Iraqi PM orders probe after Baghdad clash
Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani ordered, on Tuesday, a high-level investigation into corruption allegations against a senior agriculture official in Baghdad's al-Karkh district, accused of triggering a recent armed standoff with Iran-aligned militants. According to the Prime Minister's Media Office, a special committee—led by the Deputy President of the Federal Board of Supreme Audit and including members from the Federal Commission of Integrity and al-Sudani's staff—has been tasked with overseeing the inquiry. The panel will examine complaints from farmers and agricultural workers in al-Dora and nearby areas, focusing on claims of land seizures and misconduct, with findings to be delivered directly to al-Sudani for legal action. This decision follows a deadly clash at the Ministry of Agriculture's al-Dora office over the weekend, after which authorities detained the former director for allegedly orchestrating the violence and committing administrative violations.

Iraq's PM confirms thwarted attacks on Israel, US during Iran-Israel conflict
Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani revealed that armed groups inside Iraq attempted to launch rockets and drones toward Israel and Iraqi bases hosting US forces during the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel earlier this year. In an interview with the Associated Press, al-Sudani stated that these operations were foiled 29 times through what he described as 'security operations' carried out by the Iraqi government. He also condemned recent drone attacks targeting oil fields in the Kurdistan Region, calling them 'acts of terrorism,' emphasizing that the federal government is working in coordination with Kurdish authorities and the US-led coalition to identify and hold those responsible.

Iraq's prime minister seeks closer US ties while keeping armed groups at bay
BAGHDAD (AP) — The prime minister of Iraq has kept his country on the sidelines as military conflicts raged nearby for almost two years. This required balancing Iraq's relations with two countries vital to his power and enemies with each other: the U.S. and Iran. The feat became especially difficult last month when war broke out between Israel, a U.S. ally, and Iran — and the U.S. struck Iranian nuclear sites. Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said he used a mix of political and military pressure to stop armed groups aligned with Iran from entering the fray.

Iraq sentences foreign trafficker to death, destroys seized drugs
Shafaq News – Baghdad/Basra/Erbil/Maysan Iraq intensified its anti-narcotics efforts on Monday with a series of actions across the country, including a death sentence for a foreign trafficker, large-scale drug destruction in Erbil, and multiple arrests. In Basra, the Criminal Court sentenced a foreign national to death after police found five kilograms of methamphetamine and tramadol intended for sale. The Supreme Judicial Council said the ruling was issued under Iraq's 2017 Anti-Narcotics Law. In Baghdad, two Iraqis received life sentences after being caught with over three kilograms of hashish. The verdict was based on the same law, alongside penal code provisions for criminal involvement. In the Kurdistan Region, Erbil authorities destroyed more than 14 kilograms of confiscated narcotics—marijuana, hashish, heroin, opium, syringes, and over 300 tablets—following final court rulings. In Maysan province, security forces arrested another foreign national attempting to smuggle 10 kilograms of drugs into the country. The arrest followed an intelligence-led operation, according to a statement by local authorities. Drug trafficking and abuse have become growing concerns in Iraq. Speaking at the Democracy Summit in Seoul, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani called for the creation of an international alliance to combat the spread of narcotics, warning that 'drugs have claimed countless young lives worldwide.'

Bomb-laden drone crashes in northern Iraq
Baghdad ( – The Counter-Terrorism Directorate (CTD) in the Kurdistan region of Iraq said on Monday that a bomb-laden drone fell early in the morning in Erbil province with no injuries reported. The incident reportedly occurred at 5:50 a.m. local time, according to the statement. The directorate affirmed that the drone had explosives but did not cause any damage or deaths. The assault followed a string of similar drone attacks in recent weeks that targeted oil facilities and other important sites in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. Iraq's National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji, accompanied by senior security officials, arrived in the capital of the Kurdistan region of Iraq, Erbil, on Monday to look into a series of drone and missile attacks that recently targeted several sites in northern Iraq. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani formed a commission to investigate the attacks, but the results have not been made available to the public. Last week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the necessity of holding responsible those involved in the recent attacks on Iraq's energy infrastructure. Rubio also emphasized the need to take measures to prevent future attacks, according to a statement released by the US Department of State. Spokesperson of the US State Department Tammy Bruce said in a press briefing on Thursday that the US firmly opposes the drone assaults, which have been targeting oil sites in the Kurdistan region of Iraq since July 14. These attacks threaten Iraq's stability and economic future, according to Bruce. Multiple incidents of mysterious drone attacks on energy infrastructure in recent weeks have sparked domestic and international alarm about the emergence of security tensions, which might harm the Iraqi economy and reconstruction efforts.
