‘Mission Asmita': UP Police busts pan-India conversion, radicalisation network; 10 held
Representative Image (AI) LUCKNOW: Acting under the state government's stated 'zero tolerance' policy on organised crime, Uttar Pradesh Police on Saturday claimed to have dismantled a pan-India network allegedly involved in illegal religious conversion, radicalisation, and financial facilitation. Ten suspects were arrested from six states, following the disappearance of two adult sisters from Agra in March. According to officials, an FIR regarding the disappearance of two real sisters, aged 33 and 18, was lodged at Sadar Bazar police station, Agra, in March and later transferred to the district cyber police station for technical investigation. Sections 87, 111(3), and 111(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 3/5 of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021, were invoked. Investigators said evidence pointed to a wider organised operation spanning multiple states. DGP Rajeev Krishna said the action was part of 'Mission Asmita,' an internal initiative launched to tackle emerging challenges, including alleged forced or deceitful religious conversions, online radicalisation, and financial channels exploiting so-called 'love jihad' tactics (a politically charged term, the use of which remains under official investigation). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologists Confirm: 60-Year-Old Sheds Fat With 4 Ingredients The Healthy Way Learn More Undo Police teams were dispatched to West Bengal, Goa, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Rajasthan, and within Uttar Pradesh, and arrested the following 10 suspects (names and aliases as provided by police; their exact roles are under verification): Aisha (alias S.B. The network was funneling money through the dark web to support extremist activities and 'love jihad' operations, adopting tactics resembling the signature style of ISIS. Preliminary findings suggest the group had active ties to banned outfits like PFI and SDPI, with handlers connected to Pakistan-based operatives. Agra emerged as one of the key hubs of this network, where radicalisation modules were being developed and funds distributed.'

‘Revival' plan lands 3 fugitives in jail
Chennai: Attempts to re-establish contact with their prospective aides in Tamil Nadu proved to be the undoing of three fugitives who were linked to multiple terror-related cases across TN, Karnataka and Kerala, and were on the run for almost three decades. And the state police's continued intel gathering paid off when the Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) in two carefully coordinated operations in Kartnataka and Andhra Pradesh between June 30 and July 10, finally nabbed the trio. For nearly 30 years, they blended into small-town life under borrowed names. The suspects, originally identified as Tailor Raja, Abu Backer Siddique, and Mohammad Ali, were living under the aliases Shajahan (Vijayapura, Karnataka), Amanullah, and Mansoor (Rayachoti, Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh). ATS officers said they were involved in a series of high-profile crimes, including parcel bombings, coordinated blasts, and targeted killings in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Siddique and Ali were arrested in Kadapa on June 30, while Raja was arrested in Vijayapura on July 10. ATS sleuths tracked them for more than three months, maintaining undercover surveillance where they lived. Siddique, once employed in the UAE, possessed 18 mobile phones, including old models dating back two decades. Siddique and Ali, allegedly involved in the 1995 parcel bomb murder of Thangam Muthukrishnan in Nagapattinam and a foiled parcel bomb attempt in Nagore, were also linked to the 1995 Hindu Munnani office blast in Chennai's Chintadripet, the 1999 serial blasts in Chennai, Trichy, and Coimbatore, the 2011 pipe bomb targeting former Deputy PM L K Advani, and a 2012 murder in Vellore. Mohammad Ali, identified as one of those behind the 1999 bombing of old Chennai police commissioner's office, was also implicated in the 2013 blast near the BJP office in Malleswaram, Bengaluru. All three were linked to extremists such as S Fakruddin, Panna Ismail and Bilal Malik. Tailor Raja, associated with Al-Umma and named in the 1998 Coimbatore serial blasts, moved to Vijayapura, worked as a tailor and later established a vegetable wholesale business. At a press conference on Friday, DGP Shankar Jiwal praised the ATS team and said, "I cannot disclose the operational details or the names of officers involved at this stage." They are expected to be formally charged under multiple provisions of IPC and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

PM Anwar to champion multilateralism at BRICS Summit in Brazil
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to highlight the critical role of multilateralism and Malaysia's dedication to fostering a balanced, inclusive world order at the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The summit, scheduled for July 6-7, will see Anwar addressing key global challenges, including economic cooperation, artificial intelligence governance, and climate action. Acting Head of Mission at the Malaysian embassy in Brasilia, Datuk Mohammad Ali Selamat, confirmed that Anwar will deliver two key statements during the summit. The first, titled 'Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs and Artificial Intelligence,' will be presented during the session for BRICS partner countries on Sunday. The second, focusing on 'Environment, COP30 and Global Health,' will be delivered on Monday. Mohammad Ali noted that these interventions align with Malaysia's commitment to amplifying the voices of developing nations within global platforms. 'The Prime Minister will stress the need for constructive dialogue and inclusive collaboration, as BRICS serves as a crucial platform for addressing shared challenges like sustainable development and global stability,' he said. Anwar's participation follows his official visit to France and marks his second trip to Brazil, having previously attended the G20 Summit as a guest last year. Both visits were at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. As ASEAN Chair for 2025, Malaysia aims to strengthen ties between ASEAN and BRICS to enhance regional economic cooperation. The summit's theme, 'Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,' resonates with Malaysia's priorities, including digital transformation, AI governance, and equitable trade. Malaysia officially became a BRICS Partner Country on January 1 this year, joining other nations such as Belarus, Bolivia, and Thailand. The BRICS bloc, initially comprising Brazil, Russia, India, and China, has expanded to include South Africa, Egypt, Iran, and the UAE, among others. During his visit, Anwar is also scheduled to meet with Brazil's aerospace giant Embraer, underscoring potential economic collaborations. His delegation includes Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Brazil has grown significantly, reaching RM20.35 billion in 2024, a 14.6% increase from the previous year. Key Malaysian exports include electrical and electronic products, rubber goods, and palm oil-based items, while imports from Brazil feature metalliferous ores, halal meat, and crude petroleum. 'Brazil remains a vital trading partner in Latin America, particularly for E&E and rubber products. Our collaboration in food security and green energy will also be a focus,' Mohammad Ali added. Rio de Janeiro, the host city, is famed for its scenic landmarks, vibrant culture, and the world-renowned Carnaval, making it a fitting backdrop for discussions on global cooperation. -BERNAMA

New Energy Discovery Could Help Pakistan Cut Costly Fuel Imports
Pakistan Oilfields Limited (POL) and Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) have announced the successful completion of hydrocarbon production testing at the Makori Deep-03 Development Well in the TAL Block in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Drilling operations reached a final depth of 3,887 meters and yielded 2,112 barrels per day of condensate and 22.08 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMSCFD), according to a filing by POL. POL holds a 25% working interest in the block, while OGDCL has a 27.763% stake. Production is expected to commence within the next two months, pending completion of surface infrastructure. Earlier this year, Pakistan and Turkey signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly explore offshore opportunities in Pakistan's territorial waters. While specifics remain under wraps, the Petroleum Division framed the agreement as a platform for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) and facilitating the transfer of upstream technologies. 'We believe that this strategic collaboration will bring much-needed FDI to Pakistan and pave the way for the sharing and deployment of international technologies, expertise and skillsets,' said the Ministry in a statement issued in April. The country's broader offshore potential has long been touted but remains largely untapped. Local media reports have described the recent discovery as one of the largest in the region, though these claims are not substantiated by international geological surveys. Former Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) member Muhammad Arif told Dawn TV that if the find turns out to be a gas reservoir, it could eventually displace costly LNG monetizing these resources will not come cheaply. Exploration alone could require upwards of $5 billion in investment. According to The Economic Times, Pakistan currently imports 85% of its crude oil, 29% of its natural gas, 50% of its LPG, and 20% of its coal. The country's energy import bill stood at $17.5 billion in 2023 and is projected to nearly double by 2030. Energy Minister Mohammad Ali recently estimated that an investment of $25 billion to $30 billion would be sufficient to extract just 10% of the country's estimated 235 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas over the next decade. Speaking to reporters in late 2024, Ali suggested that such a development could reverse Pakistan's declining domestic gas production and significantly reduce foreign exchange outflows. But foreign interest remains tepid. A 2023 auction for 18 onshore and offshore oil and gas blocks failed to attract significant international participation. Around the same time, Shell Plc announced it would exit the country, agreeing to sell its Pakistan business to Saudi Aramco as part of a broader restructuring of its global downstream portfolio. Security risks have also complicated Pakistan's energy investment outlook. In March 2024, five Chinese engineers were killed in a suicide attack while working on the Dasu hydropower project in northern Pakistan. Insurgents from the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) also stormed the Gwadar Port Authority complex, targeting Chinese interests in the southwest. The attacks led to the temporary suspension of several projects under the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Beijing's flagship $62 billion infrastructure initiative in the country. Launched in 2015 as part of China's Belt and Road Initiative, CPEC has poured an estimated $25.4 billion into Pakistan. Its power projects have added around 6,000 megawatts to the national grid and expanded the transmission network by roughly 1,000 kilometers, according to the Pakistan Planning Commission. CPEC has also financed the construction of approximately 500 kilometers of highways, a notable achievement for a country grappling with chronic infrastructure shortfalls. Yet the returns have fallen short of expectations. Pakistan's external debt has ballooned to $100 billion, with roughly one-third owed to China. The country is navigating a severe balance of payments crisis, dwindling foreign exchange reserves, and surging inflation that now approaches 30%. Food prices have risen by more than 40%, and nearly 45% of Pakistan's 250 million citizens live below the poverty line, according to World Bank estimates. In this context, the discovery at Makori Deep-03 is a promising development. However, converting potential into production will demand capital, security guarantees, and political stability, all of which remain in short supply.
