Supernatural Thriller ‘Detective Kien: The Headless Horror' Scores Global Deals for Mockingbird (EXCLUSIVE)
'The Last Wife' director Victor Vũ's Vietnamese supernatural thriller 'Detective Kien: The Headless Horror' has locked down international distribution deals across major global territories following its unveiling at Hong Kong FilMart 2025. Mockingbird Pictures, handling international sales for the period horror-mystery, confirmed distribution partnerships with 3388 Films (North America), Infinity Group (Australia and New Zealand), MovieCloud (Taiwan), and Lotte Cultureworks (Korea). Negotiations remain active for additional territories including Thailand, Malaysia, China, and Hong Kong. Vũ, known for his sophisticated visual style and storytelling prowess, delivers what Mockingbird Pictures describes as a 'cinematic experience that is both visually stunning and emotionally gripping' with a narrative full of 'chilling twists and heart-pounding moments.' Production authenticity was paramount, with the crew creating nearly 1,000 custom-designed period costumes to accurately represent the historical era. Actors reportedly wore between three to five layers of clothing daily to authentically portray the social hierarchy and cultural elements of the period. 'We are thrilled to bring Victor Vũ's vision from Vietnam to a global audience,' said Phong Duong, business director of Mockingbird Pictures, who worked alongside Ngoc Bui, senior manager at Galaxy Studio, to secure the international distribution agreements. The film is co-produced by Vũ's November Films and Vietnam's Galaxy Studio, with Mockingbird Pictures handling global sales rights. 'Detective Kien: The Headless Horror' is scheduled for a local release on April 30, strategically timed to coincide with Vietnam's Reunification Day holiday. Vietnam's Victor Vu Returns To Horror With ‘Detective Kien: Headless Horror'; Mockingbird Picks Up Sales
EXCLUSIVE: After making a few critically-acclaimed romantic dramas, leading Vietnamese filmmaker Victor Vu is returning to the horror genre with Detective Kien: Headless Horror, a big-budget mystery horror with a period setting. Mockingbird Pictures has picked up international sales rights and will introduce the film, produced by Vietnam's Galaxy Studio and Vu's November Films, to buyers here at Filmart. The script has been in development for two years, based on the novel The Lake Of Vengeance, set in Vietnam's Northern Uplands. The story revolves around a town where the inhabitants have been mysteriously disappearing and rumours abound that there are ghosts under the lake eating human heads and leaving the rotting corpses floating on the water's surface. In addition to capturing the stunning scenery of Vietnam's Northern Uplands region, the production involved meticulously crafting an ancient Vietnamese village dating back 200 years. 'The atmosphere is filled with suspense and an alluring thrill,' said the film's producers in a statement. 'Each moment builds into an atmosphere taut with anxiety, a haunting melody of suspense where the thrill is a dangerous, heart-pounding brush with the unknown.' One of Vietnam's best known filmmakers, Vu has most recently made a series of lush romantic dramas such as The Last Wife (2023), a period drama about a woman forced into an arranged marriage with a wealthy man; Dreamy Eyes (2019) and Yellow Flowers On The Green Grass (2015). Mockingbird, which entered sales last year after becoming one of Vietnam's biggest indie distributors, is unveiling a large slate of Vietnamese and Indonesian horror movies, also including Do Quoc Trung's Exorcist: The Blood Demon and Baim Wong's Sukma.
