 spot on the NFL's Top 100 rankings for the 2024 season. A bruiser bell cow who altered Houston's run game for the first time since 2019, the rank was warranted based on his impact on the personnel. After spending the first seven years of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals, Mixon was traded to the Texans last offseason ahead of being released for a seventh-round draft pick. Once in Houston, fans speculated if he had anything left in the tank and were confused by Nick Caserio's aggressiveness to sign him to a three-year, $27 million extension. In 14 games, Mixon proved that he's worth much more than that with a balanced approach behind the line of scrimmage. Easily slotting in as the new lead back, he recorded his fifth overall and second consecutive season of 1,000-plus rushing yards. For the Texans, Mixon's 1,016 yards marked the first 1,000-yard season for a tailback since Carlos Hyde in 2019. His 11 touchdowns were the most for a running back since Arian Foster in 2012. Earning his first Pro Bowl nod since 2021, Mixon was the undisputed bellcow for the Texans' ground game throughout the 2024 season, recording almost 3.5 times more yards than the next closest teammate. He also made contributions in the passing game, totaling 36 catches for 309 yards and another score, helping Houston secure its second straight AFC South division title. Right now, Mixon is expected to be out for an extended period with a lingering foot injury. He was placed on the NFI list to begin the year, but expecations are for him now to remain away from football activites until the end of training camp. Once Mixon returns, he's expected to remain the lead back in Houston, although his rep share could decrease while splitting carries with former All-Pro Nick Chubb. The hope for the Texans is that the healthy duo will be enough to secure the team's first AFC title appearance and perhaps a trip out west to the Super Bowl this winter.

WATCH: New Texans RB Nick Chubb jukes past defenders for easy TD

Nick Chubb might not be an All-Pro for the Houston Texans, but he's looking the part of a lead running back in practice. Chubb, who is expected to take over as the lead back while Pro Bowl runner Joe Mixon misses a majority of training camp with a foot injury, made several Texans defenders miss him behind the line of scrimmage while he broke past the second level for what would have been a touchdown in a real game. With fans in attendance, No. 21 showed a bit more juice and gave fans something to talk about heading into the afternoon. Here's a clip down below. Chubb, who spent seven seasons with the Cleveland Browns, inked a one-year deal worth $2.5 million in May, though it could be worth up to $5 million if he hits his bonuses. With Mixon's injury, Chubb is going to have the first crack at working through the starting rotation over rookie Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale. A 2018 second-round pick out of Georgia, Chubb lived up to the billing with four Pro Bowl appearances and an All-Pro year in 2022. Part of Chubb's tenure — and eventual downfall — in Cleveland was hindered by injuries. He suffered a suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 2 of the 2023 season against the Pittsburgh Steelers, forcing him to miss the first six games of 2024. Once he returned, Chubb averaged a career-low 3.3 yards per play over his final eight games. In Houston, Chubb hopes to recapture even half of his success prior to his injury while forming a duo with Mixon, who is expected to be back at some point early in the regular season. So far in camp, he's impressed the right people. "He's a pro. Nick has been the same guy. I've always admired Nick from when he was back at Georgia, playing," Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. "I've always admired him and it's no different. I can see why the guy has been good in his career. It's because he's a hard worker. He doesn't say much, but he shows you by his actions." The Texans return to practice on Monday.

Reports: Texans RB Joe Mixon to miss time with foot injury

The race to decide who will be the Houston Texans' lead running back may have gotten a bit closer. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Texans running back Joe Mixon will miss "an extended period of time" while dealing with a foot injury. Mixon had already been on the Texans' non-football injury list to start training camp, but Saturday's report added clarity to a potential timeline for the running back's return. Texans free agent signing and fellow running back Nick Chubb could have a chance to take the starting job from the incumbent Mixon. Chubb signed with Houston during OTAs, months after a broken foot ended his 2024 season early. FANTASY FOOTBALL: Analyzing the AFC South's biggest burning questions Details behind how Mixon's foot injury happened have not been reported yet, but NFL insider Jordan Schultz added that he will miss "multiple weeks of training camp." The 2024 Pro Bowler is hoping to return to the field in time for Week 1. Mixon had a strong first season in Houston in 2024 after spending the first seven years of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals. He recorded 1,016 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 245 carries (4.1 yards per attempt), enough to earn him his second career Pro Bowl nod. Joe Mixon injury history Mixon has dealt with a variety of injuries in his eight-year NFL career. Many of them have been to parts of his lower body, and he did suffer a previous foot injury in 2020 that ended his season early that year. Here's a full timeline of injuries: JOE MIXON ANKLE INJURY: Texans RB calls out NFL on hip-drop tackle rule Texans RB depth chart The Texans have many running backs on their active roster at the start of training camp. Here are the seven tailbacks Houston has to choose from, including several young players and a few veterans: Mixon and Chubb are the two free agent investments the Texans have made at the running back position in free agency during the last two offseasons. They appear to be the two leading backs competing for the starting job, though Mixon has the clear advantage coming off of a 1,000-yard, Pro Bowl season in 2024. Pierce was the Texans' fourth-round pick in 2022 and had a breakout season as a rookie. But by 2024, he had been relegated to a backup role. The Texans selected Marks with a fourth-round pick in this year's draft. The USC product is fresh off of a 1,133-yard, nine-touchdown season for the Trojans. Ogunbowale is back for another season with the Texans after signing a one-year deal in the offseason. He is generally a bigger contributor on special teams than on offense, though he did score a game-winning receiving touchdown in Week 4 last year before making his lone start of the season in Week 5. Taylor and Jordan are returning practice squad players that the Texans re-signed to reserve/future contracts in January.

Texans Pro Bowl RB Joe Mixon expected to miss 'extended time' ahead of 2025 season

The hits keep coming for the Houston Texans The news surrounding Houston Texans Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon has gone from bad to worse as the first week of training camp ends. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Mixon, who was placed on the non-football injury list at the start of camp, is expected to be out for an extended period with a lingering foot injury. The Pro Bowler coming off his first 1,000-yard season with the AFC South champions is expected to be reevaluated closer to the season to determine his availability. What does this mean for the Texans' future? Right now, nothing. Mixon, who inked a three-year, $27 million extension last offseason, likely would have been limited in drills for the majority of training camp. He wasn't expected to play in most preseason games either, as most of the starters see a majority of their reps during team drills in joint practices. But if Mixon were to miss the beginning of the year, that would change the outlook of the offense under new play-caller Nick Caley. Part of the reason for Caley's hiring was his work surrounding running backs, so a limited ground game would elevate the pressure for Pro Bowl quarterback C.J. Stroud to deliver from the jump on the road in Los Angeles. In his first season with the Texans, Mixon rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns, helping Houston secure its second AFC South division title under DeMeco Ryans. On pace to eclipse over 1,300 yards, Mixon was limited to 14 games due to an ankle injury suffered in Week 2's win over the Chicago Bears. With Mixon out, former All-Pro Nick Chubb is expected to start as the first option for the offense. He's coming off an underwhelming season in Cleveland, but the four-time Pro Bowler is just two years removed from an All-Pro season that saw him total 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Texans also drafted Woody Marks in the fourth round out of USC and have Dameon Pierce entering a contract year. Pierce, the Texans' former lead back, is currently on the PUP list entering Week 2 of training camp.

Texans place RB Joe Mixon (ankle) on non-football injury list

Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon was placed on the non-football injury list Wednesday. A Pro Bowl selection during his first season in Houston, Mixon has yet to participate in practice during organized team activities and minicamp due to an ankle injury. Mixon, who turns 29 on Thursday, rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns in 14 games (all starts) last season. He has rushed for 7,428 yards and 60 touchdowns in 111 career games (102 starts) with the Cincinnati Bengals (2017-23) and Texans. He earned his second Pro Bowl selection in 2024. Houston's backfield also includes offseason additions Nick Chubb, Dare Ogunbowale and rookie Woody Marks, among others. Marks was selected by Houston in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Southern California. Fellow running backs Dameon Pierce and J.J. Taylor joined wide receiver Tank Dell, defensive ends Derek Barnett and Denico Autry, safety Jimmie Ward, offensive tackle Trent Brown, defensive tackles Folorunso Fatukasi and Kurt Hinish, linebacker K.C. Ossai and center Eli Cox in being placed on the physically unable to perform list Wednesday. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved
