Crop and livestock supply stable despite hot weather in Malaysia
SHAH ALAM: The supply of crops and livestock across Malaysia remains stable despite the prolonged hot and dry weather triggered by the Southwest Monsoon, according to the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM). Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu stated that the ministry has not received any significant reports of major supply disruptions. While some weather-related complaints have surfaced, they remain isolated and manageable. 'Overall, disruptions are minimal and the situation remains under control,' he said after launching the Agriculture Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) @KPKM carnival here today. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) earlier confirmed that the Southwest Monsoon, which began on May 10, is expected to persist until September. Separately, Mohamad highlighted the coconut industry's potential as a key economic driver, similar to pineapples. He noted increasing demand for both mature coconuts, actively cultivated in Sabah, and young coconuts, particularly from China. 'The crop is expected to generate impressive export value, just like pineapples, which have surpassed RM1 billion in sales,' he said. Mohamad previously commended the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) for boosting production and export growth in the sector.

Mat Sabu: Vegetable supply remains under control despite heatwave
SHAH ALAM: Malaysia's vegetable supply remains under control despite the current heatwave, said Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. "So far, the hot weather phenomenon has not had a significant impact on the supply of vegetables from the country's main farming areas, and the supply remains abundant. "Only a few areas have been affected. In fact, we have a good supply support system. "For example, if there is a shortage in the northern states, produce from the south will help meet demand. "Thank God, the situation is still under control," he said after launching the 2025 TVET Agriculture Carnival @ KPKM in Kemuning Utama here today. On claims that vegetable prices in Cameron Highlands were rising, Mohamad said it was a common occurrence, as production is weather-dependent. He said the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority would continue to monitor and address the issue. "This is something that tends to happen under certain conditions, but it does not persist continuously," he said.

Agriculture TVET graduates' employability hits 81.23 pct in Malaysia
SHAH ALAM: The employability rate of graduates from Agriculture Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) climbed to 81.23 per cent in 2023, up from 78.1 per cent the previous year. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu highlighted the consistent five-year growth in graduate marketability, though it still trails the national average. He emphasised TVET's role in shaping skilled professionals adept in both theory and hands-on applications. 'Modern agriculture is no longer about hoes and soil. TVET students now engage with robotics, IoT, AI, drones, and smart farming to enhance productivity with minimal resources,' Mohamad said during the Agriculture TVET@KPKM Carnival. The event gathered 460 students and 200 employees from 16 institutes, showcasing 45 innovations. For Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) graduates, poultry led with 100 per cent employability, followed by ruminant farming (93.2 per cent) and small machinery maintenance (92.3 per cent). Catch fishery and padi production both recorded 91.7 per cent. Since 1969, KPKM has produced 25,783 graduates, aiming to strengthen Malaysia's agrofood industry globally and secure national food supply.
