MoS Margherita emphasises need for early completion of review of ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement
New Delhi [India], July 14 (ANI): Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, during his recent Malaysia visit, emphasised the need for early completion of the review of ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) and underlined development partnerships in digital, maritime, health and innovation, as per a statement from the MEA. Minister Pabitra Margherita led the delegation at the ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AIFMM), 15th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting (EAS FMM) and 32nd ASEAN Regional Forum on July 10-11, 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In his remarks at the AIFMM on July 10, MoS Margherita extended India's continued support to Malaysia's chairmanship of ASEAN and reiterated India's support for ASEAN unity and centrality. Further, MoS Margherita appreciated progress in the implementation of the 10 Point proposal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, announced at the 21st ASEAN-India Summit in Lao PDR in 2024 to further strengthen the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and shared the initiatives taken this year under the India -ASEAN Year of Tourism. 'He emphasised the need for early completion of the review of ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) and underlined development partnerships in digital, maritime, health and innovation,' Ministry of External Affairs said in the statement Monday. At the 15th EAS FMM on July 11, 2025, MoS Margherita underlined India's contribution towards strengthening the Leaders-led EAS platform as the EAS mechanism completes 20 years and exchanged views on the current regional and international developments. Preparations for the upcoming 20th EAS Summit, scheduled in October 2025, were also discussed. At the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) held on July 11, MoS Margherita participated in a constructive exchange of views on pressing international and regional developments, and deliberated on the future trajectory of the ARF process. He underscored India's deep concerns over the persistent threat posed by Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism, particularly in the wake of the horrific terror attack in Pahalgam in the Indian UT of Jammu and Kashmir. The Minister reaffirmed India's resolute commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. He commended the ASEAN-led mechanisms, including the emerging regional security architecture, as an important platform for candid discussions and collective efforts to address the challenges in the region. Minister Margherita also held bilateral meetings with the Secretary General of ASEAN and the Foreign Ministers of Cambodia, the Philippines, and Timor Leste, on the sidelines of the ASEAN-related meetings. MoS Margherita meets US, Japan Foreign Ministers on sidelines of East Asia Summit
Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], July 11 (ANI): Minister of State for External Affairs, MoS Pabitra Margherita, held interactions with the top brass of the US and Japan amongst the leaders he met on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit taking place in Malaysia. Taking it to X, MoS Margherita expressed delight upon meeting the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. He said, 'Delighted to meet US Secretary of State @secrubio on the sidelines of the 15th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.' MoS Margherita also met Japan's Foreign Minister, Takeshi Iwaya, on the sidelines of the Summit. 'Glad to meet H.E. Takeshi Iwaya, Foreign Minister of Japan, on the sidelines of the 15th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia', he wrote on X. Thanking Timor-Leste for its support to India in the fight against terrorism, MoS Margherita underscored the ongoing bilateral cooperation for further strengthening of ties. He said, ' Happy to have met Bendito Freitas, Foreign Minister of Timor-Leste, in the margins of ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur today. Discussed ongoing bilateral cooperation for further strengthening the Delhi-Dili partnership. Thanked Timor-Leste for solidarity with India in its fight against terrorism'. He also extended thanks to Cambodia for supporting India's fight against terrorism and discussed the multifaceted partnership. 'Delighted to have a meeting with H.E. PRAK Sokhonn, Dy. The high-level interactions with the US and Japanese leaders come shortly after External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar had met them during the QUAD Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Washington, DC earlier this month. The Foreign ministers of the Quad nations met in Washington, DC, on July 1 to reaffirm their steadfast commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Japan's Minister of Foreign Affairs Takeshi Iwaya, and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed concern about the situation in the East China Sea and South China Sea. The four leaders had reiterated their strong opposition to any unilateral actions that attempt to change the status quo by force or coercion. Foreign Ministers expressed concern regarding dangerous and provocative actions, including interference with offshore resource development, the repeated obstruction of the freedoms of navigation and overflight, and the dangerous manoeuvres by military aircraft and coast guard and maritime militia vessels, especially the unsafe use of water cannons and ramming or blocking actions in the South China Sea. The Quad members had unequivocally condemned terrorism in all its forms, the Joint Statement from the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting stated. The members, referring to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. The 15th East Asia Summit (EAS) took place in Kuala Lumpur on Friday. The Meeting reviewed ongoing EAS cooperation and discussed its future direction, while also exchanging views on regional and international developments. Speaking to the Press on the sidelines of the meeting, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the visit. He underscored that the US is the number one source of foreign direct investment in Southeast Asia. 'We're not abandoning any of that, nor are we abandoning these strong bilateral ties that we have with many of these countries, some of which go back decades and decades'. India, Asean adopt new 5-year action plan at foreign ministers' meeting
Minister of State for External Affairs, MoS Pabitra Margherita, co-chaired the Asean-India Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Malaysia on Thursday. The Meeting saw the adoption of a new Asean-India Plan of Action for the next five years. In a post on X, he described the meeting as productive, which he had co-chaired with Theresa P Lazaro of the Philippines. MoS Margherita noted that the meeting resulted in the adoption of a new Asean-India Plan of Action for 2026-2030, which aims to expand cooperation further and give impetus to the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and Asean. Highlighting that as celebrations of the Asean-India Year of Tourism are on, MoS Margherita said that discussions also took place on enhancing people-to-people relations. Other areas which featured in discussions included proposals for cooperation in the digital field, disaster management, defence, economy, maritime and health. MoS Margherita held a meeting with the Secretary General of Asean, Kao Kim Hourn, on the margins of the Foreign Ministers' Meet. In a post on X, he said, "Had a very cordial meeting with Secretary General of Asean, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, today on the margin of the Asean-India Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Appreciated his personal commitment as the head of the Asean Secretariat in facilitating implementation of decisions of leaders towards strengthening our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership." MoS Margherita also met the Foreign Minister of Vietnam, Bui Thanh Son, on the sidelines of the Foreign Ministers' Meet. He also held interaction with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia. Upon meeting Philippines' Foreign Affairs' Secretary, Theresa P Lazaro, MoS Margeherita said, "Glad to meet Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, H.E. Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro SecLazaro, in the margins of Asean-India Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Malaysia. Acknowledging the long standing friendship and 75 years of diplomatic relationship between our countries, we discussed ways to further strengthen our bilateral cooperation. Thanked the Philippines for solidarity with India in its fight against terrorism." The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), had noted in a previous statement that MoS Margherita is visiting Kuala Lumpur from July 10-11 at the invitation of the current Asean Chair, Malaysia. India and Asean share cultural and civilisational bonds. The MEA in a previous statement had underscored that Asean is the cornerstone of India's Act East Policy and the Indo-Pacific vision. The visit by MoS Margherita would renew India's deep engagement with the Asean-centred regional architecture, underline our strong commitment to Asean unity, Asean centrality and the Asean Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) and strengthen the Asean-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, MEA noted in its statement.
