Haikyu!! teams up with Sendai souvenir favorites Hagi no Tsuki and zunda in an ace collaboration
The popular volleyball anime and famous Sendai confectionaries serve up a winning combination in specially created commemorative package designs. Volleyball manga/anime Haikyu!! largely takes place at the fictional Karasuno High School and other locations in Japan's northeastern Miyagi Prefecture, for which the city of Sendai serves as both prefectural and regional capital. This special connection has led to a limited-time campaign of sweetest proportions that will take place August 14 through 24 throughout JR Sendai Station. Kasho Sanzen's Hagi no Tsuki ('bush clover moon') is probably the most famous food souvenir from Sendai. It's a delicious yellow sponge cake filled with a custard cream in the shape of the moon, and it's one of our absolute favorite regional sweet treats in all of Japan. During the Haikyu!! campaign, you can purchase a box of Hagi no Tsuki featuring a gorgeous new package illustration with character Kei Tsukishima, an apt choice given that his name also contains the kanji for 'moon.' ▼ A box of five Hagi no Tsuki for 1,600 yen (US$10.86) There will be other merchandise featuring Kei illustrations as well, including acrylic stands, tin badges, stickers, postcards, and clear files. Meanwhile, another of Sendai's most famous treats is Zunda Saryo's zundamochi, which is soft mochi filled with mashed and sweetened edamame paste. It may sound like an odd concoction to anyone not familiar with eating edamame as dessert, but trust us–it's extremely satisfying. A new illustration of character Toru Oikawa will also appear on Zunda Saryo's packaging for the campaign, likely playing off the aqua-green color of his school's uniform and the color of edamame. ▼ A box of eight zundamochi for 1,400 yen Never fear, because Toru's also scored his own lineup of special merchandise featuring the new illustration. By the way, anyone who purchases the collaborative Hagi no Tsuki or zundamochi will walk away with their very own stylish bag that showcases their support of both Haikyu!! and Miyagi. That's also not the end of it, because Zunda Saryo is particularly famous for its zunda shake–a creamy, granular creation of sweetened edamame flavor. If you order a tall-sized zunda shake during the promotion, you'll receive a bonus straw tag of Toru in relaxation mode. ▼ Tall-sized zunda shake for 630 yen This illustration also comes with its own lineup of special merchandise. Visitors can find the collaborative Haikyu!! x Hagi no Tsuki and zundamochi offerings at a small pop-up shop outside of the 3rd-floor JR Sendai Station Ticket Office between 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and the zunda shake at three different locations within the station, including one on the 3rd floor. Kasho Sanzen's online shop will also sell the special boxes of Hagi no Tsuki and zundamochi after in-person sales conclude between August 25 and September 3. Miyagi Prefecture in general has lots of famous regional foods from gyutan (grilled cow tongue) to oysters, so you might consider taking a small gastronomic tour of the area during your visit north. Small plane overruns airfield runway in northeastern Japan, 2 people rescued
Emergency services workers have rescued two people from a small plane that fell over the edge of a cliff after overrunning an airfield runway in northeastern Japan. The incident occurred at Semine Airfield in Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture. The local fire department received a call for help shortly before noon on Monday. Fire department officials said a man in his 70s and a woman in her 30s were rescued from the plane and taken to hospital. The officials said they were both conscious and able to speak. The police are asking the two for details about what happened. Footage taken by NHK from a helicopter shows the plane had fallen over the cliff's edge into bushes. The tilted aircraft was at risk of falling further down the cliff. Rescuers have been seen working around the plane. At Semine Airfield, another small plane overran the runway and fell over the cliff last October. The government's Transport Safety Board has been looking into the cause. The board considers Monday's case a serious incident that could have led to a disaster. It has decided to send three investigators to the site.

Earthquake hits Japan days before predicted date
Japan was rocked by an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 on Thursday, just two days before the exact date a prophet predicted a natural disaster would hit. Ryo Tatsuki (pictured), a manga artist, who has often been compared to doom prophet Baba Vanga has been famed for her accurate predictions. She correctly prophesised about the deaths of Freddie Mercury and Princess Diana alongside many huge world events. The artist was even able to predict the coronavirus pandemic and the Kobe earthquake in 2011. A novel released by the artist based on her 'prophetic dreams' said that there would be a disastrous natural disaster on July 5, 2025. The novel, called The Future I Saw, was first published in 1999 and re-released in 2021. Social media has been awash with her predictions, although the artist has said people should rather listen to expert insights. After the chatter online, the governor of Miyagi prefecture, Yoshihiro Murai said: 'It would be a significant issue if unfounded rumors on social media impacted tourism. There is no cause for concern since the Japanese are not leaving the country.' According to the country's Meteorological Agency, the epicentre of the earthquake was off the coast of the Tokara island chin located in Kagoshima, almost 745 miles away from Tokyo. Despite the earthquake, the agency has said that a tsunami warning has not been issued. Meanwhile, a seismic intensity of '6 lower' on Japan's 1-7 scale was recorded at Akusei Island, according to the agency. Baba Vanga (pictured), born in 1911, also predicted that this year, there would be devastating earthquakes around the world. She also accurately said that Europe would be rocked by a devastating war. More disturbingly, she added that Russia would survive the wars and end up dominating the world.

12 Must-Have Japanese Sake Brands
getty It's been a slow year for the growth of many alcoholic categories, however, sake's popularity continues to surge throughout the globe. In 2024, sake — the alcoholic beverage brewed from fermented rice — experienced steady growth around the globe with exports extending to a record high of 80 countries, according to OhBEV marketing agency. North America comprised 29 percent of sake's total export value, which proved a dominant drive of the category's global expansion. And as of this year, the British supermarket chain, Waitrose, reported a 241 percent surge in searches for sake as the drink is predicted to become the next big trend in the UK. With the category experiencing momentous growth, we asked a number of beverage experts to share the must-have Japanese sake brands from classics to rare pours that would impress any connoisseur. Kubota Brewed by Asahi Shuzo Sake Brewing Company, Kenta Katagai, the executive chef at Sushi @ Temple Records in Boston, Mass. describes Kubota as 'the king of sake.' The Nagoya, Japan native specifically points to the Manju style as 'the most elegant and refined sake of the Kubota series.' Hakurakusei In the Miyagi prefecture, a young woman toji (master brewer) is reinventing the historic, family-run brewery, Niizawa Shuzo, to create the ultimate food sake, according to Courtney Kaplan, co-owner and beverage director of OTOTO, Camélia and Tsubaki in Los Angeles. 'Their Hakurakusei Tokubetsu Junmai is a real utility player, perfect with almost all types of food and impeccably balanced with every element perfectly in place.' Kozaemon If you're looking for a starting point for a 'classical and traditional sake,' Kodai and Yudai Uno, owners of Shirube in Santa Monica, suggest Kozaemon Junmai, produced by Nakajima Brewing Company. 'You get the bold flavor of rice [with] lots of umami and nice acidity to balance it out.' Dassai Dassai is one of Japan's leading breweries, according to Vicky Vecchione, sake sommelier and head of bars at Sticks'n'Sushi, the Danish-Japanese restaurant group. Vecchione points to their 45 Nigori as it is 'smooth, milky, and gently sweet with a fruity undertone.' She adds: 'Its versatility shines across a wide range of dishes — from creamy puddings and spicy laksa noodles to fruit salads and grilled calamari.' IWA Former chef de cave of Dom Pérignon Champagne crafts this line in collaboration with Shiraiwa K.K. Brewery's expert toji in the Toyama prefecture. It's often referred to as 'a wine-lover's sake' for its rich layers and finesse. Ryan Vando, U.S. regional head of wine for Zuma, especially highlights IWA 5 'Assemblage 4' Junmai Daiginjo. 'This sake evolves beautifully across temperatures—from chilled to warm—offering different aromatic expressions.' He recommends pairing it with robata meats, miso-glazed black cod. Takeda 'There's a quiet confidence to this one,' prefaces Josh Clouser, food and beverage adviser of Takibi in Portland, Oregon. He highlights Takeda Black Skull Honjozo Nama as 'the kind of sake that keeps you guessing, shifting with each sip, revealing something new every time you come back to it and pairs well with salads and sushi.' The rice comes from just up the road, just about 20 minutes away, and the brewery leans into its own proprietary yeast, which adds a signature twist. Miyoshino Jozo The Miyoshino Jozo brewery is located in the Yoshino region of Nara prefecture where cherry trees cover the surrounding hills. 'The brewer Teruaki Hashimoto is committed to local agriculture and has determined not to burden local farmers with the difficulty and risk of cultivating hard-to-grow varieties,' explains Marc Lioussane, co-owner of Selune in Brooklyn. He embraces old-school brewing methods, uses whatever rice the farmers grow and adjusts his methods to bring out the best flavor, and uses only natural yeasts to portray the local environment — or a sense of terroir — in his sake. Hakkaisan 'Sparkling sake is really unique,' says Katagai, who particularly appreciates Hakkaisan Brewing Company's Hakkaisan AWA. 'It's very special,' he says, describing its cloudy and creaminess with a simultaneous crisp finish. 'It's a nice way to finish a meal and a great sake for the summer.' Heiwa Run by a fourth generation president, Heiwa Shuzo Brewery 'is pushing boundaries while still maintaining a commitment to quality,' says Kaplan. She points to their line of fruit sakes called tsuru-ume as low ABV and perfect for picnics. Try mixing them with club soda for a zesty spritz, she advises. Sake Ono Only a little over a year old, Sake Ono has splashed onto the sake scene with their clean, crisp Junmai Daiginjo. 'One of the most versatile sakes (and ideal mixed in a cocktail) this sake features a refreshing profile with hints of lactic acidity,' says Vecchione. 'It's perfect as an aperitif and a natural companion to any aperitivo food such as olives, charcuterie, cheeses, and focaccia.' Terada Honke This Chiba prefecture-based brewery produces a Daigo no Shizuku by using the medieval method of bodaimoto so that it's a modern reflection of what sake tasted like 600 years ago, explains Lioussane. The brewer read journals that said sakes were slightly sweet back then so expect 'a very unique sake that tastes like a sweet Vouvray.' Kaze no Mori An unpasteurized sake with an effervescent finish, the Uno brothers recommend this sake from Yucho Brewing Company as an aperitif for its 'lively and fresh' palate.

JR East to suspend E8 shinkansen trains for time being
East Japan Railway, or JR East, said Wednesday that it will suspend some services on the Yamagata Shinkansen train line, following malfunctions found on E8 series Shinkansen trains. The railway operator said that it will halt individual operations of E8 trains until the cause of the trouble is identified. On Tuesday, an out-of-service E8 train became unable to accelerate while traveling northward between Utsunomiya and Nasushiobara stations in Tochigi Prefecture, leading to a service suspension between Tokyo Station and Sendai Station in Miyagi Prefecture for about five and a half hours. JR East said that a power supply device malfunctioned, causing the motor to stop working. The company added that three more E8 trains — two in service and one out of service — suffered issues during the service suspension. The E8 series entered service last March. Nine trains are in operation, while two are undergoing test runs. The four trains that malfunctioned were the latest version, delivered in November last year and after.
