2 new Raorchestes frog species found in Meghalaya, named after Khasi culture

Shillong: Two new species of bush frogs — Raorchestes jadoh and Raorchestes jakoid — were discovered by a team of researchers in Meghalaya. A team of researchers from Assam Don Bosco University, Help Earth, and Mizoram University found the frogs --- Raorchestes jadoh and Raorchestes jakoid --- in Meghalaya. (Sourced) The researchers from Assam Don Bosco University, Help Earth, and Mizoram University found the frogs throwing a spotlight on Meghalaya's rich but still largely untapped amphibian diversity. Holiness Warjri, a researcher from Assam Don Bosco University, discovered Raorchestes jadoh at an elevation of 1,655 metres in his village, Langtor, in the Eastern West Khasi Hills. 'Discovering a new species in my own village is both humbling and inspiring. Naming it jadoh—a dish that brings our Khasi families together—was my way of honouring the deep bond between our culture, land, and nature. I hope this frog becomes a symbol of pride for our people,' Warjri said. Also read: Schistura Densiclav: New species of cave-dwelling fish found in Meghalaya Raorchestes jakoid was discovered in Lawbah, East Khasi Hills district, at an elevation of 815 metres. Jakoid derives from the Khasi word for frog. 'This nomenclature honours the Khasi community's rich linguistic and culinary traditions and reinforces the role of indigenous knowledge in conservation,' said the researchers. They are part of the Raorchestes parvulus species complex. With these two, seven species of frogs have been documented in the state. Also Read: Pune scientist central to discovery of four new species of parasitic wasps Both frogs were found in disturbed or secondary habitats—close to human settlements—suggesting a degree of ecological tolerance. But researchers cautioned that this does not ensure long-term survival, especially in a region facing rapid habitat loss due to fragmentation and land-use change.

Mizoram University gets A+ grade in latest NAAC accreditation

The Mizoram University (MU) has been awarded the A+ grade with CGPA 3.30 in the latest cycle of assessment of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The university had the A grade with CGPA 3.16 in the previous cycle of assessment. The university's Vice-Chancellor Dibakar Chandra Deka said the recognition highlighted the Mizoram University's unwavering commitment to excellence in teaching, research, infrastructure development, and student-centric initiatives. 'This achievement is considered remarkable for the university in its Silver Jubilee year, a university not easily accessible from mainland India, more so in the global context,' Mr. Deka said. A seven-member team of academicians deputed by the Bengaluru-based NAAC visited the Mizoram University campus in blended mode, both physical and virtual, from June 3-5. The NAAC, an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission, assesses higher educational institutions across India on key parameters, including curriculum, teaching-learning processes, research and innovation, governance, infrastructure, and student support services.

Not Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, this state declared as India's first fully literate state, it is…

Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced on Tuesday that Mizoram has become the first fully literate state in India. The declaration was made during a function at Mizoram University (MZU) in the presence of Union Minister of State for Education, Jayant Chaudhary. 'As we celebrate this achievement, we also renew our commitment to sustaining literacy through continuous education, digital access, and vocational skill training,' the CM's Office quoted him as saying in a post on X. 'Let us now aim higher: digital literacy, financial literacy, and entrepreneurial skill for all Mizos,' he added. Chaudhary congratulated the state government and the people for the achievement. 'Today, we proudly declared Mizoram as the first fully literate state under the visionary Ullas – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram. Congratulations to the people of Mizoram and Hon'ble CM @PuLalduhoma for this achievement,' he posted on X. 'Special thanks to Hon'ble Education Minister Dr. Vanlalthlana for championing this cause. The Chief Minister was gracious in commending the work of previous State Governments as well in the remarkable journey of progress Mizoram has undertaken. May the Northeast continue to lead the way in building a Shikshit, Kushal, and Atmanirbhar Bharat,' he said. As per the 2011 Census, the state had a literacy rate of 91.33 per cent, ranking third in the country. Building on this foundation, the ULLAS — Understanding of Lifelong Learning for All in Society — and Nav Bharat Saksharta Karyakram were implemented to identify and educate the remaining non-literate individuals, officials said. Based on projections from the 2011 census data, surveys were conducted, and 3,026 illiterates were identified. Out of them, 1,692 were found to be potential learners. A total of 292 volunteer teachers, among whom were students, educators, resource persons, and Cluster Resource Centre Coordinators, stepped forward to lead this mission, officials said. The collective efforts, dedication, and community mobilisation have resulted in Mizoram achieving full literacy, they said. (With Inputs From PTI)
