Supreme Court seeks enquiry report from A.P. Government on illegal mining scam involving ex-MLA Vallabhaneni Vamsi
The Supreme Court on Wednesday (July 2, 2025) directed the State of Andhra Pradesh to submit, in a sealed cover, its inquiry report into an alleged illegal mining scam involving former Gannavaram MLA and YSR Congress Party leader Vallabhaneni Vamsi Mohan. The direction was issued by a Bench led by Justice M.M. Sundresh while hearing a petition filed by the State challenging a May 29 order of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, which had granted anticipatory bail to Mr. Mohan in connection with the case. Also read: A.P. Government constitutes SIT to investigate cases against former MLA Vallabhaneni Vamsi The Bench agreed to hear the State's petition in detail on July 17. Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing for the State, submitted that the government had not been granted a proper opportunity to present its case. He said Mr. Mohan was the 'kingpin' of a 'largescale mining scam' and that his custodial interrogation was necessary, citing allegations that he had threatened witnesses. When Justice Sundresh observed that the complaint appeared 'barebones' and lacked material particulars, Mr. Luthra responded that the inquiry report prepared by the State's Vigilance and Enforcement Department was exhaustive. The Bench then directed the State to place the report on record in a sealed cover. Also read: A.P. Police search for former MLA Vamsi's mobile phone According to the State's petition, the largescale illegal mining scam was uncovered through a comprehensive enquiry by the Vigilance and Enforcement Department. The illegal activities allegedly took place between 2019 and 2024 across Gannavaram, Bapulapadu, and Vijayawada Rural mandals. The State submitted that Mr. Mohan, during his tenure as MLA, had misused his office and conspired with associates to orchestrate a sophisticated racket involving the fraudulent procurement and misuse of temporary mining permits. The petition claimed that mining permits were obtained using forged documents, including PAN and Aadhaar details of unsuspecting civilians who had been misled into submitting their identity proofs under the pretext of enrollment in government welfare schemes. Further, legal procedures were allegedly bypassed to extract gravel and building stone, with complaints by local police and revenue authorities being suppressed due to Mr. Mohan's political influence. 'The total wrongful loss to the public exchequer due to these fraudulent mining activities has been calculated to be ₹195.04 crore,' the State's petition noted.

P.V.N. Madhav takes charge as BJP A.P. unit president, promises to strengthen NDA
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has declared former MLC P.V.N. Madhav as the new president of its Andhra Pradesh unit, with Karnataka MP and BJP National Council member P.C. Mohan announcing his unanimous election. Mr. Madhav received the certificate of appointment from State Election Officer Paka Satyanarayana at a function in Vijayawada on Tuesday (July 1, 2025). Mr. Mohan emphasised the democratic process within the BJP, noting that leadership at all levels—from State to national—is chosen based on consensus and cadre input. 'Unlike the Congress, where leadership is a one-man show with selections based on favouritism, the BJP values the voice of its workers and leaders,' he said. Outgoing State president and MP Daggubati Purandeswari handed over the responsibilities to Mr. Madhav. BJP national and State leaders congratulated Mr. Madhav. In his address, Mr. Madhav thanked the party leadership for the trust placed in him and reaffirmed his commitment to building the BJP into a dominant political force in the State. He noted that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and with the support of grassroots workers, the party would work to ensure development and represent the aspirations of Andhra Pradesh people. Addressing the media, Mr. Madhav vowed to resolve internal differences among the alliance partners and secure a stronger role for the BJP within the coalition government led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. 'I will take any alliance concerns to the notice of the Chief Minister and ensure BJP's rightful representation,' he said, emphasising that the BJP would play a key role in the State's development, particularly in ensuring the release of Central funds and accelerating projects such as Polavaram Left Canal. Mr. Madhav recalled his family's deep association with the BJP and RSS. 'Our family and the party are inseparable. I was born during the Emergency and spent time in a police station as an infant with my mother,' he said. He pledged to build the BJP into an 'unshakable force' in Andhra Pradesh. Expressing gratitude to former president, under whose leadership the party gained eight MLAs and three MPs in the last elections, Mr. Madhav thanked senior leaders such as Somu Veerraju and promised to carry forward their legacy with dedication. 'This position is not a privilege but a responsibility,' he said, adding that the party would work to double its legislative strength. Union Minister Bhupatiraju Srinivasa Varma, Rajya Sabha member Paka Satyanarayana, BJP leaders N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, MLA Sujana Chowdary, Somu Veerraju and others spoke.

PVN Madhav takes over as Andhra BJP president
Vijayawada: The BJP is the most democratic party in the country as it elects its presidents from the booth to the national level workers through internal democratic process. In contrast, parties like Congress imposes leadership from New Delhi without grassroots consultation, BJP state election observer and Karnataka MP PC Mohan on Tuesday. Speaking at a function on Tuesday, Mohan announced the unanimous election of former MLC and senior leader PVN Madhav as the new president of the Andhra Pradesh BJP unit. He formally handed over the declaration to Madhav, while outgoing president and MP Daggubati Purandeswari passed on the responsibilities. Mohan emphasised that the BJP is driven by ideology, not individuals. "Whether it's the state or national president, we elect them democratically. We value the opinions of our leaders and council members. But in Congress, it's a one-man show—only those who please the high command rise to leadership," he said. In his acceptance speech, Madhav expressed gratitude to senior leaders and the national leadership for the opportunity. "Our family and the BJP are inseparable," he said. People still don't admit they snore. It can have adverse health effects
104 million Indians in the working age category of 15- 64 have OSA. And 47 million have moderate or severe OSA, said Dr Mohan, at an event in Delhi's India International Centre. 'Snoring per se may be harmless, but when you can't breathe while you are snoring, that can be a sign of a more serious disease,' said Dr Anant Mohan, a decorated pulmonologist from AIIMS, Delhi. New Delhi: Over 58 per cent of Indians consider snoring an indicator of good sleep. This myth was busted at a recent gathering of doctors. They helped people understand the health risks associated with undiagnosed Obstructive Sleep Apnea. OSA is a sleep disturbance with repeated episodes of upper airway obstruction. 'There is a blockage of oxygen, you gasp for a bit, then go back to sleep. This happens again—you do the same and go back to sleep. The cycle continues throughout the night,' said Dr Mohan, referring to the Quiet Sleep Epidemic that most Indians don't address. Five eminent medical consultants from AIIMS, Delhi, were part of a panel discussion titled Beyond the noise: Snoring—A wake up call for your health. The panel discussion moderated by Dr Alok Thakar, Professor and head of department of ENT & Head and Neck surgery, included Dr Mohan, Dr Rakesh Kumar, Professor of ENT & Head and Neck Surgery, Dr Achal Kumar Srivastava, Professor of Neurology and Dr Nitish Naik, Professor of Cardiology. The panel discussion was curated and chaired by Dr Ashwini Kumar. Fragmented sleep not only translates to just waking up groggy, zoning out during the day. Over time, it can lead to serious complications. 'It can lead to memory impairment, trouble concentrating, depression, anxiety, hypertension, heart diseases, to ultimately dangerous things like stroke and sudden death. It's a dangerous disorder,' said Dr Thakar. Also read: Bengaluru is leading India's mental health revolution. VCs say it's the next big field From diagnosis to acceptance Snoring alone doesn't mean one is suffering from OSA. The panel explained how one should go about, if there are signs of trouble. An ENT or a general physician should reasonably be able to detect the disorder. 'It is a cumbersome test, but unfortunately, Polysomnography (sleep study) is the gold standard for diagnosing OSA,' said Dr Srivastava. It is an overnight monitoring of your sleep. Sensors are attached to one's body tracking brain activity, eye movements, muscle tone, breathing, snoring, body movements and heart rhythm. The doctors warned against screening tools, like questionnaires, found on the internet. 'People are now looking at apps, putting monitoring devices under the mattress to pick up the sensation and record all body movements. But none of them can diagnose OSA to the level we want,' said Dr Mohan. Dr Kumar highlighted the stigma around snoring. 'Acceptance is not easy. Getting a person to admit that he's a heavy snorer is not easy, there's a stigma there,' said Dr Kumar. CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy is effective for OSA, but there is aversion on the patient's part to continue with the treatment. CPAP therapy delivers continuous air pressure through a tight-fitting mask to keep the upper airway open during sleep, preventing episodes of breathing obstruction. 'As soon as they are advised of the CPAP therapy, people don't want to use it,' said Dr Kumar. The mask is a significant commitment for patients. 'It is virtually a lifelong therapy,' added Dr Kumar. Also read: Your sleep problems may not be a lifestyle issue but a medical one Surgical intervention The panel of doctors informed the audience that there is no oral medication to treat OSA. Dr Mohan said the only effective treatment is a combination of CPAP therapy and weight loss. 'Most patients discontinue CPAP therapy within a month or by the end of one year, and then what they want is an easy option out; they feel surgery is an answer. Unless we know where the problem is, the surgery will not be 100 per cent effective,' said Dr Naik. OSA is a multi-faceted problem. 'There are many sites where breathing is obstructed. If only one side is obstructed, surgery will be effective. If there are obstructions at multiple sites, we have to decide on the least invasive surgical intervention. I usually don't advise multi-level surgery,' said Dr Naik. Dr Mohan stressed the need for weight management to counter the condition and aid treatment. 'There are masks, nasal pillows, and then there is a helmet. However, if you are dramatically overweight, many of these treatments would not be effective,' said Dr Mohan. (Edited by Theres Sudeep)
