After a decade, Mahalakshmi fair returns to Gokak with fanfare
Belagavi: After a gap of 10 years, the vibrant and much-awaited Mahalakshmi fair, also known as Mahalakshmi Devi Rathotsava, is set to make a grand return to Gokak from June 30. Anticipating a turnout of lakhs of devotees over the 10-day event, Belagavi district administration has put in place extensive arrangements to ensure smooth conduct, security, and public safety. In light of the anticipated crowd and potential traffic congestion, deputy commissioner Mohammad Roshan has declared a holiday for all anganwadis, schools, and colleges in Gokak town from June 30 to July 8. These premises will also serve as temporary accommodations for police and personnel from other departments deployed for the fair. To coordinate various aspects of the fair, the district administration has formed multiple committees tasked with responsibilities ranging from crowd management and transportation to sanitation and event organisation. Special attention is being given to the chariot festival scheduled on July 2 and 3, which draws the largest gathering. DC Roshan has directed officials to implement crowd control measures to avoid any untoward incidents such as stampedes. In addition to the chariot procession, other major attractions like the bullock cart race, horse cart race, and cycle race are expected to draw crowds. DC Roshan has emphasised the need for timely dissemination of public information regarding drinking water, mobile toilets, transportation services, and emergency contacts. Display boards and media broadcasts will be used to keep the public informed. To manage VIP darshan requests, an officer will be appointed to handle entries strictly as per protocol, with permissions only granted on the recommendation of the temple secretary. Given the tradition of devotees bathing in the Ghataprabha River during the fair, safety precautions are being intensified. "I instructed the Gokak City Municipal Council commissioner to install safety ropes and barricades along the riverside and to provide sufficient life jackets for emergencies," said DC Roshan. Superintendent of police Bhimashankar Guled confirmed that SDRF and fire department personnel will be deployed near the river for rescue readiness. Furthermore, the administration has imposed a ban on liquor sales and the use of chemically mixed bhandara (holy turmeric powder) during the fair to maintain sanctity and public order.

Belagavi DC forms a committee to monitor Kannada Bhavan
Pic: The Kannada Bhavan of Nehru Nagar in Belagavi Belagavi: Belagavi deputy commissioner Mohammad Roshan, formed a committee involving various departments to monitor the Kannada Bhavan building. Kannada activist Ashok Chandaragi wrote a letter to the DC in this regard, objecting to the use of the building by a private organisation, despite it being built with govt funds and used for commercial purposes. Kannada Bhavan of Nehru Nagar was constructed with a grant of Rs 3.2 crore from the Karnataka Border Area Development Authority and Rs 2.9 crore from the Kannada and culture department. In a meeting of the Karnataka Border Area Development Authority held in Bengaluru on May 6, member Ashok Chandaragi raised the issue of managing the Kannada Bhavan. He demanded that the authority form a committee of officers under the DC's leadership to manage the Kannada Bhavan built with govt funds. The amount collected from the commercial shops on the premises of the Kannada Bhavan is being used by a private organisation. "It is not the right step to open a commercial shop in a building built for the survival of the Kannada language and culture and the use of the public," he objected. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kardioloog: Buikvet na je 50e? It was decided in the meeting that since 2010-11, all Kannada Bhavans constructed with the authority's grant are being managed by committees of officers under the leadership of the respective DC. The Bhavan in Belagavi also should be managed in the same manner. In a meeting held on May 29 to discuss the problems of border areas, district minister Satish Jarkiholi recommended the formation of a committee under the leadership of the DC for the management of Kannada Bhavan. The committee, chaired by the deputy commissioner, includes the additional deputy commissioner and the secretary of the Karnataka Border Area Development Authority as permanent members, and the deputy commissioner (revenue) of the BCC as member-secretary. The committee members will examine the objections related to the Kannada Bhavan and the commercial shops on its premises. The member-secretary will collect the details of the rent and documents collected from the commercial shops and present them before the management committee. Pro-Kannada leader Ashok Chandaragi said that the income from commercial pots should be used for the maintenance of Kannada Bhavan. The fee for Kannada Bhavan programmes should be fixed at a minimum so that more Kannada cultural events are held here. Deputy commissioner Mohammad Roshan said that a committee has already been formed to manage Kannada Bhavan and a meeting will be held soon to take further action.

Long-pending central govt's infra projects in Belagavi back on track
Belagavi: Several long-pending central govt's infrastructure projects in and around Belagavi are finally gaining momentum after years of delay, primarily due to land acquisition hurdles. The breakthrough comes with the combined efforts of DC Mohammad Roshan and Belagavi MP Jagadish Shettar , who took these stalled projects as a top priority. Key among them is the much-awaited Belagavi-Dharwad railway line via Kittur, a 73-km project sanctioned in 2019 during the tenure of former MP and MoS for railways, the late Suresh Angadi. Despite funding from the Centre, the project was held up for years due to land-related issues. However, DC Roshan recently announced that land acquisition is now complete, and the work is expected to commence shortly. The Halaga-Macche bypass highway, a vital route connecting Pune-Bengaluru NH-4 and Belagavi-Goa national highway, sanctioned in 2009, also faced prolonged delay due to legal land disputes. With the district administration actively mediating and convincing landowners, the impasse has been resolved, and construction is underway. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Another major infrastructure project, the Belagavi Ring Road was sanctioned in 2018. The Rs 3,800 crore project to be executed in three phases, received Rs 1,622 crore for the first phase of 34 km. DC Roshan recently confirmed that 80% of the land acquisition is now complete. This ambitious project, sanctioned under the Bharatmala project, will help resolve the traffic congestion in Belagavi city. "Most of these projects were delayed despite being sanctioned, because of land-related issues. After I became MP, I prioritised these issues, met Union ministers, held review meetings with officials, and visited the sites. Today, we are seeing the results. I expect the required land to be fully acquired in the next 2-3 months and the tender process to begin within 5-6 months," said MP Jagadish Shettar. He credited DC Mohammad Roshan for playing a vital role in resolving bureaucratic and on-ground challenges related to land acquisition. In addition, Shettar informed that land acquisition for Belagavi-Hunagund-Raichur highway, a Rs 1,452 crore project, has also reached near completion. He further assured that the new terminal at Belagavi airport will be ready by March 2026, marking a step toward upgrading the facility to international standards.
