China, Russia to sign SEANWFZ treaty as US reviews decision
KUALA LUMPUR: China and Russia have confirmed their intention to sign the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ), while the United States is still reviewing the agreement, according to Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. The participation of major global powers in the treaty is expected to reinforce Southeast Asia's status as a peaceful region free from nuclear threats. 'We have established Southeast Asia as a peaceful region, and next week, foreign ministers will convene for further discussions,' Mohamad said during Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's engagement session with the Malaysian diaspora in Rome. The SEANWFZ, also called the Bangkok Treaty, was signed in 1995 by all 10 ASEAN member states and took effect in 1997. The treaty's protocol requires Nuclear Weapon States (NWS) to respect the zone's non-nuclear status, refrain from threatening nuclear attacks, and avoid actions that undermine the agreement. Malaysia is set to host the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (58th AMM) and related sessions from July 8 to 11 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). The country assumed the ASEAN Chairmanship in January 2025, succeeding Laos under the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability.' This marks Malaysia's fifth time leading ASEAN, having previously chaired in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.

Malaysia sees Italy as key strategic partner, says Anwar
ROME: The peace that Malaysia and the region enjoy has paved the way for a blossoming economic environment and a robust private sector, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said Malaysia, as Asean chair, had endeavoured to resolve contentious issues, as only a stable bloc could lead to fruitful economic achievement. Reminding Malaysians that they are, in fact, ambassadors of the nation, he said: 'The Malaysian diaspora is an important asset as they function as envoys representing the country outside. Let me urge you to continue taking opportunities to boost your skills and expertise so that you will bring something back to the country,' he told Malaysians living in Italy at a dinner soon after touching down here. Anwar and his delegation, which includes prominent corporate figures, arrived here yesterday (July 1) for a three-day visit at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations. The group will visit Paris and Rio de Janeiro in the coming days. The PM, who travelled with his delegation on a chartered Malaysia Airlines flight, was received by Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Malaysian envoy to Italy Datuk Zahid Rastam, among others, upon landing. 'Malaysia sees Italy as a vital strategic partner in Europe, and we are committed to enhancing cooperation in the trade, investment and defence industries. Anwar added that the visit would also further close the gap between Europe and South East Asia in the current geopolitical challenges. Earlier, Mohamad Hasan paid tribute to Malaysia's excellent image, saying that the nation's good perception by outsiders had brought about numerous and frequent requests to meet with Anwar. 'The fact that we practise neutrality is also a pull factor, let's be clear that Malaysia talks to all parties,' he said. Transport Minister Anthony Loke also noted that Malaysia's profile was growing, which bodes well in pulling more tourists to the country. 'This is excellent as we will have Visit Malaysia Year next year.' Loke noted that once Malaysia become more famous, especially among travellers, his ministry would come up with even more connectivity, adding that several key transport projects were shaping up very well. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said the nation's economy was faring well despite challenges in geopolitics. 'Investments and FDIs are coming in,' he said, thanking the corporate side for their contributions.

PM: Government gives priority to projects that benefit the rakyat
ROME, July 2 — The Madani Government is willing to take hard and sometimes unpopular decisions to ensure development and projects that benefit the rakyat can be implemented, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar, who is here on a three-day working visit, said despite criticism over government's move to implement certain policies such as subsidy rationalisation or tariff, they needed to be carried out for the benefit of the people. 'All governments, all prime ministers in the past talk about taking away subsidies from foreigners, but none took the right action,' he said at the Majlis Ramah Mesra Bersama Diaspora Malaysia here last night. The premier said various actions taken by the government, including subsidies and tax rationalisations were implemented to build more schools, universities and hospitals that will help the masses. During the dinner, Anwar also shared that various programmes and policies are being undertaken by his government to ensure the country remains competitive. 'To our diaspora in Italy, you are our ambassadors and our asset. You have a big role to play in bringing Malayia into the international platform. 'Therefore, I leave a message for you to continue to seize every opportunity and space to strengthen your knowledge, skills and networks in order to contribute back to the homeland, good governance,' he said. BN to field ‘solid team' for Sabah elections, says Tok Mat

(Bernama pic) TANGKAK : Barisan Nasional will contest the Sabah state elections as a solid team, said the coalition's deputy chairman Mohamad Hasan. Mohamad, who is also Umno deputy president, said BN is currently exploring cooperation with Pakatan Harapan as well as electoral understandings with local parties in Sabah in preparation for the state polls, expected this year. 'We are exploring cooperation with PH in Sabah because BN cannot go it alone there, so we need partners to face the state elections. We are still considering various aspects, especially seat distribution. 'We don't want confusion. We want to be a strong team, so that voters are not confused and will give their support to strong parties that can govern Sabah,' he said after opening the Ledang Umno division's delegates meeting. Wanita Umno leader Noraini Ahmad said a detailed sentiment study is being conducted to understand voter trends and grassroots feedback, which will be channelled directly to central, division and 'war room' leaders. She said the sentiment analysis is being conducted continuously across the country to strengthen the party, and not just for elections. 'For the Sabah state elections, the sentiment study has been completed and we leave it to the leadership to disclose the findings,' she said in Penang, after opening the Kepala Batas Wanita Umno, Youth and Puteri division delegates' meeting. Noraini said Wanita Umno is moving in step with Sabah Umno to ensure the election machinery is always at peak readiness. The five-year term of the Sabah state assembly expires on Nov 11, unless dissolved sooner. Elections must be held within 60 days of dissolution.

UMNO must come first, says Mohamad Hasan amid talk of internal sabotage
UMNO Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has addressed claims that certain quarters are attempting to create friction between him and party President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Speaking at the Ledang UMNO Division Meeting, Mohamad, who also serves as Foreign Minister, said he remained unfazed by such efforts, which he believes are aimed at undermining party unity. 'There are people trying to stir things up between me and the President,' he said. 'I simply smiled because the person behind it is not credible. They've already spoken poorly of the President before. I can only imagine what's been said about me,' he added. Without naming anyone specifically, he stressed that such provocations would not distract him from his duties. Mohamad acknowledged that serving as UMNO's number two comes with a heavy responsibility, particularly in offering steadfast support to the President. He added that the party's priority now is to reestablish itself as a strong voice for the people, especially in defending the rights of Malays and Islam. 'UMNO must come first. When we win, it's a victory for everyone, like a full bus arriving safely. But if we lose, it's like a single train carriage breaking away.
