From pastry shops and perfumeries to restaurants and tailoring stores, 15 businesses in Abu Dhabi have been honoured with the Urban Treasure awards for shaping the capital's cultural and commercial landscape. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), presented the awards at a special ceremony at the Cultural Foundation in the capital city. With each successive edition, we reaffirm our commitment to preserving, protecting, and promoting the cultural identity of the UAE capital, ensuring its lasting resonance within our community and inspiring future generations to cherish and build upon its foundations.'The Urban Treasures Initiative was launched to recognise the city's landmark homegrown businesses, including restaurants, bakeries, tailors, fabric stores, perfumeries, jewellers, pharmacies, photography studios, and similar establishments, which have thrived in Abu Dhabi for 20 years or more. Seeking to further raise the profiles of these treasures and preserve them for future generations, the award aligns with DCT Abu Dhabi's Modern Heritage Initiative, which celebrates and safeguards the emirate's more recent past. Nominations for Urban Treasures 2025 were opened to the public last year, allowing them to be a part of celebrating the efforts of these establishments. The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has announced the 15 recipients of its fourth Urban Treasures initiative. The annual celebration honours long-standing businesses that have played a key role in shaping Abu Dhabi 's cultural and social landscape. Launched in 2020, the list highlights cafes, perfumeries and other establishments that have operated for more than 20 years in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. Winners are awarded an Urban Treasures brass plaque to display in their storefronts. They will also be showcased in a year-long social media campaign aimed at encouraging more visitors, highlighting each establishment's role as a vital part of its neighbourhood's urban and social fabric. The 15 recipients this year are: Khulood Club, Gulf Pastry, Zahrat Al Khaleej Nabulsi Sweets, Orchid Tailoring & Embroidery Shop, Mohammed Farooq Perfumes, Al Jumaira Studio & Stores, Al Yahar Modern Restaurant and Kitchen, Three Star Watches Shop, Shawarma Ala Alragef Cafeteria, Happy Yemen Restaurant, Ahmed Sultan Al Salami Trading and Importing, Al Ain International Medical Polyclinic, Nauras, Baqala Cheese & Pickles Centre and Al Sidr Natural Honey. During the announcement, Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said the Urban Treasures initiative continues to shine a light on businesses that have 'added to Abu Dhabi's character over the decades'. 'These establishments are enduring community pillars that reflect the spirit of our emirate and, by celebrating them, we honour these human stories and traditions. With each successive edition, we celebrate businesses that are recognised for having a lasting impact within our community and inspire future generations to cherish their legacy.' Often family-owned, past honourees have included everything from hole-in-the-wall eateries and local bakeries to textile shops and pharmacies. Awardees are selected through public nominations, which are reviewed by DCT Abu Dhabi to confirm that each business has been operating for a minimum of 20 years. Following this screening, a dedicated committee conducts on-site evaluations of the shortlisted businesses, including interviews with owners, managers and customers. With the completion of its fourth run, the Urban Treasures initiative has now recognised a total of 60 cherished local establishments throughout Abu Dhabi. Last year, the list included the UAE's first pharmacy that opened in 1965, a Persian carpet shop from 1989, and two restaurants that have been open since the 1990s.

Zayed National Museum Abu Dhabi On track for completion this year, Zayed National Museum aims to celebrate the rich history, culture, and stories that highlight the narratives of its people from ancient times to modern day. Exploring over 300,000 years of history, landscapes, languages, and culture, it also tells the story of the UAE's Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, whose enduring example still guides the nation and its people today. Through its exhibitions, research and public programmes, Zayed National Museum explores the legacy and cornerstone values grounded in solidarity, tolerance, among others, that Sheikh Zayed embodied and their lasting influence on the country he founded. teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi If you haven't heard of teamLab Phenomena yet, the multi-sensory experience by a Japanese art collective that creates other-worldly immersive digital experiences with next-generation storytelling has opened in the capital's cultural district. Officially launched on April 18, 2025, it comprises mesmerising interactive exhibits within the 17,000 square-meter space that play with light, sounds, shape, video, and movement. teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi resides at the intersection of art, theatre, technology, and theme park. Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi aims to put a spotlight on the evolution of the universe through engaging site-specific installations and immersive displays that serve as educational resources. Not only does it aim to ignite the minds, but the museum is also thinking ahead with initiatives set in place before the opening to encourage women to pursue careers in the fields of science, archaeology, and conservation. 'We hope that through our programmes that highlight different characters and people from this region that we don't normally hear about, young girls and women will be encouraged to enter these fields. There is so much potential here and so many routes to go down, it is just a case of finding the area you are interested in and following that,' says Noora Abdulla Albalooshi, Assistant Curator at the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Set to be completed in 2025, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be the region's enigmatic destination for contemporary art, showcasing artworks from across the globe housed under a floor area of 80,000 square meters designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry. This collaboration between DCT and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation will comprise 28 galleries with an international collection of artworks commissioned for the exceptional spaces within the museum.
